Word of advise for anyone who builds stuff from IKEA:
Their stuff is really not that bad but you need to know how to handle it. The construction by itself
is relatively sturdy but can be improved by use of proper wood glue at some key places such as
screws drilling directly into wood, on any tongue and groove connection, on the wood dowels and
especially on that flimsy drawer bottoms.
The latter ones usually don't break due to heavy load but because they get loose over time and slip
out of their groves, loosing their structural support. The glue prevents that.
I had some of my IKEA stuff for >20 years and never had any mayor issues with it.

In comparison to Amish furniture and my other options, their stuff is bottom tier.
I have gotten better shelves from hardware stores assembled from nothing but some basic metal supports and particle boards-and they still function without fault like the day assembled them.

@Leslie Dugger This. I have this exact same drawer from Ikea, but I used wood glue at the joints and inserts. It's a cheap piece of Ikea crap, but it's still in perfect working order.

I have several pieces of this Ikea collection. All I can say is, he's missing the metal support brackets that are supposed to go under each drawer. I would imagine a lot of people not installing those because it seems like an extra step but this is the result.
Honestly, I feel like I could listen to James talk about Siberian geography and it would still be interesting, his way of speaking is eternally engaging no matter the topic.

This drawer sucks. Drawer 1 and 3 were great, classic wooden drawers, but for drawer type *MALM,* the IKEA designers obviously were not thinking straight.

It's literally the cheapest dresser money can buy. You get what you pay for. There was re-design specifical for these drawers. Ikea added a metal support bar across the underside of the drawers. It prevents the bottom of the drawer from bowing. It works.

I work for ikea and I can attest to this.
Kuma I used to go to Ikea about a year or so ago in Paramus, NJ.
I've had that drawer for 10 years... it got mold from humidity damage. Burnt it off. The in between wood broke just like yours, had to repair all of them. Still alive tho! Had to reinforce the inner drawers too so they don't sink...

The problem with the Ikea stuff is that you have to buy the more expensive furniture if you want it to last. The cheap stuff falls apart quick. I once bought a dresser for 70$ and it was a pile of junk. I returned it and opted for a more expensive dresser that was around 200$, this one is still going strong and it looks really nice too.

@@d.n.3652 That isn't even plywood. It is called "particle board." That is just sawdust and glue pressed together. It is designed to be super cheep. Plywood has actual slices of wood glued together and is a bit more durable. Hell, OSB is probably stronger than particle board and that is just woodchips and glue.

@Truth Projection Sorta. TL;DR Quality lumber isn't as plentiful and easy to manufacture as sawdust and glue.
More in depth; lumber isn't that expensive. The biggest thing is that particle board can be molded and shaped MUCH easier than lumber and when you use particle board for things like drawers you have to put "veneer" over it or just paint. You don't normally see the exposed particle board.

I have this exact same Ikea cabinet, and they started bending/collapsing at the back just like yours. It got really bad within 3 years, so my grandpa decided to reinforce the bottoms with two thin wood planks for extra support. They now function better than new.
