They really should have had it so in the endtimes that after the elf goddess revealed herself as the lady and told the brettonians to go on a last crusade, as they're about to enter the empire the REAL lady pops out of a puddle and reminds them that there's no honour or chivalry in abandoning your land to the ravages of war and that they were abandoning their knightly creed by forgetting their noblesse oblige to serve elven goals, at which point they turn round and go protect their people. Then their destruction in the end times would have at least been palatable and the lore wouldn't have been subverted to the elves.
