Apparently, they also got a lot of attention among netizens predebut for being an "all visual" group. Honestly though, personally, I think their company just did a really good job of promoting them.
Besides solo promotions mentioned in the comments above, they also had weekly show broadcasted on TV called Flower Snack Shop, also released a single song + MV (included in debut album), and held some events before the actual debut!
