Most people have no clue what an engineering feat it was for a 12 year old and his friend to figure out the engine set up with a mower vertical shaft engine! I hope many kids watch this and get the building itch! Thanks again guys!

When I was ten, my mom helped build a wooden go-kart. Taught me perseverance. Became an ASE Master at 18 years old and a BMW Master at 20. No longer in automotive but a lot translates into other trades.
Back when I was a kid in the 70's kids made wooden go karts alot. The reason being not every parent could afford a new or used steel one. They worked an were fun as hell.
we did faster lawn mowers, we moved the mower deck to the back (like a bush hog) with a 5hp motor powering the deck , and a 7hp (or greater) motor running the "tractor". some went 30 mph ! One had a 250 Honda motorcycle engine/transmission. Mow in 1st gear, ride in 4th. LOL
My father made a wooden go kart and he didnt have no engine for it or peddles, And the thing had rope steering. He and his friends called the go kart a “gig”.
Thanks! This is awesome! I’m a mom to an 11 year old boy who has wanted to build a go kart for years! We have no fancy tools so this is a great place to start!
A tip to anyone doing this if you have bike parts laying around you can use the handlebars to turn by drilling through the wood the size of the wheel mounts and you put them through and tighten bolts on the bottom to keep them from coming out then you can drill holes in the tubing for more bolts to keep it from scraping the ground.
Yeah baby!! We grew up with something like that!! Except we used a car steering wheel from the junkyard, added a spring and rope and BAM instant steering!! So much fun!! Thanx guys!! You’re too cool!!
I haven't gone through all comments but... All hand saws have a 90° & 46° set square built into handle. I will let you figure it out lol. I love it as thats where i started when i was 10 yrs old. Another great build guys. Awards for creativity and functionality and having the balls to test out your creations. And pressing the boundaries of what can be done with a little imagination. Thank you.
So i been thinking lately on making something out of wood for my gf to go out for long outdoor walks, (shes in a wheelchair) and honestly this would work even if you made it 2 seat until i get parts for proper steering i think she’d enjoy the outdoors again. So glad i found this
Many kids these days, stuck in their rooms blasting aliens and the like. Does absolutely nothing for their development. In the 60,s in Ireland we built these, but without the motors (obviously) and we called them "Guiders". We had ball bearings at the back. Some noise. So she sat higher at the front because we used old pram wheels. Mean looking things , but the fun of the build and getting the parts on no money at all, really tested your ingenuity. Oh and by the way, when you spun her, the ball bearing "wheels" at the back threw out some sparks I can tell you. What joy! Well done boys. That,s a great build.
2 words for ya, rope steering. Mount a steering wheel on your handle bar mount with a rod going down. On the bottom of your steering rod mount a pulley with a groove at least wide enough to accommodate 3 coils of rope (more = more friction and less chance of slipping but 3 is typically enough for a slow cart). The larger the pulley the more responsive the steering will be, smaller gives finer control but you will need more revolutions of the wheel to reach full lock. Next, fix the end of a rope to the top of your steering board, as close to the wheel as you can making sure the rope mounting point is on a level with where the top coil of rope will be on the pulley. Wrap the rope 3 times around your pulley keeping the rope tension tight and attach the other end to the bottom of the opposite side of your steering board. Fix the rope coming off the bottom of the pulley to the underside of the steering board on the other side, that will keep the geometry better aligned. You can also install guides to help keep the rope from popping off the pulley if you didn't measure things up right. If done right you will have a cheap and dirty steering system that should give you full lock both ways.
Great work, guys! Very much appreciated. I actually made one with my son with a busted pressure washer... we had great fun. BUT on first try, i flipped the go kart! just some road burns. Good thing i did not let my kid go first. Too much steering, too much power, and a bad driver. So, if you are doing this with kids, i highly recommend spending the extra $120 for a proper steering system. We will be upgrading next week.

If you make a metal engine plate with elongated holes, bolt the engine mount plate to the wood and drill out the wood below the elongated holes that should keep your engine in place. To make it even better use two mounting plates one on top and one under the wood this would ensure that your engine stays put.
Thank you so much on showing me where to get everything I'm in a wheelchair and I'm going to make one my wheelchair can roll on it. This is such a fun starter project we shouldn't forget this important safety feature, and as my shop teacher used to yell at us, wear your eye protection you only have one set of eyes!
You should have done a full rod or axle at the back, the way you did it with the short pieces is not safe, a few bumps later and it will come off. No chain guard and that chain will bitch slap you on your left shoulder.
I used a level on my karts. I put the level long ways from the left side of my clutch to the left side of the sprocket then just like up the dot on the level and it’s straight. Mostly use this technique on my American Express and my PRC Banshee
