Get a hockney koi skimmer for about £30 and put a large tank connector on it flow will be fine I use one and run a eazypod 2 upflow filters and a floating bed off of it so don't need to spend much
Hi James ,I love this videos as well as your son Jacobs video .I know the comments are off but please tell him it was the absolute hammer ,Thank your mother for the rabbits ❤️
Just subscribed to ya sons channel, and by does he look like his mum even the smile is bang on, so glad to hear and see the original you & not the one you became totally totally awesome of you to take it on the chin the hardest part is realising there's a problem and dealing with, my heart goes out to you and not forgetting your family your wife is your rock for sure. Stay safe and mostly stay strong!!!
Hi James. when I built my pond I added two 2" bottom drains into the wall, I use these to feed my shower & the bottom drain feeds my moving & static bed.
The pond build is looking great James. The question is, do you need a skimmer in a grow on pond mate? I know with my grow on and the amount of feeds I give them, a skimmer would be a food trap!! I'm feeding Saki Hikari it would be a very expensive skimmer in the world!!
Alreet Man, mate for me nothing energies me more & gives me a good kick up the arse to get back into the koi season. Than watching yourself & others like you going at new projects for the season ahead. Thanks for all your efforts towards the hobby. Don't worry about the budget side of it to much mate. It's very sensible to have one as a starting point. But as we all know in this hobby we always want more. And like you say ultimately you have to be happy with the finished result or else. You have wasted money anyways. Keep up the good work fella great to have you back & good luck to the young lad...Behave & Be Well Whisperer's 👍
Love what you're doing at the minute mate, great content! Regarding skimmer, i wouldnt put one in if i were you. Food will be down that in seconds on a pond that size.. My grow on doesnt have one and ive no regrets at all!
@SamCarl94 I totally agree with you there as I regret putting mine in on my tosai as the ikkle bugger's just hide behind it as for food loss it can be I pain in the butt v💯🧁👍👍👍
Definitely will do i don’t get all of that money though TH-cam take there share 38% and some was in dollars so when converting to uk currency but it still will definitely help
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 ahh okay I see it’s a shame they can’t give you more because you’ve worked hard to get where you are on the Channel a lot of dedication!
Great video James, and brilliant first video Jacob…. 👏🏼 👏🏼 👍🏼 Personally, I wouldn’t put a skimmer on a pond that size, if you had to, it would take seconds to use a small net and clear anything once a day, but obviously your call James… 🤔 👍🏼 Mug arrived, its great thanks 👍🏼👍🏼 ☕️
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 Yeah I need to get my act together and 🎥 😂 Yeah, I absolutely get that mate. It’s defo a good way to feed another filter, like the shower you are planning. 👍🏼👍🏼 Look forward to seeing your chosen route….. 👌🏼
James fella, I wouldn’t use cheap bins! They will split a year or two down the line, nothing is made to last now days! Have a look at the blue water drums/barrels much stronger
Use the skimmer you have, skimmers dont make a huge difference, just another line to pull from. Might want to put a purge on that bottom drain as your probably not going to be pulling a huge amounts of water through your diy filters.
If it costs a grand James all in it will be well worth it saving on labour costs doing it all yourself it will still be a budget build these days with price of everything looking forward to seeing it all done up the hammer then boy
I have an in wall skimmer James and if its off for more than 12hrs at a time, no matter the time of year, the top of the water is so much dirtier, it makes a big difference. It used to feed the waterfall directly which meant, even though the basket catches the bigger bits, there was still a lot of dirt being thrown down the waterfall. I have just re routed the skimmer to go directly into the drum and the waterfall will now be fed from one of the drum's outs. The skimmer pump is plugged into a plug timer and is on for 15mins every 3 hours. Not intending to teach you how to suck eggs mate, just thought this might be useful in helping you make up your mind 👍
Hi James. Hope you’re well? Just thinking, if you’re fibreglassing the pond , could you not make/ glass you’re own skimmer. Made to measure exactly how you need it ? Would be significantly cheaper than buying new and would give you what you want
I’ve had a grow on with and without a skimmer. I would save money and koi food and leave the skimmer off. You want your food in your koi not your skimmer. Just my thought. Keep the content coming. 🐇🐇🐇
Mate, on a small pond like that a skimmer would not be worth the effort, nice to have, but not as effective as you may think, filtration is better to focus on
I want to see you make that skimmer with that plastic welder ?? Absolutely ridiculous what they want for a stupid piece of plastic with a pipe fitting on it! And don’t forget that it could easily be made out of fiber glassed wood and last a lifetime ..looks great James
You pm me james I’ll give you £100 towards your pond build, yes it’s very genuine 👌🏻your like myself you like to do things properly 🤷and I’d rather you had your grow out how you want it.
My sons new channel give him a look 👀

Great video and well done Jacob I've subscribed to his channel. Tymftr.
Pardon my ignorance but will a pool skimmer work instead of a pond skimmer? They are much cheaper, I just don’t understand the difference.
Put in the two small 2" skimmers into a 4" outlet

You might want to consider a box weld rubber liner, used for years don't have any problems. Cwd does good liners, 1mm butyl at best price.
Second this!
Maybe don't have skimmers at all... Are they really required? Would save money and the hassle of putting it in..
I would like to put one in to give me the options if I need it
