For me, walking to the farlands was rewarding in of itself, all of my motivation was internal. I had this laser focused obsession with it for months and in fact I still have to resist the urge to do feats similar to it.

If the farlands existed to this date, using the nether and elytra, I wonder if anyone would walk to the farlands if the bit limit was 64 (9,223,372,036,854,775,807,) or 5.39053788E16 (53905378800000000) blocks
Commands were server-only (chat as well), the server functionality got integrated into single player (in fact integrating the server itself and making the client app a client-server pair) only in 1.3.1, in 2012. Before that, we had to install mods or set up a server and copy the map there.

You’ll get there maybe a bit more enthusiasm but don’t over do it!
If the far lands were real and if you walked 20 miles per day it would take you about 390 days which is over a year to just walk to the far lands.
