This video sure brings back a lot of memories for me ! June 65, after spending 4 years in the Navy, I finally took delivery of my fire engine red 65 GTO ragtop (white) with red interior, buckets, 389, tri power, 4 speed, 3.90 posi rear. Great car and I loved it but it turned out to be a cop magnet and I traded it in Dec 65 (got 3 speeding tickets in 4 1/2 months, beat the last one). Big mistake trading it. (sob). Didn't have it long enough to really enjoy it !
I actually have a 64 Pontiac GTO four speed , tri power. I have the original 389 but now I have a 455 in it with a 66 tri power. The 389 was a beast but the 455 is a wild ride. My GTO is a time machine. My wife says that car is so fast that if you are not careful it’s going to take you into another dimension and you will be back in the sixties.
i have a 64 tri pwr 4 speed too. I have to replace clutch so i was thinking of puting in a 340 hp 400 out of a 68 bonneville that i had. scared to blow up original motor and would like to drive it like i stole it! I think the 64 intake will only fit the 9770716 heads so i would need another intake. so, so much fun. btw my wife loves driving it but just on center carb lol
My father bought a 1965 GTO 389 Tri-Power 4 speed brand new in '65. He had a Bobcat kit installed on it. Awesome, awesome muscle car! I always loved the 3x2bbl carbs on these cars. I have to show my father this video. I'm going to email it to him, he'll love it. Thanks
@Wildest Cowboy Wow, I wrote that 9 years ago! I'm sure he does, but I'll have to ask him. He's 80 years old now and still going strong! His taste is still the same in cars that it was as a kid. I guess that never goes away. I'll definitely ask him when I call to say hello to my parents tomorrow.

As soon as I called the other day, he started telling me about how his next door neighbor found out for the first time that she had stage 4 pancreatic cancer a month ago, and that she just passed away at home with her family and a nurse staying over with her. BTW, 1964, the GTO was only a package option for the Pontiac Tempest Lemans. 1965, GTO became its own stand-alone model. Not only am I a 50+ years master factory certified auto/truck tech, I also have had a successful classic/vintage vehicles restoration business for nearly 35 years now. I've long lost count of how many true muscle cars I've restored or worked on. Matter of fact, I was working at a Pontiac dealership 1964-1969.

Man the distinct sound of a 65 gto! I high school buddys dad bought him an original one owner nightwatch blue 65 for $ 1500 back about 1977! It had never been abused, my buddy had a speed shop balance and blueprint the engine and he put a nice reed street cam in it! He drove that car for thirty years before parting with it, last we heard someone was supposedly restoring it! Just the exhaust sound is so distinctive even when gearing down!!! Ive owned four GTOs in my life time, it sure is enjoyable how they turn heads anyway you cruse down the street! You can see the I remember look on their faces!!!
have one today in nightwatch blue....had one new in 65 also in nighwatch blue..sold it in 68 and have cried every night since..And again have owned virtually every car made in the performance line in america and germany including mercedes jaguar bmw and none matched my original gto...the only car as a young man i could not wait to finish work and run to to drive ..and so i will leave this world with this car parked in my garage..

My buddy had the same car. I was probably 14 when I first rode in it. Think I drank so Sloe Gin or some shit like that & we raced a 455 Old's 7 miles to the next town. We were going at least 130mph & I was hanging out the window like an idiot. My buddy grabbed me with one hand while still driving & screamed "Get your ass back in here dammit!" I'll never forget it! lol. Loved that car. It was BAD ASS!

I remember Hot Rod matching one against a 1989 Turbo 6 Trans Am. Of course the TA won but the test was so slanted it was sickening. They allowed the TA's intercooler to be packed with dry ice. The owner of the GTO granny shifted at 5000 rpm. They had to run on 87 octane so he turned back the timing to stop the pinging. Lost 50 hp. And he had bias ply tires. He lost by only .7 of a second yet Hot Rod proclaimed it proved the superiority of new cars over old muscle cars.
3 carbs look cool but the same engine with a well tuned Quadrajet will always be quicker. Most factory tripower manifolds have lousy flow but the stock Pontiac spreadbore manifolds have excellent flow. So good that only a select few aftermarket performance manifolds can increase power.
Yes and no...I've had both, and I find that the tri-power had a bit more torque when needed. I like the idea of everything running off the middle carb, until you open up the outer ones...
A man that knows how to work on and build a good quadrant can make them badass, love the sound when the back barrels open up! There is something to be said about a tri power setup, that third carb kicking in is like damn where did that come from!!!
Beautiful car...I had a '66 GTO 4 spd!...I drive a lot of different cars,however these were not the first muscle cars! 1961 started the movement with the Pontiac Ventura,Chevy 409,Oldsmobile Starfire...In the 50's Oldsmobile was owning the track with it's Rocket 303 v8! Chrysler also was in the game.Badges and decals came along later in the mid 60's.I prefer anything pre 1970!...Again beautiful car and a great example of a great muscle car!...Awesome!!
I like the aggressive stance of the car, in the opening of the video. Believe me, when that picture appeared in other peoples rear-view mirror, they knew they were about to get their a$$ kicked. Even more obvious when the park lamps were moved up to the grille in 66.
Great car, I had one back in the late 60's. If there was a weakness in these cars, it was the rear end, they weren't that strong! But being a GM A-body, a 12-bolt rear from a Chevelle was bolt-in swap. Enough SS Chevelles were being wrecked at the time that the rears weren't that hard to come by. 8 3/4" Mopar B-body rears were another option although not bolt in because they had to bracketed to work with the A-body 4-link suspension....
@@nickmecca2024 GM 10 bolt, and 12 bolt rear differentials weren't very strong. I lost count, long ago, of how many Ford rear differentials that I put in GM vehicles.
I was winding mine out in third gear one night...somehow the rear U-bolts let loose and the driveshaft dropped out ass end first....bounced once and hit and cracked the Muncie....and didn't know what had happened...I thought the motor blew...but no...it was still running...so I coasted to a stop and had to walk back for the shaft....D'OH!

Those old cars had the power and tq. but lack what modern cars have which is the proper gearing to harness the power. A vintage 3 or 4 speed just can't efficiently maximize the power like a 6-10 spd modern manual or auto trans. today.

Put when it comes to muscle, The true tiger will show its strips. 87 octaine is not fair on a three double carb car. if anything, the 65' needed the ice more, just because modern radiators are better... Bias ply tires arent nice huh? Imagine if Delorene was able to close the deal with BF goodrich, he would of had street tires, 20 years before their time... I would love to pull up next to an 89 TA with my 66 GTO.
My 1964 lemon could incinerate the tires in 4th gear with big tires! You don't need more rpm's! You need way more horsepower! There is a way to burn a mild mixture of NITROMETHANOL in a street engine. I'm not going to tell you how Frank KETTLER told me how to do it!! HAAHAAAA!
can you roast second? i have a 67 Lemans with a stock 400 out of a 67 catalina station wagon with t400 and 373 and it roast second and churps 3rd all day long you should definitely take a video of just roasting every gear you can..... check out my videos

what is a muscle car...A muscle car is a big engine in an intermediate size body. That is why the 1964 pontiac GTO is the first original muscle car...

Beautiful sound. Love the chirps from the rear tires after the burn out as he kicks it into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Nothing beats a good 389 tri-power.

fredfindl, GM 12 bolt rear weren't great either and that's why several aftermarket companies made conversion kits for a Ford 9" rear differential.
