  • The Hainan blue flycatcher (Cyornis hainanus) is a small songbird found in Southeast Asia. Described in 1900, it inhabits the subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests of Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Standing roughly 14cm tall, the Hainan blue flycatcher is known for its distinct sexual dimorphism. Males sport a vibrant blue plumage across their upper body, while females are typically a duller brown with a pale blue rump.
These birds are adept insectivores, primarily feeding on insects they snatch mid-air. They are territorial and solitary outside of breeding season. During breeding season, the male attracts a mate with his melodious song. The female constructs the nest and incubates the eggs, while both parents contribute to chick rearing.
Though classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, the Hainan blue flycatcher population is reportedly decreasing. This is likely due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and agricultural expansion.
