Was there many times too. House band was Texas Weather. Anyone might show up and jam. Ray, John Nitzinger, Willis Alan Ramsey Incredible jams!! Also had Shiner Beer night. 50 cents a bottle. Only way they could get rid of it
"me and that dancer hit it off...like a metaphor" Sheer songwriting brilliance. We're so fortunate to spend an evening with him in Port Aransas every December. Sets the tone for the holidays!
And that's saying something 'cause Dave had great musical taste. I've seen Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Tod Snider, Joe Ely and a bunch of other great singer/songwriters on Letterman.
Heard him play this on the You Tube Video of him @ some bar in Tennessee recently. He was able to take his time and put more heart and soul into it. If you liked this one you should look up the other one and watch the whole concert. I highly recommend it! Love it!
Ray Wiley Hubbard for me is like JJ Cale is to many. Ray’s songs are clever stories that make you laugh, create a mood, paint strange and familiar pictures, and just think. I love this man. A good friend of mine Matt King wrote a song with him called Hell In the Henhouse. Ray’s songwriting has certainly been an influence on Matt and that is a good thing. Check out Matt’s stuff, particularly Apples and Orphans and Rube, some of the best music you’ll ever hear, but it’s not mainstream, which is good in some ways and bad in others. Good because sometimes when artists go mainstream they are forced by the people financing the music to write something that’s forced to fit the market place and then you wouldn’t have the great music that comes from guys like Ray and Matt, they refuse to cowtow to that way of selling out. It’s also bad because so many will miss out on hearing their stuff, because it’s not readily available. Do yourself a favor, FIND their music and support these fantastic musicians, you’ll be glad you did.
Great...I me Freddie King in Mother Blues a few months before he passed. He drank beer with us and had a great time. John Nitzinger was playing that night and he asked Freddie up and he played Going Down. I will never forget that night. Mother Blues used to be our favorite hang out.
first heard ray wylie about, oh, 50 years ago. he performed after the dallas annual marathon solo each year and at the art festival held outdoors on the dallas state fair grounds. we both had brown hair and no eyeglasses. time flies; talent is forever. thanks, ray wylie, for all the memories.
he really is. hes from my home town of New Braunfels, TX. Met him many times. really very down to earth and just a all around good guy. His wife and son are really nice too.
Also got to see him at the Sportatorium with Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody. His band back then was called the Cowboy Twinkies and it was an amazing show.
If you ever get a chance to just sit and chat with this man, its amazing!! The stories!!! He was best friends with Stevie Ray Vaughn and he has some amazing stories about his as well.
I recently had the opportunity to meet Ray and spend time with him after a couple shows and was amazed by how gracious and humble he was with me. His relationship with Stevie Ray was a highlight of our conversation and Ray's love for him was evident. I don't think I've ever had a greater experience outside the birth of my children and my marriage. A true gentlemen and an unheralded artist.
I totally agree; RWH was obviously working within some programming time constraints. It’s a great song and needs more time in order to appreciate the character development. Just caught what I consider to be his best rendition of it. He closed his Austin City Limits gig with it last night (January 23, 2021). Check it out; “cooler’n hell!”
Had him sign my butterscotch, blonde Telecaster.. ... just below the tone knob.... I'm not a real good player by any stretch So I always keep my day job..... Never would have been invited by Dave.....even before he retired But Ray Wylie's a genius and through rhythm and song ..... keeps my hopes inspired
Love Ray Wylie Hubbard. I have seen negative comments on Letterman but you are going to miss him soon when he retires. He has his own quirky sort of humor.
Yes- Being from Dallas I saw Ray Wylie at Mother Blues! Yes, we all drank too much but God was he too cool, made us roudy and crazed, Mother Blues was legendary party nights
If this appearance helps Ray and his family then its a good a thing, but for those that know him just think of all the other songs that would have been more representative of his talent as troubadour/writer and performer. To anyone that is not familiar with him please go search the internet for more extended performances.....and yes I used to see RWHubbard at Ma Blues usually on Sunday night for for cheap burgers and pitcher beer.
Letterman has given more Austin and Texas acts an audience than any other talk out there. After 35 years on the air, he obviously has a personality you can't seem to see.
U may not like his demeanor but he DOES have good taste...he loves Ray and a lot of his peers. Zevon too, Costello. Just one of the many reasons he was the king. Then there is this: th-cam.com/video/M65Dx0STe2M/w-d-xo.html
The days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I had a really good day...... Man RWH is a genius!
This dude represents everything that was great about that late 70s singer/songwriter Austin scene.
No matter how many times I hear this song I still laugh every time he busts into Poke Salad Annie
Every time
He's one of my favorite and greatest songwriters ever
Same
Sad part is, only ten of us recognize it!
Yea, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Hit it off like a metaphor.
Great tune and amazing lyricist. Love how he ended the song stating his gratitude for everyone. Great way to live life!
Love Ray! Seen him live and have all his albums.
Yes it’s hilarious 🤣
"And we hit it off like a metaphor." Possibly one of the best lines I have ever heard in my life.
Yup
Ray is an amazing song writer, has written a lot of well know county music songs such as Cross Canadian Ragweeds " Sickin Tired of Being Sicken Tired"
So good! Made me simile.
His autobiography is titled
A Life… Well, Lived. Ray is hilarious!
Still one of the Best of Americana and songwriting.
"We hit it off like a metaphor"
fire.
Great song to do on Letterman. Crowd didnt know what hit 'em.
I remember Mother Blues. It was a great party bar. Been a RWH fan for a long, long time... Glad to see he has a new CD..like the song..
Was there many times too. House band was Texas Weather. Anyone might show up and jam. Ray, John Nitzinger, Willis Alan Ramsey
Incredible jams!!
Also had Shiner Beer night. 50 cents a bottle. Only way they could get rid of it
@RAYWILEYHUBBARD we love you in Waxahachie Texas!!! Tell Luke, mr. C. Soloman and the mrs. Hubbard HOWDY YA’ll ❤️🙏🏻
and the day's I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, ….well I have really good days….
A WHOLE lotta wisdom in that statement. Hell I've known people who have lived their entire lives and never, no NEVER learned how to do that.
"me and that dancer hit it off...like a metaphor" Sheer songwriting brilliance. We're so fortunate to spend an evening with him in Port Aransas every December. Sets the tone for the holidays!

Definitely one of Dave's best musical guests
And that's saying something 'cause Dave had great musical taste. I've seen Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Tod Snider, Joe Ely and a bunch of other great singer/songwriters on Letterman.

That quote blew me away, try to live daily. Makes life simpler. RWH shares a lot of hard earned wisdom...

Great...I me Freddie King in Mother Blues a few months before he passed. He drank beer with us and had a great time. John Nitzinger was playing that night and he asked Freddie up and he played Going Down. I will never forget that night. Mother Blues used to be our favorite hang out.

The entire world needs to get on the RWH train ! ! !
Love original music 🎶 like this not cookie cutter main stream dumbed down for the masses!
😎 Cool original artistry!
Ed Heffelfinger, I don't know who you are, but I love you for posting this. It's one of my favorite things on Planet Earth. Thank you! ❤️
Also got to see him at the Sportatorium with Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody. His band back then was called the Cowboy Twinkies and it was an amazing show.

This is what all music should aspire to. Outstanding.
Some stunning lines there. Unusually brilliant
Holy SHIT, I love this guy!
This is a rushed version of the song, recommend listening to the original version. one of my favorite songs.
Yeah it it loses a little bit at this tempo but it's still awesome
I totally agree; RWH was obviously working within some programming time constraints. It’s a great song and needs more time in order to appreciate the character development.

He was cool for a long time before he became something of a douchebag. Won’t miss him a bit.

Mr RYH is the smoothest act. If only Letterman had a personality.........
Letterman has given more Austin and Texas acts an audience than any other talk out there. After 35 years on the air, he obviously has a personality you can't seem to see.
cheaper travel!
