    I really enjoy listening to Tim. If anyone enjoyed this short video I'd recommend his books on the power of geography, also his book on the break up of Yugoslavia is a fantastic read.

    Population growth and migration will be the driver for the next big conflict. Land grabs via ideology or defence will also play a big part.

    I think this way of thinking is well out of date. Talking of using massed boots on the ground? It will be a battle of the drones played from a bunker.

      how can a drone hold ground?

    • @aaronb2779
      @aaronb2779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In 50-100 years time, sure that'll be the case. But right now I think theres still a requirement for 'boots on the ground' in any major conflict. Current drone technology is replacing that, but its still decades off superseding it.
      And that ignores the way in which cyber warfare and technology is replacing traditional kinetic combat.

      It won’t even be wars, they far too costly. China will hack the United States power grid and crash it, the US will hack Chinese satellites and down them and the cycle repeats etc etc

  • @carlhicksjr8401
    @carlhicksjr8401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why?
    Simple. Humans are a competitive and combative species. And it's been that way since Lucy left the trees a million years ago. However much of anything I have is less of that substance than you get. Nothing is infinite, nothing is free. Even the sun will burn out one day. Because of this we are instinctively driven acquire more resources.
    We view existence as having two teams: 'Us' [your people] and 'Them' [those people over there] and whenever it comes up for a vote, us or them, we choose 'Us' about 99.5% of the time.

      Blunt, but fairly close.
      You do realise that you’ve ruined the premise of thousands of books on the subject. Notably a fair few written by retired military folk who rely on their experiences to cash in on this drive for “why, why, why”

    This is an awful fact, but generally areas prone to conflict are very religious and also religiously diverse. Think the middle east, west asia, and africa; Very diverse, and very religious areas where conflict has been present for thousands of years.
    And of course there is also political issues like east Asia and eastern Europe.

    • @Naval-Gazing
      @Naval-Gazing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And religiosity is positively correlated with authoritarianism, and negatively correlated with educational attainment.

    • @imShlievenhien

      @@Naval-Gazing Not in 19th Century Britain, Vicars were seen as very prestigious individuals which we gave massive amounts of resources to. Some of them would squander it but more often than not they came up with brilliant inventions. We owe almost the entire industrial revolution to Vicars.

    • @Naval-Gazing
      @Naval-Gazing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@imShlievenhien True, but that was attributable to the Church's providing a sinecure for middle-class and fringe-aristocratic intellectuals --- just as the medieval Catholic Church had formerly provided power opportunities for second and third sons of aristocrats (more likely to be homosexual, cf "maternal immune hypothesis"). The religious masses, however, have always been kept conveniently ignorant of logic and critical thinking.
