I read somewhere that when Beethoven sent this sonata to the dedicatee he said something like "in these variations you will find all that I remember of your childhood and youth". It takes a magical performance like this to bring that tenderness out.

I said, three years ago: " watch out for Elisabeth Brauss, she will be our new star". Then playing with Noa Wildshut. And now this recording from 2020 is almost history, it is already 2022. Time passes...

I can only say: The more I listen to this Beethoven Sonata no 30 played by Elisabeth Brauss, the more I like her interpretation. It is absolutely amongst the best I have heard so far.

Came here after watching the Wigmore Hall recital. I have a feeling we will be watching her for decades to come. Rather than compare her to the greats I think it’s fair to say she’s marking her own path. A true scholar of the text with the greatest amount of musicality, control and respect for sound I’ve ever seen. This performance was scintillating and illuminating.

Absolut bewundernswert!

The little I've heard from this young pianist has greatly impressed me, I like her unaffected purposeful approach to the instrument. I feel we could be hearing and seeing a future Beethoven exponent on evidence of this outstanding performance.

As I understand it Beethoven wrote this op. 109 in 1820, at the age of 49 or 50, when he was completely deaf, couldn´t hear a single note. What a wonder it is for us then to be able to listen to this gorgeous uptaking! As if his thoughts about music have been transported to us in a somewhat magical way, 250 years after he was born. And played by a 25 old pianist, in this covid-19 year 2020, it sure is magic.

Oh my god, what a performance. I have heard a lot of pianists and many concert-critics like to say: she/he reminds me of .....but Elisabeth Brauss has her very own musical language and she listens to herself while playing and feels the moment.

If I should dare to have something more to say about this, it is that she has that exact touch of the piano tangents, and combined with the right tempo, the right dynamics, the right thoughts about this music (her thoughts, not mine) and also the right lyricism, for me gives this an aura of something that seems to be perfectly complete.

Yes, and this is the Beethoven sonata I love the most, and it happens to be Elisabeth Brauss playing it. And yes, I have also this Elisabeth as one of my new favourite pianists. So can it be better? I doubt it. Whenever I hear Elisabeth Brauss´ playing I always think: "This is perfect". So can something that is perfect be more perfect? As I said: I doubt it. My liking of Elisabeth Brauss´sound is not about perfection, it is about something that is hard to describe, but maybe I can call it emphathy for the music? As if she longs for the music and earns to get it as soon as possible.

It is a little bit sad that I never in my life before have listened carefully to this, for example the variations. But it is never to late, and now I fully understand how wonderful Beethovens piano sonatas can be. And Elisabeth brings this to clarity and insight, as if Beethoven was aiming for a better world in this piano works. I think he was, as we all are, but Beethoven had more in his head (despite the fact that he couldn´t hear anything), he wanted this music in his head to come out to all of us that can hear it clear and well. And he succeeded. Something to think about, this year 2020, when we celebrate 250 years since he was born.

She nails the off-beat accentuations starting at 1:36 beautifully. Most pianists butcher or completely ignore this, even amongst the "greats".

It is interesting to compare Elisabeths interpretation of this op 109 with sir Andras Schiffs newly made recordording of the same opus at Wigmore Hall. I have to say that I prefer Elisabeths interpretation, even if it is like swearing in church! This sonata has become my favourite of all Beethovens piano sonatas.
