Jason W. Morningwood Just like "The calipers are painted red, the same color as fire trucks so i'm guessing they have good cooling." :D Stuff like that mixed in with the serious engineering tone is pretty funny xD
The power is great. But I hate driving in a straight line. This car handles and is agile. It's not about drag racing it's about attacking corners and enjoying your daily driving. I love my car, it's perdect for me. Especially when it's 25 bucks at the pump and I can enjoy my drive everywhere. Horsepower is over rated. Trust me, this car might have less horsepower than other sports cars, but horsepower is only one small aspect of driving.
+SoulCharter would you say this car is for a first time car owner? I don't really care about power at the moment, just want a practical car that handles good.
+RD Pnoy I dont know bud. To be honest, it handles extremely well. You could get yourself into a lot of trouble. You do not want to get in an accident, but this car begs to be pushed. Self control is a huge concern. But its a great car to work on and great car to drive.
easily the best reviewer on youtube, hands down. It's a shame you don't have the funding for your own personal track(s), but at least your reviews are realistic and show what the average person is likely to be exposed to.
+Peter Schmidt Agreed. Redline reviews is a pretty close 2nd imo but they don't go as in detail about the technical and engineering of the cars as this guy.
+Peter Schmidt he has 600k subs and doesn't have a staff. He most definitely could afford a membership to a track. He's just extremely frugal (being an engineering student probably has something to do with it. I don't blame him he knows what his audience likes and what got him to this point so kudos to him.
You've been consistently making some of the very best car reviews on the market! Awesome attitude + super informative on technical aspects. Very refreshing to see your well educated car enthusiasm, while still being humble in this era of ridiculously pumped up egos on much of today's social media and car culture. Last year i bought a 2020 Subaru tS and just a couple days ago I replaced a family car and bought (was lucky to find while i serviced the BRZ) a 2018 Subaru Impreza Limited - both cars seem amazing for different reasons; many of which you eloquently describe on the reviews you've made on BRZ and Impreza. I also watch your reviews on other car tech which you explain well, while keeping it fun, interesting and relatively easy to understand. Thanks once again!
Adam Hall Haha, it's the car for folks without an ego. You're not going to win any red light races, your friends will all tell you it's underpowered, but what a fun car to thrash in some curvy roads. Light weight cars are just fun; though so are longitudinal g forces. :)
The cup holder was wrong thats why it moved. If you flip it to the little large hole to put your phone pointing toward you it would hold! I have a brz too great review men. I learned a lot of you with your old reviews in how engine works👌 in 3 months thinking about an sti great work men
The cup holder is supposed to be facing the other way for it to be fully secured. The pins onto which it latches to are of different size on either side of the passenger compartment, which prevent you from putting it in the opposite direction.
Very nice review and you really got the point of the car. The handling is just outstanding. Although I hate the Primacy HP Prius tires on it. Yeah, sliding a little on dry roads is fun but in the wet they are a pain to drive. I've put on 225/40/18 Continental Sportcontact 5 on my GT86 and got a little camber adjustment on the front and I enjoy driving it like that way more then before. Just gives some extra confidence and if you really want to you could still move it sideways. Never gonna regret buying my GT86.
im 4 years late but i just got the 2015 and im so glad you mentioned the clutch feeling like that. i was over here thinking i was driving my car wrong, but turns out the clunky-ness is a common thing and to have it confirmed by you is such a reliefff! i honestly hate how clunky it is!
Great video! You are very knowledgeable about every detail of this car. I'm currently in the market for a 2016 model, and as a novice car enthusiast (I know that phrase is an oxymoron), I appreciate this detailed review. Thumb's up!
Part of the noise is from the Prius tires- the michelins that came on my parent's Prius were very loud, but as soon as I put Blizzak ws80s on it the noise instantly reduced.
I've watched other car review videos and by the time the video is half way through I'm bored out my mind. Other videos tend to miss information you want to know about while others repeat the same thing over and over for 20 minutes. Your reviews are spot on, entertaining, and informative, I even watch videos you post up for cars I don't care for. Along with your other videos explaining specific hardware such as shocks, differentials, and so forth, this is a fantastic channel. With that said, would you be able to get your hands on the 2015 (or 14) Audi Q5 Turbo Diesel? As well as the Q7 with the same setup? I know you can't pick and choose at the moment but if you can get a hold of either or both that would be awesome. Thanks.
Jun Thanks for your kind words and feedback! I'm working on my relationship with Audi. It's a bit more complicated than some of the other relationships, but I hope to get them in eventually!
All the car stuff aside, since, really, I can't say anything about the BRZ that hasn't been said before---the area you live in seems extremely gorgeous. Lots of greenery and very little sprawl. My envy is palpable.
man this video really made me to go for subaru brz insted of volexwagon gti, it seems really fun driving this car especially in manual gear. thanks for this video my friend.
Sounds like a good daily driver, I have been wondering if this car was going to be good or not, I'm happy Subaru has done right, RWD manual, and 2 doors, 👌🏻
I don't think the car needs any more power, but I think it does need more torque down low -- though with a high-revving engine, obviously more torque means much more power. So from that perspective it should have more power, but that's not the end of it. I would say Roots blowers like the Cosworth and Innovate Motorsports kits fit this car like a glove. They don't make super insane amounts of power, but they do give it just the kick it needs. And the best part is that this is also the best cheap chassis for making super insane amounts of power since the 240sx -- possibly the best ever. It's rigid, it's light, it's aerodynamic, it's got a really solid engine that can withstand a lot of forced induction, and it's got a nice long wheelbase. AND, it's the only long-wheelbase car under 3k pounds ever built to modern NHSA safety standards (that isn't a one-off worth hundreds of thousands of dollars).
I would just say that you can carry people in the back for short journeys, especially if they are under 6ft, I've done it many times before. Also the gear change is only notchy when cold, once it warms up it's really nice to use. Other than that great review :)
If you turn the center drinks holder 180 degrees, it'll slot itself securely, because of unequal size tabs/sockets on each side. Basically, that pocket that looks like something designed specifically for an iPhone should be on the driver's side.
I love your channel, great reviews! Btw, I know they are getting old but do you think you could review a Honda S2000? Because you are the most technical car reviewer on TH-cam and I think it would be great to get an explanation about the S2000. Congrats on your channel!
Thanks for all your videos, really really entertaining and 'educational'. Seriously one of the best car channel on TH-cam. I just have a critics. Since you audience is worlwide spead, why don't mention even the metric system?
Nice review. My current daily driver is a 14 WRX. If I was financially able to, I always thought this car just as is would be a perfect 2nd vehicle. -JB
NOT BASICALLY 2-SEATER! I have an FR-S and we roll 3 deep regularly, occasionally for multiple hours. 3 average sized Americans. Yes, the third wheel does have to sit on the passenger side in back, put their feet under the seat, and let the front passenger back up as far as is comfortable. Yes the front passenger has enough leg room, but they'd probably both be completely mangled in a wreck. We've on several occasions managed to get four people in the car, but it requires flexibility--read severe risk of torn pants--since I'm not willing to compromise my driving position. No I don't recommend above average sized people or anyone who's over the hump buy the car expecting that capability. inb4 this is a BRZ review: it's almost exactly the same car. Engineering Explained has a video detailing the extremely subtle differences between the two. The interior size and layout is not changed in any aspect that would effect my point. The FR-S seats also back all the way up; they won't even go to a lounge position when backed up.
tidbit about the cup holders - in my 2015 limited 6MT you need to flip it so that the long slot is adjacent to the driver, not the passenger. then it fits perfectly in either the forward or the rear position.
Series blue seems pointless really, and makes the car look ricey IMO... Btw, this is the best review of the BRZ on YT! I love your channel! Btw, it would be awesome if you could compare it to the 370z, I think they're surprisingly comparative!
Hey man you should up your production value by getting someone to film the outside of the car by driving along, beside, or in front of you with various go pros to capture different angles. Also you should have some go pros hooked up to the outside of the vehicle. I know go pros aren't cheap but maybe do a kick starter or something or think of it as an investment. And it doesn't have to be go pros I just don't know of very many cameras. I know motortrend does this and heck you could maybe even buy like a quad copter for aerial views. Just some suggestions.
Do we really just want to be looking at the interior and his face the whole video? The video is about the car not his face... So in order to better showcase it angles such as those would be a godsend. Plus if it was just fluff why the heck would literally every single review on cars implement said methodology of filming. People are drawn to changing scenery and are often bored by the same shot of him so in retrospect this seems like an obvious choice to increase his popularity.
Frank Sang I agree it could certainly be more aesthetic. I make do with the equipment I have, and more importantly, the amount of time I can devote. The future is always unknown, things can certainly improve with time (as they should), but for now the system seems to work well without hindering my low budget, limited resources, and limited time. Thanks for your feedback! My face certainly isn't the best thing to look at.
There's actually a power socket in the glove box. Almost impossible to notice. Took me a few months before I saw it. Keep up the good work though, really enjoying your videos ;)
Just wanna say thank you so much for reviewing my dream car. Absolutely love your channel Ive watched your videos since your dimly lit little white boards ones lol. Gotta say the best part is just reading through the comments at the people who don't get the Jokes. Its got me weak.... L...O....L Tahnks again!
Great video, I love that car!! One thing I would like you do when you test cars is not trust what they said about MPG, they tend to be "optimistic" about it and maybe you use it as a reference, but do it manually to get real MPG (do the math)
I'm 6"0, and I can tell you now that I do not fit in the back of this car. My head touches the roof and I have little-to-no leg room (with a small person in the seat in front of me). Not ideal for more than 2 people, but this is still a fantastic car!
I have a BRZ I love it, would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable sports car. I just wish it had a little bit more power, about 240 or 250 hp. Then it would be perfect
38mpg?? what the heck. I just picked up a '17 brz series yellow. i've been getting 20/23 avg combined with some 30 miles of highways for my daily commute :/ i'm hoping it gets better. possibly a break in thing?
my 2017 impreza was terrible on fuel economy in the first 6000km, then at 10000KM it got to official rated fuel numbers or better. I regret not buying the yellow BRZ that spring, only boring colors now :( , central Alberta has terrible winters, and love to ski too
Love the car reviews and engineering videos you put out. One of my go to TH-cam channels. I used to live in Corbett. I need to take a drive down the scenic highway soon. My wife and I are the caretakers at Eagle Fern park in Eagle Creek feel free to come out and film one of your reviews out here. Thanks Victor
+Engineering Explained On the subject of the transmission, I ONE HUNDRED percent agree with the decision to go manual but I test drove an FR-S today with the tiptronic shifter (thats all they had on the lot) and I was extremely surprised at the precision and quickness that the gearbox is able to shift with. My takeaway was that if someone can't or doesn't want to learn how to drive stick, they will still have 98% of the experience that the manual can give.
''You can switch between MPH and km/h if you want to improve your 0-60 times"
I love the random humour nonchalantly scattered throughout the video :D
Jason W. Morningwood Just like "The calipers are painted red, the same color as fire trucks so i'm guessing they have good cooling." :D
Stuff like that mixed in with the serious engineering tone is pretty funny xD
Jason W. Morningwood haha yeah he throws some clever jokes every now and then
and he says that the sport mode keeps you in your intended path, but what if someone's intended path was a tree?
" You can also switch between kmh and mph if you want to improve your 0-60 time." Hahaha, nice. I laughed.
Man... You reviewed the he'll out this car! I have never seen a review so thorough.
For real!!
I bought a brz a year ago, I haven't stopped loving it. I get excited every day when I get into my car. Money well spent.
Do u feel that there's any lack of power?
And are the back seats really that small you think?
Thinking about this as my first car
The power is great. But I hate driving in a straight line. This car handles and is agile. It's not about drag racing it's about attacking corners and enjoying your daily driving. I love my car, it's perdect for me. Especially when it's 25 bucks at the pump and I can enjoy my drive everywhere. Horsepower is over rated. Mind bogglingly in depth review of an enthusiast's perfect car! What more can you ask for? Keep up the awesome work, Jason!

Love your show!
Watching this guy had me smiling. He had so much fun with the review. One of the best blokes I've seen do a review
I've come to appreciate the subtle/not so subtle bits of sarcasm in your videos
that middle compartment is for a nitrous bottle

Love the review!

I don't think the car needs any more power, but I think it does need more torque down low -- though with a high-revving engine, obviously more torque means much more power. So from that perspective it should have more power, but that's not the end of it.

Top notch car review. Informative and to the point

The cup holder only wobbles at 7:38 because you have to flip the slot side towards the driver. It will then be secured.
I love the highway pulls. Best part
For those 6.5 seconds, I'm free...
Finally, get your opinion on my new car :)
i think a great car to review would be the Ralliart. A comparison with the wrx would be pretty cool to see!

+Smerdzy most 2+2 coupe's simply have a back seat for insurance purposes, rear seats are as they have always been: room for kids when necessary
+DevasionX I know... That's irrelevant to this video. I was stating how the back seats are almost unusable.
I never heard of that red firetruck color having an effect on cooling but it is good to wonder and question things.
Occasional sarcasm.
oohhhhhhh...LOL
I have a BRZ I love it, would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable sports car. I just wish it had a little bit more power, about 240 or 250 hp. Then it would be perfect
Why don't you place the camera closer to the interior pieces while you explain?
A little late here, but amazing review, man.
38mpg?? what the heck.

I used to live in Corbett. I need to take a drive down the scenic highway soon.
My wife and I are the caretakers at Eagle Fern park in Eagle Creek feel free to come out and film one of your reviews out here.
Thanks
Victor
excellent brief I have ever seen in youtube about any subaru best from Chalkedon..
Doesnt have a glove box release button though
Srivats Pelapur You're absolutely right. Tremendous disappointment.
Great Review , Keep it up ! Seems like you like Subaru alot ! :D
It's funny seeing a Subaru with the Toyota cruise control stock hanging from the steering wheel.
Can you make a video about how throttle blipping/heel-to-toe in terms of what it does and how it affects your car. Thanks as always.
I'm going to be that guy, it should have been higher gear ratio in the auto not lower. Just sayin. Great review by the way!! Keep 'em coming!!!
Hi, on your commentary of clutch portion, I don't quite understand. Can you explain more? What difference between BRZ and WRX? Thanks.
Planning to get this baby!
Have you ridden in a newer 2nd gen? Particularly curious how you feel about the power boost.
thats a great trick switching it from mph to kmph to improve 0-60 time.. wonder how much faster it will improve ur 1/4mile time?
I really want the brz series blue! When I get it I will supercharge it 😍
red calipers..lolz..kewl vid..ill keep my wrx but a nice car...kinda weird no turbo? any idea why?
It shows in the winter here. Do you think this car would make a good daily ?
I know it’s a broad question but what’s your opinion on buying a “salvaged title” BRZ from a dealer? And any tips if decided to buy
i wish more of the interior was blue, like blue led's in the cluster and console. the materials seem nice though.
Great review as always. Any chance you could get your hands on 2016 Acura ILX? I heard good things about that car.
