    I'm a bit late to the party but the keyless entry thing can be changed. Hold the lock and unlock buttons on your key for about 15 seconds and you'll hear a beep, then both doors will unlock with the touch of the handle.

      Exoticars19 Pretty funny, I nearly took my Scirocco into the garage when this started happening recently. This was after my fuel flap release had stopped working so I was thinking all the locks must be shit! Then I remembered that while checking my fuel flap lock the mechanic had reset the door lock convenience settings and found that locking passengers out is the standard setup :/

    The door locking is to protect you from a random person jumping in your car as you're getting in and car jacking/kidnapping/robbing you. If you go to the passenger side and try to reach for the door, it should unlock both doors

  • @kens97sto171
    @kens97sto171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    the door unlock behaviour is to prevent you being carjacked.
    with a regular keyless entry, you press unlock once to open driver door, and twice for passenger door.
    with the keyless go, smart key, it's opening the driver door only on purpose.
    just use your keybfob, and hit unlock 2x if you have a passenger.
    second gear issue sounds like synchronized issue, it should not do that.
    youb could try double clutching to get into gear.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kens97sto171 I agree with everything except the last part. He's not driving i truck to have to double clutch lol. But he can fix that with a Transmission oil change. It's actually a solution that fixes grinding issue on many different cars. I think the Ford turbo hatches also had this problem that got fixed by changing the trans oil.

    • @kenriley3746
      @kenriley3746 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SI0AX I said TRY double clutching.. I also said it should NOT do that, if double clutching works, it could help indicate the trouble... trans fluid change would be an obvious thing to try too. But if you CANT get it into gear while moving.. I doubt its just a fluid issue... difficult to go in.. possibly. I would think when fluid is hot it would work ok regardless... also if it was just fluid.. why only 1st and 2nd gear? if it was a fluid synchro mismatch I would think it would effect all the gears. Or at least they would all be stiff.. not impossible, and perfect.. depending on gear.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken Riley
      Yeah, changing the fluid is probably the most overlooked solution. I'm pretty sure there are cars that never go a fluid change their whole lifespan.

    • @cradleofgoth
      @cradleofgoth 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kens97sto171 Transmission problem is due to the fluid for sure.

    • @TexasRevving
      @TexasRevving  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't really speak for the is350 f sport as I haven't driven one but the two seem like quite different cars with different purposes. The Lexus would certainly make for a more daily-drivable car but the BRZ is a lot of fun if you put up with it.

    For downshifting into 2nd, try double-clutching:
    0. Currently driving in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th (hopefully not too fast!).
    1. Put the gear in neutral.
    2. Let go of the clutch.
    3. Rev! This causes the transmission-side of the clutch to spin. Important: Clutch must be engaged (i.e. clutch pedal in up position). If clutch is disengaged, you'll just be revving the engine-side of the clutch (flywheel), which won't help you with the down shifting.
    4. Press the clutch and quickly shift into 2nd. You should probably release the accelerator at this time too, but it's not necessary as engine side speed won't have anything to do with gear engagement at this point since clutch is depressed. So feel free to rev-match using the accelerator.
    People talk about rev-matching all the time, but most of the time, they're only talking about matching engine speed to wheel speed at corresponding gear position. That does nothing to help with the shifting. It does help with smoothness when you're letting go of the clutch pedal, but that's after you've already shifted. To help with gear shifting, you need to match the wheel-side gear speed with the transmission-side clutch speed. The only way to control that yourself is with gear in neutral and clutch engaged (i.e. clutch pedal in up position).
    It's really the synchronizer's job to force the transmission-side clutch to speed up or slow down to match the wheel-side gear, but sometimes, it needs a little help.

    I also have a Series.Blue, love it! By the way, the keyless not unlocking both doors is an anti carjacking protection. Lots of carjackings happen with somebody waiting on the other side of your car while you approach it in a parking lot and an automatic unlock of that side would just be too big a risk apparently. Same reason why the passenger door won't unlock from the outside touch panel if the driver's door is already open.

    The reason that both doors do not open at once is that it is supposed to act as an anti theft feature, if you are going to get into your car and both doors unlock someone unwanted may be able to slip their way into the car which most people don't really want to deal with. It is just like if you have a car without keyless entry, and you click the button to unlock only clicking it once will unlock the drivers door but not the rest of the doors.

  • @AlexCr0ss
    @AlexCr0ss 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Dude, about the keyless entry, you can change it to unlock both doors. If you hold down the lock button and the panic button simultaneously while the car is off and the driver door is open, both doors will now unlock when you touch the inside of the driver side door. Hold the buttons for a few seconds and the car will beep. Then it's set.

    Just a thought, I drove one briefly and the issue I had with it was the crazy low torque, not the horse power. I drive a 200HP car with similar weight to the BRZ, and the lack of oomph from acceleration was really noticeable.
    Yeah, the car feels good, it's low and feels sporty. But, so is the 15 year old car I already have. I need more than "yeah but it's new" to spend $30k.
    More details if ya care:
    I drive a 99 Integra GSR with a JDM GSR motor and a Type R tranny for the LSD. It also has a comptech cold air intake, DC Sport exhaust manifold, Greddy SP2 cat-back exhaust, also most of the suspension has been upgraded to Type R. I haven't dyno'd the car but a modest estimate would put the HP at about 205 if you don't take into consideration HP loss over time (the JDM engine produces 10 more, each of the bolt ons claim 10-15 HP gain, the USDM engine starts at about 180HP, and the JDM versions starts at about 190HP -- an issue of sport compact car from 10 years ago used the 1999 integra gsr and a dyno and used my model exhaust, my model exhaust manifold, and the AEM cold air intake and got 195 combined (the AEM has a great name but for that engine it was basically a slightly longer short ram, the comptech actually pulls air from the wheel well)). The weight of the car is roughly 2,600lbs give or take some amps and speakers.
    I got the car in about 2001 and slowly made modifications over the years. Now the car is starting to feel pretty old and I'm in the market for something new. I test drove a bunch of cars and the Scion FRS was one I was eager to look at. After the test drive I set aside any notion of getting an FRS or BRZ entirely. I can't imagine paying about $30k for a car that is slower than my 15 year old car with a couple simple bolt ons. The tail wagging of the FRS was fun, but I can initiate inertial drifts in my integra pretty easily for the fun occasional feeling of the back end sliding out. $30k is a whole, WHOLE lot to spend on a car that is, at best, readily comparable to what I already have. If the FRS/BRZ came with a fully modern tech package that would be something, but it's a pretty barebones tech offering.
    But, if I'm willing to throw mods onto the integra to make it faster, why not plan to do the same with the FRS/BRZ? The Integra was already very well established and there were tuners everywhere that specialized in them. The FRS/BRZ has only been out a short time and there isn't nearly the same amount of aftermarket support. Also, the dealership I bought the car from installed the bolt ons to the stock car and continued to honor the warranty, I wouldn't get the same thing with a FRS/BRZ, and I didn't change out the engine and tranny until after the warranty expired (I sold my perfectly good engine and tranny to the race shop that specialized in engine swaps, and the exchange, plus the suspension mods ended up being less than $2k). All of this leaves me with a 15 year old car I bought for about 24k and modified for about 4k (ignoring stereo), being compared to a car that sells for about 30k.
    All that said, the basic lack of feeling of being pushed back into my seat when I accelerate was really difficult to deal with. The car REALLY felt a lot slower. Same basic amount of HP, but a noticeable change in torque. I expected more.

      +nallen100 The lateral g's are worse on purpose with stock tires to evoke a feeling of drift at low speeds. Put some sticky rubber on it and they go up tremendously. Do some research on that, honestly. Both the 98 camaro and the 95 miata have a ton of understeer on entry as well as ridiculous body roll. They are super fun cars, as well so no beef with the 2 mentioned cars ... , but finding a 90's miata that hasn't been beaten to death by a kid and completely rusted over might be a little tough, more of a toy.

      Lollll Edmonds is your sports car reviewer of choice! I don't believe I have to continue!
      Ever heard of Jeremy Clarkson? Chris Harris? Is there anyone in the well respected circle of automotive journalists that agrees with your ridiculous point of view?
      Sales of Lotus cars have been in freefall for a long time, does that make them bad cars?
      Would Ryan Tuerk be using the car as his drift car if it had a bad chassis? Would there be videos comparing a turbo GT86 with a Mclaren MP4-12C? Oh wait, no those guys must just be idiots, and you're the smart one... nevermind.

    About the downshifting being difficult, try double clutching to 2nd and see if it's easier. If the car has some syncro issues then it should go in like butter. Lot's of cars have weak syncros that quickly wear away from use, so double clutching not only prolongs their life, but can aid downshifting smoothness. Anyway, I like your videos!

But my other half can't drive it because the shifter is so notchy it hurts her shoulder, so you're right on there. I have the Premium, and the standard remote locks work fine - push the button once to unlock the driver's door, twice to unlock both.

    about shifting, i think it's the synchroniser's problem. for example downshifting to 2nd, i found rev-matching before go into 2nd helps (AKA, clutch in - gas - 3to2 - clutch out), or try double clutching. i think the same is happening on upshift as well - it's just being very picky on rev-matching

      Yiyang BAO I have a 2013 BRZ limited (USA) and have never experienced that problem. It's actually one of the funnest things to do in the BRZ, shift from 5th to 2nd gear that is :) Universally it's not recommended to shift into 1st from a higher gear because of gear ratios, unless your going under ~10mph.
      I do though have an issue where I'll be shifting up and I hit the next gear's "wall" while shifting even when the clutch is disengaged.

    • @monsterous289
      @monsterous289 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tandem Drifter Just don't rev over the red-line. Also, match the revs while downshifting. If the speed you are traveling will result in the lower gear revving over the redline, speed down before you do so.
      Also, the top 5% of the rev scale usually results in a slight decrease in the torque/hp.
      Manual gearboxes on sports cars are usually really tough. Just take a look at the stock Supra transmission that people leave on when they inert 1000+ hp engines.
      Also, I found I could shift very smoothly by sitting nearly upright (maybe 105 deg) and making a 90 deg angle with my clutch leg
      and with my clutch leg hovering above the clutch pedal helped immensely

    #4 can be fixed easily by opening drivers door and pressing both lock and panic button for 5 seconds. You will hear a beep that it worked and from there everytime you touch the handle both driver and passnger door will unlock.
    #8 I dont agree it's hard to downshift from 3 to 2. I do it all the time for every right turns because I want the power to be at 2nd by the time I complete the turn and just pull away. All you do is while on 3rd press brakes until your at 2.5k rpm, heel toe and rev match up to 3.5k rpm then downshift to 2nd. It's quite smooth. If you really want it even smoother, while on 3rd go down to 2k rpm, heel toe/revmatch up 3k rpm and downshift to 2nd. Smooth as butter and u get to pull away after you finish that turn. This car is sooo fun.

    Got my 2014 BRZ Limited last year and I absolutely love it!!! I totally agree with what you said. The first thing that happened on mine was the snap on the seat belt strap broke off within the first week. After two weeks of ownership, the passenger side DRL started to have condensation problems. Maybe a month in, I started hearing the crickets. The transmission was also very picky (especially in 1st and 2nd) and I had to readapt my shifting. During the winter months (or whenever it gets cold) the clutch makes this weird horn like sound when disengaging at around 4000 RPM. The paint is also extremely thin and my front bumper looks like it got blasted by a shotgun a couple times. It's true that there's always something making noise in the cabin. For the most part, mine comes from the rear deck lid. But all in all, these are just minor inconveniences and don't take away from the experience of driving an FR-S or BRZ.

    Number 4 can be considered a safety feature. Let's say you have a young lady approaching her car in dark parking garage, if the car completely unlocks on her there is an opportunity for an unwanted passenger to get in. By only allowing the driver side door to unlock the cabin is more secure during that window of time. I remember this being advertised with the original remote entry systems (still pretty standard), it's why when you press the unlock button once on those systems it only unlocked the driver's door, and you have to press it twice to unlock the entire car.

    one positive with the Toyota injection + direct injection that is missed by most people is that the BRZ motor has secondary injectors that will prevent coking exhibited as a huge problem on cars like the MINI Cooper S and other DI cars. All other manufacturers should learn this from Toyota, as the problem doesn't exhibit itself quickly but instead it gradually saps your power over the years. Our MINI burned a valve at 90K and the intake runners and intake valves were a horrendous mess of burned oil buildup that was killing power the whole time.

    Why have you had 2 BRZs?
    I bought a manual "Monogram" FR-S and after a few months, traded it at Carmax for an auto. Why? SoCal traffic was a bother in a 6-speed. I've had 5-speeds, and the ratios are wide enough to allow staying in 1st or 2nd a lot longer.
    Anyway, I have two possible solutions for 2 of your problems:
    1. Crickets: It's the fuel pump. I had it replaced under warranty. After about 3k miles, it's starting to chirp again occasionally, but I now have the problem registered & they'll keep replacing it if/as necessary.
    2. Noises: I hear them as faint rattles. Under warranty, they replaced the rear seat latches, which accounted for most of it. Again, that's been a registered complaint, so when I brought it in again, they put shims somewhere (somewhat uncaring service rep didn't get details). It still lightly rattles back on the passenger side, so next time, I'll get them to look some more.
    I heard a different one the other day, but found it was the position someone left the front passenger seat. I tilted it at a stop light and it didn't make noise any more. Must've been some kind of sympathetic harmonic vibration.
    I love the handling, and it holds surprisingly more than a lot of cars, even w/o dropping the rear seat backs. I considered a Kia Soul for a while, 'til I saw the cargo area held about 1/2 of the FR-S's w/o folding the Soul's seats.
    Yet, I am looking at a GTI now. Faster, yes, but still doesn't handle like that FR-S. Also takes premium and gets worse mileage... I think.

    One thing I would like to add to this list is the fact that the rear seats are almost completely pointless. Almost no-one that is over 5 years old and has legs can sit there. I look at it as more of an extended trunk space.

    Ha, your "straight out of a scooter" comment made me laugh out loud. Great video. I'm thinking about getting the BRZ and this has only swayed me more toward getting one. Thanks!

    I put an upgraded trans oil (Motul or Amsol) which calmed down those occasional clunky shifting and noise issues.

    The windows levers also make noise. If you hear a rattle when driving or when your radio is playing, try placing your fingers gently on the levers. It's annoying.
