    Tim here in Arkansas we also have to send a registered letter, funny that you would mention a tow yard because we are also in the Wrecker business, I just started doing small engines again, I opened the small engine shop for my granddaughter where I can train her technicians and she will have a ready to go shop, I am about to turn 65 and my wife passed away in 2021 from Covid so it gives me something to do and keep my mind occupied.     I recently sold my small business and man, I don't miss that kind of nonsense at all. Chasing customers for payment; people lying to you; people filing bogus reviews on line and flat-out lying about what happened..... ugh. Don't miss any of that at all.

    Had a customer that stopped payment on a check. Contacted customer as to why he did that. Didn’t have a good reason just didn’t want to pay. Stopping payment on check is illegal in my state. Went to police and advise to sign a complaint and they would serve a warrant. Contacted customer said he didn’t care . Told him I wanted cash and court fees and extra for the time it took to go to court . He laughed and dared to to go ahead. Then I realized that it was his wife’s check. Which means that she would be the one served with court order. When he realized what she would do to him he said he would pay but couldn’t get to me until tomorrow. I told him he had until 3 pm to bring cash or I file court order. His wife showed up cash. He didn’t have the guts to face me

      yea, our DA loves going after bad checks. I cursed when clinton bounced the fed check in TN and not here. Guess they are easy cases to win. Did you sign this. Guilty.....

      Exactly! I've been on the other side of the counter talking to the service people about getting things repaired. They are rightfully sketchy if they don't know you. A good conversation and a few laughs, and they jump right on it. Apparently, I'm not too hard to feel out... I'm also honest, and people can tell that too...

    Good video I worked at a local bike shop for a few years and had to deal with similar things what blew me away is that people are so adamant to come in and pick up their $100 to $200 Walmart bicycle that is crap but they will leave a $1,500 bicycle sitting there for months if not 2 years at a bike shop

      Similar experience here. I had a guy that would bring his full squish next from all over the city for me to fix. I cant tell you how many times i told him itd be cheaper to buy a new one but he always insisted i fix it. He wouldnt let anyone else work on it but would watch me fix it and ask over and over if i was sure thats how it should be done.

    Local shop just closed a year ago. (retirement) They had a policy. For every small piece of equipment is was a $300 service fee deposit. Tractors were $500. If the bill was less you got the difference back. A lot of customers went somewhere else. but they were busy until they closed and didn't have customers stuff piling up with unpaid bills.

    Good advice from a business owner who knows his way around the track. Dealing with the public has lots of variations because there's all sorts of people with all sorts of situations in life. I learned these lessons working in a bicycle repair shop as a young guy and as a freelance car mechanic years later. The shop owner has a story as well, whether it is paying employees, facility expenses, taxes, whatever. All the overhead has to be covered, and I don't know of anyone who started a small business with the intention of losing money.
    On a personal note, as much as Taryl jokes around in videos with an attitude of a hard-ass, the policy he talks about of cutting a break for people who are in a rough spot shows a man with heart, ethics and empathy. Taryl is exactly the kind of small business owner I always support in my community, and I make sure to advertise for those persons on the word-of-mouth network and 5-star reviews whenever possible.

    A lot of people today want something fixed for free. They feel if they leave it long enough, you will give it to them to get it out of your shop. My Dad had an AAMCO transmission shop that had that happen several times. In Louisiana at that time, you had to send a registered letter, give them 30 days after an attempt made by the USPS to deliver, then you could apply for title to the vehicle. Once you had title you could sell the vehicle for the cost of repairs. Or sometimes, he would remove the transmission, have the vehicle towed to the owner residence, and dropped there. Several times we sat down the block and watched as the towing company drove off and the owner would run out laughing as he/she thought they had gotten the vehicle repaired for free. The look on their face as priceless when they just heard the starter whirring then looked under the vehicle to find no transmission. Getting your money from the people who want it fixed for free is a pain. Glad you had success.

    Most people think that if you are a business owner you are filthy rich no matter what business you are in. The truth is, most of us just make a living just like the rest of you, and when the work is done, we need to get paid just like you do to pay bills. Cash flow can be tough. If customers owe me $5000 and I have a $100 billl due, I'm still broke if I don't collect.

      Just had a guy; I do generator deletes for vehicles. Basically solar/battery instead of generators; but only for vehicles; no houses. Have a guy call me, wants to put a ground array on his property (not on a building) I say, yeah I can do up a quote; but you have to do/have done all the concrete work, conduit and running wire. I can supply equipment and wire the panels/Inverters; you have to handle all the building electrical (get an electrician). He agreed. So I went about my business drawing up the plans, tracking down equipment. Answering his constant stream of questions. Well he spends $5000 with me buying the inverters. Emails me, lets me know they arrived and he will get back to me in a week or two to come out. So I sit there and wait about a month. He calls me and says; “ok I’m ready to do it.” The. He says he decided to put them on his roof, he had a company come out and do all the work for that. He cut me out of everything but the inverters at this point. So he was shocked when I told him that my quote was not severable. You can’t just pick and choose line-items and assume I will do the work for that. The job was 6 hours away. He wanted me to drive 6 hours and work for a day and drove back 6 hours plus supply hardware for $1200. That $1200 was for installing them while I was already there doing a $56,000 job. Not making $800 bucks off inverter sales and 1200 installing them. Now at this point I had about 30 hours into this customer to begin with. Now he wants me to take 2 days, 1,000 miles (round trip) and hardware / hotel and paying labor. I told him I couldn’t do it, I would lose money and he will have to find someone else.
      This clown then told me “if you don’t come down then I’m going to do a charge back.”
      Well he did. My car processor took out $5600 from my business account the next day. So now I’m out $5000 on the sale and the. $5600 on the charge back. Long story short; I won the chargeback easily (had photos, his confirmation. Ect.) but my business was out over $10 grand for a month. I had just enough for payroll at that point.
      One customer took my small business to comfortably profitable to “damn I’m running out of money.” In one day.

    I had a customer dump a snowmobile on me after I rebuilt the engine for him. New everything. When I called him to come pick it up, he stone walled me to the maximum. Winter came and went, summer then fall. Its getting into November now and I know I can sell it and get my money back, plus storage fees. I call the guy back and say" Hey, Bring the title to the snowmobile, or pay up". I couldn't believe it, he dropped off the title to it that day and apologized for not calling me. His wife never wanted him to have it in the first place. Rather than start WW3 with her, he figured it was best just to leave it with me and let me sell it. I offered to give him the difference but he declined and said the extra was for the inconvenience of my sitting on it. I sold it the next week with no issues. My wife had nagged me for months concerning that snowmobile. I was glad to get that whole ordeal over with. I can relate to your story. I would have never got his mower back for him. You are one of a kind. No body does that that I know of.

    I retired from a power sports dealer last year,and we were having problems with customers bring in their SXS and quads covered in mud and cow shit (farmers).We finally started charging customers $100 to pay for our service porter spending 2-3 hours power washing the units just so the mechanic could work on them.

      Back in the late 90s I work at a Honda dealership and one customer ran a outfitting business in north central Saskatchewan Canada. It was called Tobies Trophy Treks, guy is not a live anymore. He was a good customer but he used to bring in his old beat Honda fourtrax covered in mud and blood, and rotten smelling greasy shit from his bear baits. The whole machine was covered in a foul greasy film and your hands smell, coveralls and it was very hard to get off. Hated working on that customers stuff, and you couldn't use decreased and that on it cause the animals would smell that.

      I tell my customers up front that any cleaning costs shop rate for however long it takes plus supplies. It all costs time and money whether it's cleaning mud off or a rebuild.

    Here in the state of Georgia, you have to send a register letter and run an ad in the paper, I think, 30 days. Before you can sell the equipment/vehicle. That is what we did at the shop I worked at. People think you have plenty of room/money. Thanks for the video

      I also live in Georgia. I own a check cashing store. When someone bounces a check. We have to send them a certified letter as well giving them 10 days to pay. Once we file paperwork with the court, they give them another 30 days and then they take another 30 days to give us a court date. It's a long process.

    Ever since Covid I have seen an up-tick in Lying/Entitled Customers.
    We mostly flip and fix and this year we became what it felt like a full blown repair shop. I’ve never been so stressed and aggregated over small engines.
    Last week I just took in my last repair for the year. I’m done 🤣. I like fixing and flipping these machines don’t talk back.
    Plus I’m so busy fixing everyone else’s sh*t I have no time to fix my own.
    I had one customer tell me I need anger management, my response was I need people like you to stop pissing me off.

      Wow! So, I'm not the only one. I'm not even a mechanic, just a disabled Vet and generaaly just do my own stuff . . . up until the Covid thing. Now I've got mowers, trimmers, blowers and bicycles, stereos, fog machines and all sorts of stuff coming out of my A##.
      I FINALLY got to pull my personal mower out for the first time this past Monday in order to cut my 0ver a foot tall grass. I need to trim but have people wanting their stuff. I told them up front that it could take a while and most don't seem to mind but there are a few that are in a hurry. I haven't had the "Non-Payment" or "No-Show" issue yet. I'd like to just get caught up so I can put the new clutch in my pick-up (That's been waiting since March).
      I've got three riders and 14 freebee mowers that I've been wanting to get to in order to flip some of them but STILL haven't even been able to do anything but put the tarp back in place over them after each thunderstorm.
      But It's been kind of fun. First time I ever "Accidently" got into a business.

    Hi,i had a little lawn mowing buissiness in Australia, my partner wanted to get into the higher end clientelle,you know beautiful suburbs, beautiful houses, nice cars in the driveway,the gorgeous girlfriend/wife (you get the picture),I now know why they had money 'cause they never paid their bills,i was self employed and sundays i'd turn into a debt collecter,the stories i got told were unbelievable....pretty hard to believe a preson with a Porche parked in the drive can't pay his lawn mowing bill....yeah so the first rule is just get paid....

      Yeah, I used to help my ex with her Sunday paper motor route. It was funny how the people who lived in the old not so nice looking homes always paid regularly, while the ones living in the fancy newer houses you had to keep after them to get your money.

    What about those customers that are pushy? When I was working a small engine shop long time ago, this customer comes in and got mad because we didn't have his lawnmower repaired. This customer claimed he dropped it off weeks ago (which was a total lie...I checked the ticket). So, I was willing to help this customer, but all he did scream and shout about how we didn't get to his lawnmower. The Bossman he wasn't having that and told the customer that we don't do business with rude customers, to take his lawnmower somewhere else.

    About the same thing happened to me years ago. I'm in the magneto repair business for the racing industry. I live in Memphis. Shipped a mag to Louisiana by UPS that I used at that time and forgot to check the box CASH ONLY. Customer wrote a bad check. So I called the authorities in his town in LA. Like you said send a registered letter to his address. It was returned to me. Now the state police there can go after the guy. Their fee is what ever the check's amount is they double it. A little over a year passed. Police called me and they have the guy in custody. They are sending me a check. Come to find out he owned a transmission repair business. He skipped town leaving cars up on the lifts with transmissions out!! Married a gal and took her maiden name!!!!!!

    In 1969 I got a part time job at Sears and they put me in the Garden Shop as yard help. I Knew nothing. A salesman asked me to clean up a Craftsman Riding Mower which a customer brought back (Full of muck and grass). I had heard "Steve" arguing with this customer inside the store. As I washed down the mower I observed coat hangers tied around the deck literally holding it up onto the mower frame. Steve said the customer demanded his money back based upon warranty. After I showed Steve the coat hangar, he commented the guy probably hit a stump with the mower...which the warranty does not cover but the customer was long gone by then. By August I got transferred into the store and Steve ended up in Hardware selling tools. When I would see Steve around I always thought about his argument with that Jerk of a customer. An education as to what to expect from some people.

    I used to run an RC shop in the past and I had the exact same kind of customers. Some would simply disappear after leaving something for repair never to be seen again. It's crazy the amount of stuff I got to keep for "free". I just can't understand why someone would do something like that.

    As a former Body Shop Owner, I agree with you Taryl.👍👍. Other people viewing/reading this remember in the beginning of this video he mentioned he has a sign in the shop that states the storage charges. REMEMBER that if you have a business, most state laws require YOU MUST HAVE A SIGN viewable to customers. Also document phone calls dates and times & conversations. Proper documentation will save YOU in court if it goes that far.

    The other side of coin is the same I took a mower to a shop for repair in the first part of march april came and I had not herd anything but I had another smaller one so I just put up with using it may then june comes around still no call. The later part of july I called and asked about it the guy got real mad and I wondered why he said he would call me back. September rolls around and now I needed it as I was getting ready for leaves to start turning and it had a bagger so I wanted it when I needed it. Called him again and he said he could not find it but would keep looking ( He knew it was missing in july) november comes around and he calls to say his son took it to the wrong house in april after it was done so he didn't have it anymore. Had to fight tooth and nail to get it back but in december they finally got with who had it he said he knew it was not his mower and I got the mower back. So there is good shops and bad with good and bad customers

      So through March, April, May, June,up to the end of July you weren't concerned enough about the status of your mower to make inquiry(without making a call) Sounds about it.But September arrives and now as you say"you really need it" Sounds quite odd to say the least. Whether your mower had left the business location or not ,it seems like it was existing at that shop rent free and you didn't mind that for about 6 months. You are fortunate in getting it back.

    Hey Taryl I did HVAC service for 15 years and our policy was to collect at the service call. I know why a d bag sent what he thinks it should have cost and got me up middle of night! Work hard, we definitely deserve to be paid! Nothing is free.

    In the state of Florida on cars not being picked up from your repair business you have to send a registered letter and post an ad in the newspaper, then after 30 days, you can apply for a new title in your name. At my shop, we would usually wait 90 days before we started the process of getting a title. We’ve had customers leave cars for a year sometimes two and when you’ve got bills in thousands you have to recuperate your money.

    Our state is they got 30 days to pick it up after 30 days in writing they signed stating that it’s ours to sell. That’s our state in Georgia.

    Wow! World class customer service Taryl! Very impressed! I think you handled that very well considering the outcome! I'm surprised you took the risk on that guy!!! I can only guess that the mower of his must have some kind of sentimental value - he must really love that mower lol! You must have a really good instinct when it comes to these things after doing it for so long, and something told you that it was worth the trouble - lo and behold it was - and you got paid! Very nice judgement call!!! You must be good at counting cards too :P Remind me to never gamble against you in poker haha!

    I had a similar experience. A guy brought a laptop that was infected with all kinds of viruses and malware. All I could do was wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. Did all that and called him. "Yeah, I'll stop by later this week". Never showed up. That happened a few times. I had that laptop for over a month. I eventually boxed it up and left it on his doorstep. He called later and asked what he owed me. I said "Nothing but don't ever ask me to work on anything again".

    In Texas you have to send a certified letter in 10 days after the repair and then you can sell after 30 days

    I had a customer bring in his Toro recycler walk mower for repair that needed a new drive belt. I noticed that his blade was so worn out that it was nearly half its original size. So I went ahead and replaced it. I figured that for an extra 20 dollars, he wouldn't mind. I didn't even charge any extra labor to do it.
    He came in to pick it up. The bill was $80 total, but he said he didn't ask for a new blade and he didn't authorize it. Then he preceded to tell me that he'll take the mower with the new blade on it, that he'll pay the bill for the drive belt, but wasn't paying for the blade.
    Luckily, I saved the old worn out blade from his machine. I told the customer that I'll put the original blade back on for him and take off the blade charge. He quickly changed his mind and said that he'll just pay the entire bill.
    I began saving all replaced parts on machines and tying them to the machines until the equipment is paid and out the door. I started this practice about 5 years ago when customers started complaining that there was nothing wrong with the original part and that they shouldn't pay for it. 10-15 years ago we rarely ever had that problem. Now it happens multiple times per month. It's crazy! You just have to adapt to the times, and like Taryl says, you gotta cover yourself!

    Mike from Missouri here, all we have to do is notify and post signs of your store policy. We posted 60 days. I normally gave them over 90 . Got in a few spats over it ! Have a good one buddy!!!

    Dealing with public is so tough. A few years ago a friend offered me a turn key mower repair business. After looking at all, what I call, hidden issues. I said no thanks.
    His main issue was getting help. No one wanted to work or get dirty. Anther problem, some people want you to warrant their neglect, just too much hassle.
    As of now, I just take work from good friends, neighbors and SOME relatives.

      Everyone ive heard say they cant find people to work or get dirty leave an important part out of that comment. They really mean they cant find people to work for what theyre willing to pay. I do collision repair. I've had 2 shops recruit me. Both complained they cant find anyone willing to work. One offered me $9/hr. The other offered $12. I dont put boots on for $12 and im sure not rolling $30,000+ in tools to a shop for burger flipping money.

    I’m a retired longhaul trucker. Now, I make custom knives. I don’t take deposits because if a customer decides down the road that he doesn’t want the knife when it’s done, I offer it for sale on my website. I do however, take deposits when someone wants a specific type of wood, or initials on the sheath. I had a guy give me a $50 deposit because he wanted his initials on the sheath. $50 just covers time and materials. I keep the deposit if they change their mind. I can sell the knife, but I have to make another sheath. I had one customer in all these years come unglued when he changed his mind about the knife he ordered. I explained the deposit was in case this very thing happened. I could sell the knife, but the sheath with his initials was his and not refundable. Oh well.

      I don't understand why the owner waited so long to contact the shop, it's not like he couldn't have picked up the phone or even mentioned when he dropped it off that he'd be going out of town.
      I completely understand where Taryl is coming from. Our local lawn repair service had a big issue with this years ago that led him to close shop. Even if the repairs were made it does not mean it will sell. Yes at the end he was covering his butt by giving deadlines or taking a portion of money upfront if not the full cost.

    Yeah, you work with the public long enough, you'll see it all..... I wouldn't have believed the story about the guy coming in & paying, but a couple times I saw the same thing.... This one guy, I swear, he had an item by us, and we had them sign at drop off that you had 30 days, and after that storage, and after 90 we could sell it.... Now, it rarely happened anyways, and I don't remember ever really just "selling" it flat, without knowing something, so....
    One guy, I was calling him, he'd say yeah, I'm coming in, I'll be there Friday... Nothing. Sometimes no answer. I swear it was 22 months, it was almost 2 full years.. I still had the item, and he kept saying he was coming in, and it felt like he might come in, you know?? He sounded cool on the phone... I told him once "you're gonna have to pay storage, I mean, this is getting expensive, to be real honest here.... do you want me to just sell it? I'll send you the difference?? No no I'll come in and pay, I have to have that item..... Okay... So I almost dropped a deuce in my pants, he walks in one day, out of the blue.... The storage fees & all of it was WELL over the value of the item at this point, I figured this would be a huge argument.... So I was being as calm as I could, I assumed I would be calling the cops any second, but the guy was totally cool, he was chill, he was like yeah yeah, no, it's my fault, I'll pay, I have to have the item, and he broke out the cash and paid like it was nothing..... I was quite shocked....
    Another guy, I was calling & calling, this is maybe 4 or 5 months later, he answers.... Honest to god, he says hey man, look, I got a job 1800 miles away, I can't come in, And even if I did, I sold my house, I have nowhere to go with the item..... So look, I'm sorry, it's all my fault, I put you through all this trouble.... If I tell you verbally over the phone, you can have the item, you can keep it, do whatever you want with it, is that good enough???? Sure, yeah.... So that was different.... But I could see it happening.... I got transferred once, at a big company, and it was like you can take this transfer, or you're out, yes or no, right now... This is a Thursday. So I'm like yeah, I'll take it. Okay report to this town 300 miles away Monday Morning..... Pffff! So yeah, it does happen....
    We had some people pass away.... We had a few we had no idea, they just never answered, couldn't be reached, eventually we'd sell it.... We had another oddball one, it only happened once, and we didn't know what to do.... We did consignments once in awhile, so we took this item in, sold it... And then couldn't reach the guy... I had the paperwork & the money sitting in my office forever, I figured eventually he'd call us... It was maybe 4 months, and the phone # we had went out of service, nobody ever heard of him at the address.... We were all kinda looking at each other in the office, like what do we do now????? Usually, heh heh, they want the money, right??? Heh heh heh!
    You work with the public long enough, you'll get some crazy stories....
    Okay, last one, this was pretty crazy.... Guy comes in, kind of a regular. This is years later, at an automotive related place.... Had a nice car, drops it off for some work. Work is done, a week goes by, seemed a little weird, usually he was johnny on the spot to pick it up.... All the sudden this middle aged guy & lady show up, with a real well dressed guy & lady with them.... I get paged down there, as I roll up to the counter, the SM was already talking to them, they want the car.... Which I'm thinking, it's not your car, what is this all about...????? But I shut my trap for once, and sure enough, the sharp dressed people are these people's Lawyers, their Attorneys, right? So they break out the title to the car, which actually was in his girlfriend's name.... she bought him the car. Then a death certificate for the girlfriend. Power of attorney paperwork.... New title in this other lady's name...... So while they're hashing this out, I went to another desk, got the guy's number, and called him... I will say, he was 100% honest.... I was like hey man, these people are here to pick up your car.... He says yeah, give it to them. My girlfriend bought me that car, it's in her name, and she passed away, and her family hates me, so yeah, it's her Sister's car now.... I offered to buy it, no dice. So yeah, they kicked me out of her house, and they're taking her cars & her stuff..... so I'm out of the picture, good luck. And he hangs up.
    So that was wild, I never saw anything like that before... Like I say, you deal with the public long enough, you'll see it all....

    Taryl, you did right, of course. The other way around is what happened to me as a customer when I brought my Husqvarna auto mower for a warranty repair the year I bought it and couldn’t use it because the shop owner didn’t fix it. I talked to him personally because I only got answers on my calls by a lady assistant who could only excuse but didn’t have any answers for me. You are a good guy and good and honest work has to be paid. Greetings from Germany and I see you next Sunday. 👍🌞🍀

    I just had 4 pieces of equipment dropped off. 2 needed fuel lines which I charge $25 each with carb kit, and another for bearings seals and piston ring. Customer blew up over the repair bill AFTER he agreed to $25 each plus parts. The bearings and seals cost me $45 on the one item, I tore a machine apart for a used piston ring to get him going. The bill is currently $120 for 3 items IN RUNNING CONDITION. I had a feeling this guy was off so I rolled tape on the dismantle and pointed out the issues. The one item I did not fix was a parts machine. I needed the flywheel for one of the gas line jobs which had sheared AND I SWAPPED OUT FREE.
    People are complete assholes sometimes.

    Here in Connecticut...what you described is exactly correct on disposing a piece of unpaid equipment...EXCEPT.... it is auctioned to the highest bidder...and seller has a right to refuse the highest bid...if it does not meet what is owed..and if that item sells for more than was owed to the shop...the difference MUST be given to the original owner who brought it to the shop for repairs.

    We do the same thing. Indicate on the work order the work completion date, customer notification date and results of the call (spoke with customer, left message, mail box full, etc). We make four attempts to contact the customer over the course of 30 days. We have signs posted of our procedure about equipment left after repairs are completed. We charge $30.00 a day storage and after the accumulated storage fee exceeds the cost of a new piece of equipment we sell the equipment and keep all proceeds. That way if we are ever taken to court, we will gladly buy the customer a new machine if they pay the storage fee. You did the right thing and went out of your way to satisfy the customer - good for you.

    My shop here in Missouri (we fix electronics) we do a work order much like most shops do but at the end of the work order right under the line they sign for the repairs it states that if the unit is not picked up after 30 days we will sale it for work and parts. After that 30 days we will call 3 time and make note on what day and time with, did you leave a message, no answer, number no longer in service, Ext. We hold on to it for another 30 days. Then we sell it.
    I had one customer come in one day looking for his device. He made it out he dropped it off not to long ago. It took us a few days to find the work order, (we keep all work orders for 1 year and then they go in to storage) it turned out he dropped it off just over 2 years ago. We notified him we no longer have his device, the parts was removed and it was scrapped out. He explained that he got locked up for the 2 years and he was hoping we still had it. Sorry Nope.

      We fixed a lot of stuff that went over the 50% rule. Eventually sold those beauties (in the eye of the beholder) for less than the repair bill that they didn't pick up. The $20 deposit didn't ease the pain much.
