@@karieschneider746 I was speechless when I saw the actor they cast as Henry. I watched a couple of episodes and my friend and I spent the time tearing each episodes to shred. The best Henry VIII I have seen over the years was Keith Mitchell--now when you watch "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", well, he is believable as the infamous Tudor monarch, unlike so many other later renditions (Ahem, Ray Winstone--even Richard Burton is more believable than Winstone).

When there's a lack of any evidence, assuming that a person was shaken by the sudden death of their family seems much more reasonable than assuming they weren't. People might do bad things, even villainous, but unless they're psychopaths, they are still people with all the usual emotions. For a respected historian that Starkey undoubtedly is, he does seem to take quite a cartoonish view of many historical characters.

  • @musicloverlondon6070

David Starkey's reaction to Mantel's imagined emotions of Cromwell on the loss of his family is interesting. He says there's no evidence for it, hence it's a total fiction. That's a bit of a leap; if there's no evidence for it (other than the normal human reactions to bereavement we usually have) then there's no evidence against it either so Mantel is entirely free to suggest Cromwell's emotions and human side in her depiction of him. As the Cavalier says, it's not a leap in the dark that he was indeed affected by their loss!

    • @2ndavenuesw481
      @2ndavenuesw481 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not based on any reports = fiction. Starkey's point is well-taken: for all we know he felt nothing at all. Of course it would be total fiction to make that depiction as well, despite Cromwell's reputation.

At this point I get the sense David Starkey revels in being a noted fly in the ointment, and that he argues for things simply because he enjoys getting people's hackles up.

@@yes_head He is trying to point out that families worked differently back then. Child mortality was high and a fact of life even for the rich. Children had a role and a duty for securing family advantage while girls were valued less. He likely wouldn't have come home, played with the kids and read bedtime stories to them. They would be quite distant and the relationship would likely not be hugs and kisses especially for someone so burdened with stressful work and travel.

Mantel posits the death of his wife and daughters as contributing to his later ruthlessness:
"He once thought it himself, that he might die with grief: for his wife, his daughters, his sisters, his father and master the cardinal. But pulse, obdurate, keeps its rhythm. You think you cannot keep breathing, but your ribcage has other ideas, rising and falling, emitting sighs. You must thrive in spite of yourself; and so that you may do it, God takes out your heart of flesh, and gives you a heart of stone."

By far my favourite 'modern' Tudor-related series so far,. I loved the costumes and the music. To anyone that thinks that Cromwell wouldn't be somewhat upset after his daughters and wife died, I would say that's ridiculous. I really enjoyed how they showed this side of him because after all, if it's a production seen entirely from his point of view then you would have to assume there are days when scheming is not all he thinks about. Claire Foy is my favourite actress to portray Anne thus far. I love the use of French (more than we can say about the Mary Queen of Scots movie), her display of strength and courage to her being very vulnerable at the end (I only have a little neck). Truly the best scene in terms of emotion. I also loved that comment by Cromwell, I need guilty men, so I've found men who are guilty. Though not necessarily as charged. I also like that you see a small hint of Jane Seymour's 'ambition', if you will, towards the end. She knew what she was doing. Great review, I look forward to the full one!

I think a lot of that attitude may come from the fact that marriages were arranged and families had more to consider than their feelings in Henry's court. But, they were all human. Just because your world doesn't include endless quality time, does NOT mean that love for one's children is foreign.

I really liked the book "Jane Boleyn, the Infamous Lady Rochford" to give a more accurate picture of her.
I also liked the flirtatious between Mary Boleyn & Cromwell, again we are learning more about her and she was practically abandoned by her family in the period between her second marriage and Anne's death.
Charity Wakefield (Mary Boleyn/Carey) is the highlight of the cast (although I think Mar k Rylamce & Claire Doy are excelled scene partners)

"Wolf Hall" totally ignored the fact that Cromwell ripped Henry off by extorting money from the targeted monasteries. He demanded and took many, many bribes from frantic Abbots who pled with him to postpone the closing and destruction of their monastries, and he pocketed the money. He stole from the Crown. I think that was one of the real reasons he was executed, although it is most often blamed on the Anne of Cleves caper.

I think it's important to remember that the Mantel books are novels, not history, so they are not supposed to be faithful to what actually happened and there's going to be some stuff that's made up. Making Cromwell sympathetic and More a villain was what Mantel decided to do. Not being a historian, she had no obligation to stick to the facts.

I love Wolf Hall! This is probably one of my faivorate book and tv mini series.
About your characarestic note about Jane symore; Hillary mental wrote about her more in the seccond book: Bring the bodies (hope I remebering right the name, sorry if not...) the first 4 episodes are based on the first book, and the left 2 on the seccond book. Some of the quets and events of the book were cut and paste togther to be add into the serios- like Cromwell's daughters death, which was almost a year after his wife death. In the seccond book Jane seemed colder and stronger when she understabd that she might have a chance to be the queen (one of the fictional changes of the book was that Jane thought that she might be Cromwell next wife, a match between low-noble woman and the seccond strongest man in england of course might be a bit loose here, though her sister did merry his son at the end so it also might be possible. When she relaize she has a better match than Cromwell, she is still kind to him but less nicer). The selotion of the tv drama was to make her colder and not writing more dialuges between her to Cromwell.
As for the dinner over Anne's body, it is an image that comes in his imagenation when he starts with the plot against Anne. Her falling is discribed over half of the book- almost 200 pages that were had to cut into one episode.
Cromwell's daughter Anne Cromwell does compare between herself to More's daughter in the book, and it is hinted that that is how she convinced her father to let her learn.
Overall, I think that the tv drama cut of only things that are intresting to read but are unnecesry for the plot itself- quiet chalange. Though in the book they wrote on the cook that had tried to poisen Fisher, and I did hope I could have seen that on the screen.
    Sorry for any grammer/english mistakes.

We SHOULD be portraying historical figures (even relatively bad ones...and I think Cromwell is a tad more grey) as not sympathetic per say..but human. This is critical to understand. When a serial killer called the Original Night Stalker was recently found in his 70s decades after his crimes people were shocked he had been a cop and naval man and normal and all this jazz...yeh...people who do bad things don't have devil horns and a black cape, they look like you and me (there is a similar concept to this in psychology called the 'halo effect' where people assume if you are good looking you're more successful and a better person and less evil).
They usually get away with these things because they seem so normal and are able to convince people what they are doing is necessary.
They also don't think of THEMSELVES as nefarious, ever. They all think they're good people. Notice nobody ever says "yes, i am a racist/homophobe/sexist" they'll say "no no I'm not a X just/but..."

I'm just about to watch the last episode of this now. I was looking at the episodes go by and wondering "jeez they're not gonna have much time to squeeze in all the Ann of Cleves and Jane Seymour stuff at this rate" but according to the episode guide I just looked at...they don't...which is very disappointing because I quite like the portrayal of Cromwell, and Ann.
The Tudors did it right and this one seems to get it right, in showing Ann as a mixed character, some portrayals make her too sympathetic and let the audience forget she was quite ok with having enemies killed even when they were in a weak position, and feared Jane exactly because she was using the same method Ann used to gain power. It also shows how Cromwell had not much choice but to turn on Ann because she was turning on him and was on her way out, so he didn't wanna go down with her the way the Cardinal did with the last queen.
I'm interested to see how he ropes in the others though, he had to have known Anns 'lovers' were innocent, maybe he saw it as a chance to get rid of some of his enemies who he thought would take him down anyway, and he had to strike first? It was a ruthless dog eat dog time, in politics now worst that will happen is a well oiled (financially) retirement, back then you could be executed.

@@The_Laughing_Cavalier Watching it I see what you're saying about the Woolsey play, I recall the Tudors did an episode end sequence with it, and it appeared in the Henry VIII and his Six Wives movie too.
BUT...it does show a kind of nastiness in her...to do a play mocking a man you just cut down, I mean he's dead...HE'S DEAD what more can you do to him? Whatever he did to you (calling her a silly girl, overpromising with the annulment) you got him...he's DEAD is that not punishment enough? I remember watching a documentary on death row and they asked the guards why they were civil and polite to the inmates and gave them the last meal etc, considering what they'd done and one of them said "well they are about to pay the ultimate price for what they did, they're going to be executed, torturing them on the way out just seems gratuitous". She really did have a nasty streak in her.
The show seems to be taking the position that Cromwell bought the allegations and I really doubt that, he was far too savvy a mover for that, I think he just thought 'look she's going down anyway, I don't want to go down with her, I'll just use this as an oppertunity to take down my enemies' (like if Norris really was that much of a snob to him , I'd do the same in his shoes). They debate still if Henry bought them, but Henry had, IMO, a great capacity to delude himself into thinking anything he needed to think to get his goal, dissembling and rationalizing were two big hallmarks of his personality.

I do think Claire Foy does a fantastic job with the role that she's given, but I do think I could have been a little bit happier with a much more toned-down C U Next Tuesday Anne. Even if it turned out that this is the most accurate depiction of her, she's so much more than that now. She does kind of represent all the women of her time and how men used sexuality to villainize women. I will still take this Anne Boleyn over The Other Boleyn Girl Anne Boleyn any day. There is a case for saying that he became convinced of her infidelity and struck out at her. That said, there is some evidence of an infatuation with Jane Seymour. I think the DVD for it is fairly cheap. (£8.99 on Amazon, and probably cheaper elsewhere). I think Amazon Prime has it as well if you want to watch it digitally. I doubt it would be free on TH-cam since the BBC is VERY protective of copyright. Maybe Dailymotion or somewhere like that perhaps?

You know I've seen some deleted scenes from Wolf Hall that implied Anne's sister Mary was meant to be a somewhat bigger character than she was in the finished product. When you've seen both 'The other Boleyn girl' and 'The Tudors' it's refreshing to get a portrayal of her that is somewhere in between. Without the skimpy costumes from The Tudors or the...you know what I mean, the scenes show us a version of Mary that's possibly the closest we're going to get to who she really was.

Very interesting. I found Ms Wakefield's the most memorable performance of the women's.

@@seto749 By all means it must've been. I just think it's a shame they cut those additional scenes out. Take this one for example; we know how Mary came to leave court with her new hubby but this deleted scene does give a little visual context. There are some others too framed around Mary that gave us an idea on how Anne might've felt about it: th-cam.com/video/8w0ku8RJz5U/w-d-xo.html

It's 'Here's a Health Unto His Majesty'. It was a Royalist song from 1667ish not too long after the Restoration. I made a version of it in Musescore 2 ages ago (not sure if I have the original files anywhere). There should be more professional versions of it around TH-cam with the lyrics I am sure.

I haven't read the books yet, but will try to do so. Someone I know tried and found the first one boring, which put me off a bit. What's the story about Jane Rochford? I didn't know her story had been reappraised.

I think the books / series are very good but agree overly sympathetic. I think it also underplays Cromwell's genuine evangelical sentiment though; he really was firmly committed to the New Religion. I liked Gattis as Gardiner, who really was that scheming; he did try to bring down Cranmer and Catherine Parr as well as being instrumental in the fall of Cromwell himself. I did think, great actor though he is, Jonathan Pryce was physically very unlike Wolsey. Henry's jousting accident is surely still a bit of a moot point and we have no conclusive evidence either way? More was ferociously anti-heretic despite his humanist writings and was the author of a fairy foul mouthed polemic on Luther.
I do need to watch WF again as has been a while but this seems a fair review to me, with the caveats I have raised!

I think you’ll find the scene with Anne Boleyn being dragged up the table represents Cromwell being forced to ‘serve up’ Anne to the old nobility of England (catholic) like a joint of meat who hoped the Jane Seymour would bring back Henry VIII to the old religion. As I remember this was intimated in the scene between Thomas Cromwell and Nicholas Carew! “You are a Lutheran, no Sir Nicholas I am a banker”! Forgive the misquote!

I very much needed a pick me up, and this did the trick! A basically agree with every point you made and it's so refreshing to see that someone other than myself actually loved Foy's Anne Boleyn. Did she have more to her than portrayed? YES. But, Anne could scheme, and she could be a very bold, hot headed, rude woman when she wanted to be. Plus, it's from the point of view of Cromwell. We mostly saw Anne when he did. Not during quiet moments with her friends or Henry, etc. So, you just won't get every part of her. Overall, I loved it and has rewatched it at least three times while I wait an eternity for the next series.

Damian Lewis has Henry's coloring and his rosebud mouth. However, he's not imposing enough (physically or behaviorally) to really capture Henry. Henry was charismatic and the center of attention, but Damian Lewis' Henry is too reticent and in the background.

What I don’t get is how much trouble they took to hand sew the costumes and trying to make it authentic as possible and then they don’t make period appropriate head dresses for the women. Claire Foy looked like she was wearing a shower cap. Also, her bodices were awful -all crinkly. WTF -Most all the head gear looked wrong. The dresses of Ann were not regal enough and not near enough jewels on anyone. This was a period of conspicuous consumption. The men wearing boots was weird, but I guess the square toed slippers aren’t manly enough for modern audiences. The coronation clothing of Ann all wrong-again no velvet, ermine, etc. I did really like it though, and they did a pretty good job overall. I love M Rylance and think they made a good casting choice with him. There, I’ve had my rant.

ps. and david Starkey is a know all bore - the wife and daughter's did not die at the same time (as Hilary Mantel points out in interviews). Cromwell is how Mantel sees him - it is historical drama.

I was not that impressed with Wolf Hall at all. I guess I am a History snob, that is "don't put your feelings into a Historical Character just theirs." And I fear that is what was done with this movie, And I find it strange that no one ever comments on the fact that Oliver Cromwell who brought down King Charles was related to the one who brought down Anne Boylen. Henry took that Cromwell's head and Oliver took the King's. Can't tell me there isn't a bit of revenge in there.

I loved the way Damien Lewis showed himself besotted with Anne in front of More and Cromwell. That moment told the whole story. Damien Lewis, drunk leaning on Crommy is also marvelous. So many great moments, but I was disappointed in Foy. Is it ridiculous to hope for tinted contacts when a blue eyed actress plays Anne? Evidently. Anne is supposed to stand out. I actually wish Jessica Raine had been cast as Anne.

Well, I have been considering watching this, but since I have read about its open anticatholicness, I will stay with "Tudors", which may be full of errors and strange choices, but at least pays appropriate respect towards st Thomas Moore and venerable queen Katherine de Trastamara.

David Starkey also believes that an adolescent Katherine Howard knew what consent was so she couldn't have been what modern society considered "groomed and molested," so I take his criticism with a massive amount of salt.

Given that Henry the VIII was in charge, you had to survive and Anne Boleyn wasn’t the best person alive so I would only have a problem with her portrayal if it was sympathetic

I cannot and will not buy this historical re-write of Cromwell as anything but a ruthless opportunist of the highest order. There were a lot of absolute shits at the Tudor court, and I think almost everyone was pretty ambitious and scheming, but I rank him as #1 shit in that regard. I am sure it was well acted and that it got the aesthetics correct, for the most part, but the characterizations of the historical characters is garbage... as much as we know More wasn't "A Man for All Seasons" we also know Cromwell was not anything like Mantel wants us to believe he was.

Wolf Hall is beyond brilliant - it is totally superb (as is Hilary Mantel's trilogy - deserving of all prizes and accolades). The actors in Wolf Hall are fantastic; historical detail perfect and as for atmosphere...well, the lighting, costume, locations, etc say it all. Perfection.
