    We were never spanked. We would be grounded. Not being able to go outside with our friends or to any fun things happening during that time was punishment. And it worked. I used same with my children.

    40+ years ago we had to move to NJ. My dad was upset that I'd be around "cold, unfriendly New Yorkers". It was very much the opposite. Like you say, they are very family oriented. People are not friendly in the DC metro area and can be terribly rude and greedy. The upside is families often are not rooted here so it is easier to invite or be invited for holidays. In NJ, they were very friendly until holidays.....that was for family only and non family was never invited. Also once you move, they do not make effort to stay in touch.....again, it's all about family. Friends are harder to make here but they have remained friends even when they move.

    • @glendasully
      @glendasully  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yes, I noticed that when I lived in NJ. I worked for an Italian family & they did invite me to parties & dinners with the family. I also had a very good friend who was from Ireland. She invited me over every Thanksgiving. All of their family still lives in Ireland

    So glad to hear that your car was fixable, and that your paycheck from her helped you pay for it! Always a relief to find a mechanic you trust. I know a lot of kids in our era (I was born in '50) were physically punished. Happily my folks weren't into that. Not sure about my dad, but I'm pretty sure my mom's parents never hit them either. To be honest I was a pretty good kid, so don't think I was ever grounded even. My mom and I would talk over if there was an issue. Mostly I hated doing housework and would balk about that. I wasn't one of the popular kids in high school so didn't really date until college, so no issues there. My sister was a bit more of a rebel. And since I was 7 years younger, and saw that it just caused stress in the house, I think I tried to not make waves. My dad traveled for his, job too. So for the last 7 years or so of my childhood it was just my mom and me at home during the week. So she was actually what I would call more a friend than a disciplinarian. And you try to be nice to your friends. I think it probably helped too, that my folks were college educated with degrees in education. So they were more up to date on childrearing than some. Plus my dad's specialty was psychology,so he knew physical punishment really accomplished nothing. As a result I pretty much raised our kids the same as they raised me, and neither of them were that badly behaved, so hitting either of them never occurred to me. Anyway, I'm sorry some of you were treated so harshly by the people who should have been your shelter from the world! Always saddens me when I hear the really cruel things some parents do!

    I went to a Boston Market once and didn’t like what I saw on the menu and left. I see at the grocery store different frozen entrees labeled Boston Market.
    One Saturday morning when I was 13 years old my Mom had gone grocery shopping and it was all of us 8 kids at home with my Dad who was hung over from being gone on one of binge drinking trips. My brother who was 2 years older than me loved to pick on me all the time. Well, this morning I wasn’t much in the mood for him picking on me and I took a spoonful of hot oatmeal and flicked it at him. He jumped backwards in his chair and all the other kids let out gasps and laughs! My dad was so pissed that we woke him up that he sent me outside to get a switch that he could whip me with. My oldest sister stuck up for me and told dad my brother had it coming for picking on me but dad wasn’t having it. I bought in a switch and he whipped me pretty bad. I had welts and bruises for a week all because my brother couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Seems like you should stay with this mechanic, he seems to do right by you! I got your moisture meters in the mail today and will send them out when my daughter can get to the post office! I'll let you know when they go out! I used to love Boston Markets, great meals! I miss them! My mother would have little bits of Ivory Soap in a baby food jar and when she looked at my nails, and I had bitten them, I had to chew 2 pieces of soap(and swallow)!! Don't know what that was supposed to do! I bit my nails all my life, and ironically when mom went into a nursing home...I stopped and have not bitten them since!( she entered the nursing home in 2004 when I was 54yrs old!) Just one of many strange things she did! (Issa...Koi fish?) God Bless!❤😊🚗🚗

    I believe my 1950s childhood friends and I received the kinds of punishments that our own parents had received growing up. There were no tv talk shows or social media teaching frustrated parents a better way. Spankings were common at my house but what I dreaded most happened when my siblings and I were fighting in the backseat of the car. Mom would reach her hand around and grab my thigh with her sharp fingernails. Ouch! This produced immediate obedience.
