Minnesota Rancher. Great video Gary. I'm sure you already know this, but a tit for new trappers, if deep snow is a possibility, mark your sets really well! Deep snow changes the look of the whole landscape and a snow load on branches and ribbons can make it quite challenging to find traps and snares. Keep it up!
It sure can! Snow changes everything. This year since the trees are dead anyway, and burnt black, I use the blaze chopped onto the tree. That white inner wood really shows up against the burnt black bark. And it's off the ground by head high so snow shouldn't be a problem.
They are called chore gloves! They are very handy to have! I hope that other wolf is still there and you get him! Can't wait to see the beaver trapping! Good luck with everything my friend!
That's them! They are great gloves really, but get wet pretty fast. I hope he's still around. I need to check traps today, maybe there will be tracks at least.
Sounds like the 5th. one has gone to a better place. We have about 8 inches here at the house , and more in the Mountains , calling for more later this week. Good luck this week.
I'm a little bit worried about it actually. There's a couple of hills there that were kind of slick yesterday. It is snowed more since then. I hope I can get back in there and out again without getting stuck, or sliding off into the ravine. The Long Walk home!
I think maybe so? I'm a little worried about going in there actually. There's a couple of hills that are steep and slick. I'd hate to get stuck or end up in the ravine it's a Long Walk home!
Looks like early winter is everywhere this year. We got the first some snowfall a couple of weeks ago. Next week, the weather trend predicts daily snowfall. Stay warm, thanks for sharing!
Morning! You know I didn't see any elk up in Santa at my aunts house either. Seen lot of deer, mostly do's. Only saw a few buck's. But I did see a nice mule deer!!. Of course it wasn't in season. Nice rifle !!!
Friend up in Fairbanks introduced me to "Ragwool" gloves on a moose hunt in '03. Even a bit wet, they stayed warm, came well up above the wrist with a fairly tight wrist. They worked well inside a pair of thinner leather gloves. Bought two pair in the Army Navy Store in Anchorage for about $10 a pair back then. I think I finally lost the last one maybe five years ago. Got real sloppy and slimy with maybe a couple or three inches, was gone by late afternoon in the valley floor. Ma Nature might be serious about this winter. Better get some more firewood moved next to the house, I think. Have fun, don't got caught!
Wool really is the best, except for the itch! We had an inch or so in the yard yesterday, but it's melted off. A lot up high....I'm kinda worried about tomorrow's trap check....The wooly worms had a thin stripe, or no stripe at all this year....not a good sign.
You are absolutely right rag wool gloves are awesome hunting gloves the ones I get have the rubber dots for grip and a fleece lining and they will absolutely keep your hands warm even when wet unlike the chore gloves which are still my main everyday gloves but for hunting, I'll grab the wool gloves everytime
@deadnorth8333 Back in the 70s, stationed up in the missile fields from just below Browning, MT in a big arc east out past Lewistown. Wind would come off the prairie in Alberta aimed at us like we had bullseye on our back. As the boss, in the winter, seemed like my biggest job was rotating guys into warming shelter, checking em for frostbite, making sure they were lucid and clear headed (playing with BIG explosives and such) .The old Air Force arctic parka with wolf and coyote ruff on the hood were outstanding, and they issued us canvas mukluks with rubber soles and a couple sets of heavy felt liners. Wore two pair of heavy wool socks in them, sometimes knee high nylon stocking. NO one said nothing cause everyone did the same. Me feet NEVER got cold nor wet in those, except for sweating too much. The Army cold weather gear I got in the Guard was pathetic in comparison.
@@darreldwalton8763 Yeah wouldn't be without wool, especially on backcountry excursions where getting soaked is always a possibility and I just love the new itchless wool (Merino)
Supposed to warm up this coming week, that snow will just turn to mud. I've got some Bridger #5s and some TS 85s if you need anymore beaver gear. Going out looking for an elk tomorrow. Tight chains!

Once upon a time you couldnt do that drive and not see deer and elk sign if not the critters themselves. You had the herd at boogerville,on top, just across the bridge,1st or 2nd meadow and that was just getting to the backside of the mine.
I know....it's very sad to see. Boogerville is a wasteland now after that fire. I sure hate to see those cabins gone. I heard that cabin back on East Boulder Creek burned down too.
Thanks! I was born in Virginia near Arlington Cemetary...once Robert E. Lee's plantation. I started wearing this when the Liberals started trying to erase history. I'm not racist, I just don't think it's right to dishonor Americans on either side.
There were some prime hunting areas around here that had lots of mule and whitetail herds that the wolves completely decimated. You'd be lucky to see a lost deer here and there anymore. You should lower your tire pressure to 15-20 psi. It will really smooth out those washboards and increase traction.
That is a nice rifle you have. It is a shame it's made in Japan. They have lost a lot of business because of that. But as long as the quality is good, I guess that is all that matters. I know the price went way up on them rifles when they changed over. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin
It really is a shame. The USA was the world supplier of sooo many things, but not anymore. It's a well made rifle, but kind of sad they took the business over seas.

In the Bitterroot mountains and frabk church the wolves have eliminated the elk herds and now they are scared... we did get 6 elk between archery and rifle season .... But they were all solo and not very vocal
Exactly. A lot of them are either in town, or private ranches closer to people, away from the wolves. Trouble is, they are causing problems, do Fish & Game has been handing out depredation tags like candy. We won't have any left if this keeps up.
Enjoying your videos ! I didn't realize you were in the Salmon / Challis area . My inlaws live in Challis, love that area ! Saw a video of your pie plate trick as well as that foam paper . Have you had any luck using that ?
Boy do I hear you. We got blessed with CWD here in Alberta spread in farmed Elk from Saskatchewan originally imported from good old USA. 17 percent of mule bucks have it. I am 65 & just haven't bothered two seasons now. Got blessed again with covid over holidays sick 15 days now. I mean horses need trailer & feed. Naa I just going to buy a beef. For me steak is trophy. P.S. aybe old timer do like me. Plant trees for game. Build it they will come! Crab apples & wild apples. Northwest Poplars, Golden Willows mountain ash, Anything at all spread them out. Golden Willows are best for making clones. Get some kids in on it.
Dang I hate to hear that. There are several diseases in our deer and elk now....and us too! I had covid, (Zombie Virus I call it) and it was not a lot of fun! I think I had it twice, but was only tested once. Worst part for me was the "Brain Fog"....I hope you are feeling better and get well quick!
They are good guns! In a single shot, the 30-30 can use pointed bullets too. If you reload, you can use a pointed boat tail and a hotter load....probably be closer to a 308 than a 30-30. 45-70 is a great cartridge also. I have several of them too!
A couple weeks ago at camp in the Bitterroot mountains i was surrounded by a pack of wolves... I got some vocals recorded. Im going to put on a yt video
Good Morning Muskrat, You've done really well trapping wolves, probably saved several cows. Good Luck with the Beavers, are you going to live trap any ? Have a Great Day. P S. Don't forget about the spare tire. 😊
C'mon! My wife and I have harvested 19 elk in the last twenty years. (You'll see a more elk if you hunt 'em.) All of them are two-pointers Two ears. All without a horse anywhere near. There's something called a meat sled... Just hunt uphill in the snow. We can take out half an elk at a time.
Yourself and a Gentleman who names his you tube channel Trapping World Dave Vandermere are my favourite trapping Channels , keep up the good work .👍Just wondering if perhaps you have a PO Box where viewers of your Channel can send you gifts or parcels 📦?
Welllllllll fortunately Miroko is what it is, a partner of Browing, at one point Browning went to Japan to sue them out of business, once there they realized that altho close but not exact copy of Browing, and better to work together than compete against Miroko, Browning undoubtedly has the reputation , and you pay for it BUT Mroko is more ....... inexpensive 🙂 thousands less for a firearm that is identical in all ways produced side by side in same factory, uses American Walnut stocks vs European for Browning and offers better engraving than Browning, I had a Miroko premiere grade O U 12 gage skeet and skeet I traded 2 new rem. 700 left hand 25 06 scopes and mounts for, that was a thing of beauty in everyway lol especially shooting rem. slugs out to 75 yards most touching each other, ya ya i can hear ... oh bs lol, I went to Pa. school of gunsmithing early 70's and was asked to Ogden Utah for 2 weeks when Browing had a custom shop there ya ya more bs lol the truth being I have met many men some in coveralls that could quote me chapter and verse on firearms and I listened carefully, browning was a ne plus in firearm design, think about the 94 winchester pre 64 and post 64 it still kills deer still does its job but reblue the action and its purple !!!😱😰😮
They do make nice guns. I actually have two of these Highwall rifles. They are made differently inside than the originals also. They look the same, but really they are not the same rifles. It irritates me that they aren't still made in the USA, but at least they are still being made. The Italians do a good job too.
@@MuskratOutdoors I agree with ,you, my point was far better Japan than the US , quality was ditched in favor of the dollar oh sure they could have produced the same quality firearms and people wouldn't pay the price , American made bolt actions are excellent rifles, CNC wonders of technology but they sure as hell aint purty Ill shut up now lol
@@ar1701 That American made, "Henry" company......not great guns! Plastic fron sight on the 22 IO bought for Cindy, and I think the finish is paint? I don't think it's blued? It shoots good, but I'm disappointed in the quality. A gun made in the USA should be better than that!

Yes but Gary it's a dry cold lol
HAW! VERY TRUE!!! At least that's what we tell ourselves!
Thinking about buying a 1885 uberti highwall thinking about getting one in 30-30 or 45-70
They are good guns!
Very Cool! I love hearing them! I'll watch for it! About where were you? (Closest town)

That time of year, I use rubber gloves insulated keep you hands warm and dry.
I should get some good ones, as well as these cotton ones.
Yes sir no more wet gloves and keep those ape gloves for other projects
Good Morning Muskrat, You've done really well trapping wolves, probably saved several cows. Good Luck with the Beavers, are you going to live trap any ? Have a Great Day. P S. Don't forget about the spare tire. 😊
Thanks Steve! I don't have a good way to live trap them except for snares. I did get that tire fixed!!
You already have snow? I'm in Australia, we are heading into Summer.
Up high there's quite a bit. Here at the house, we had an inch or so, but it's melted now. Have a great Summer!
Hard to pack out by your self.
They are heavy! I should have brought my sled.
I need lessons! Ha!
Just traded a beaver job for some ts 85's
As soon as I get someone to sit with the wife I'll be working a little.
Good! Yeah, you need to get out some.....
Yourself and a Gentleman who names his you tube channel Trapping World Dave Vandermere are my favourite trapping Channels , keep up the good work .👍Just wondering if perhaps you have a PO Box where viewers of your Channel can send you gifts or parcels 📦?
THANKS! HA! I don't, but send me an email muskrat14@hotmail.com
🦌❤️👴✝️🤠💒❄️🍁 cool sir
Thanks!
I'd rather have wolves than elk! I love trapping
I think so....nothing quite like chasing wolves! Elk are too big to hunt anyway....
Ohhh you should never talked about not having a spare 😐
Ikr! 😊👍
I know! Jinxing myself for sure! I did get it fixed yesterday, but I still don't want to have to use it!
Ha! It's kind of funny....when I didn't know it was flat, I was happy! Sure wouldn't have been if I needed it though!
Wolf means no elk trap them my brother.
True...that and bad Winters.
He gone
I think so...
Face it wolves mean less game, and you can keep that white stuff out there, don’t send any east please.
True. Yeah, I'm not really ready for it yet! But here it is.....
@@ar1701 I agree. Pretty sad what it's become.
@@ar1701 That American made, "Henry" company......not great guns! Plastic fron sight on the 22 IO bought for Cindy, and I think the finish is paint? I don't think it's blued? It shoots good, but I'm disappointed in the quality. A gun made in the USA should be better than that!
