Time for a new sew with me! I've grown tired of trying to invent my own patterns even when I'm making something simple, and making lots of mistakes in the process... Time to learn how to sew from a pattern. Follow along in my first attempt, as I make a cute linnen summer playsuit.

A little unsolicited invisible zipper advice: I actually sew the seam up with a basting stitch and iron the seams open, Then I pin the zipper to the seam and will hand tack it in place so that I am not faffing around with the pins. Then top stitch the zipper in (so at this point the zipper is trapped underneath the seam and you can use your regular presser foot to stitch it in place). Then, rip the seam out (and the tacking/hand basted stitches from the zipper itself) and you have a perfectly placed zipper. This has the advantage of making sure that all seams and pattern pieces are matched up correctly as well.

Yes, the first thought I had when I saw her zipper was to recommend this OR hand-sewing. She hand-sewed it! :-) I find that hand-sewing is quick and actually quite sturdy if you use a backstitch.

This works well for a standard zipper but there's a blind zipper foot that's much easier to use. The key is to gently press open the curled coil of the zipper just a bit before applying it and it goes in great.

I use Wonder Tape instead of hand basting for zippers since it's faster. Wonder Tape is great because you can sew through it and it washes away in the first wash. It changed my zipper life so I like to share it with others. I do agree with you about basting and ironing the seam when the zipper will go. So helpful. :)

I’m not a jumpsuit kind of person (prefer ease of not getting mostly naked to go toilet) but it does look cute on you. Great strategy in elongating the crotch seam 👍
Thanks for clearing up about the missing pieces as I was confused about how you were meant to finish the neckline. I do agree it’s a bit high and a longer V shape would be even more flattering 👍
Tip with instructions: read everything first and then make up your mind which instructions you will follow or ignore (to do it your way), it helps plan ahead and hopefully avoid missing out on important info. I sometimes draw a square around the info that I know I shouldn’t forget. It usually helps, especially if you revisit the pattern after a long time 👍

My biggest recommendations is, as with baking or cooking, read the recipe/pattern/instructions fully through once or twice, if you feel like it you can put little marks yourself of 1 2 3 4 5 etc so you know when doing it that youre not skipping a section ^-^ that looked really nice tho🥰

A small interfacing tip, if you're ever unsure which side is the sticky side cut off a small piece of interfacing and sandwich it in a piece of scrap fabric and iron, will quickly show you which side is which without the potential for wasting longer pieces. Ive been using interfacing for years and still get the sides mixed up.

Little tip for pockets like those if do a edge stitch on the pocket lining will just help keep the pocket inside when goes thru the wash a couple times so don’t have to iron as much hope this might help in the future projects of your sewing journey!

Personally, I think I would put a small pleat along the sleeve to bring the „wings“ in at the edges for a neater silhouette, but obviouly that is my own preference.
I think you did really well, especially as it‘s a magazine pattern. The big name patterns usually give you clear instructions, I find. I don‘t have any experience with patterns you print off yourself, tho‘.
My daughter makes a lot of Ottobre patterns for herself and her children, I think they are Finnish but published in many languages, if you‘re interested.

Well done! It did seem a kinda odd pattern/instruction - like with the interfacing... in all the years of sewing mum, my sister and I have done, we've never come across anything where you attach the interfacing to the main item - it's usually attached to the facing (the pieces you missed cutting out, roughly the same size as the interfacing pieces) and then that is sewed to the main item. That's how we've always done the finishing for necklines and sleeveless armholes, etc.

I love watching your sewing videos, you did so well working from a pattern for the first time - your experience from draping meant you could puzzle out the fitting issues brava!
May I suggest some pattern companies that are a bit more friendly to use? I started to teach myself with 'Tilly and the Buttons' patterns , they have advice on cutting, photos to accompany instructions, easy to understand, and are way more accessible for all people new to patterns. They also have books that come with several patterns - good value for money. 'Closet Case' patterns are also very detailed, they don't use photos but the diagrams are good, they explain techniques and jargon and even have a very informative blog that gives so much info on fitting, adjustments, techniques - a real gold mine. And for more vintage-inspired but still modern patterns 'Sew Over It' is fabulous, they have a Facebook group to get help and they have been hosting sewalongs of their patterns during lockdown on their TH-cam channel.
Thanks for sharing your sewing adventures, can't wait for the next one!

There is a great website called The Fold Line that has almost anything you could ever want. They also have a TH-cam channel. Those patterns come with much better instructions!

  • @xfairfaeriex
    @xfairfaeriex 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nicely done, Lucy! I'm totally in the same boat as you about patterns. 😅 The main thing I noticed about the first sew through was that the pleats were facing inward to the crotch which I think really accentuated the area even more but it seems that you fixed that and faced the pleats outward towards the sides the second time around. My first thought for fixing the length issue was to create a wider waistband to add the length back in however I like your solution better. The final length of the garment works well on you. 👍

I know this is a bit late and has probably already been addressed, but 'cursive ribbon' is likely another term for bias tape. This is fabric cut on a 45 degree cross grain (the bias) and sewn into long strips. Bias tape is great because it can curve around almost any shape and can be used for binding arm holes, seam allowances, and basically anything that you want to have a nice, encased finish on. For arm holes and seam allowances, I prefer double fold, and for skirt hems, single fold. Definitely worth trying if you haven't yet.

Struggling with pattern fit is what got me into self drafting patterns, you do still need a mock up but it's way closer to your measurements. You'd think that working with commercial sewing patterns there will be less adapting but not at all, since they are usually made with "standard" measurements and hardly anyone is standard and you need to know a lot of pattern alteration techniques anyway. TDLR always make a mock up and end of rant xD

Mimi G has a good video you should watch on how to install an invisible zipper. You don't need a special zipper foot to do this. Also, it might help to read all the instructions before you start so you no what you need prior to starting.

The way to tell which is the sticky side of the interfacing is by touch - the sticky side is full of little bumps - kinda reminds you of those sticky dots you use to stick paper to things during cardmaking. The non sticky side always feels kinda soft - sort of like felt or wool.

My tips whn I copy the pattern on the pattern paper is I tape first the pattern then I make sure I place the pattern paper in a way it exceed the actual pattern on each side (when it's possible) and tape it too to secure everything. So you can draw without anything moving.

Congratulations on a fabulous finished garment!! I gave up on patterns after I realised my smallest measurement (back length) is a size 6 and my largest (hips) is a size 20!! By the time I've altered that I'm better off drafting my own! Did explain why I struggle to find off-the-rack clothes that fit properly though. When I install an invisible zipper, I sew the seam shut as if it would have no zipper at all, then align it very carefully and top stitch it in; then open the seam on top of the zipper back up. I know it's probably not how you're supposed to do it, but that's the way that I can get it the neatest!
Congrats again!!!! I hope you enjoy wearing it after all your hard work and perseverance!

if you're looking for a cheap pattern weight alternative, i recommend using those decorative glass pebbles or rocks that people use for vases and water features and whatever. you can get them from dollar stores/reject shops/poundland/whatever you call the cheap shop where you are. they're a little slippery but i find that useful as i can slide the rocks along the edge of the pattern to press it down when i'm tracing.

They come with detailed instructions with pictures and you don't have to trace the pattern onto other paper (unless you really want to). This project still turned out fairly well, but an envelope pattern would have saved you a lot of time and frustration.

It turned out so well! I agree, the neckline should be different. I'd go with either a deeper V or a boat neckline.

I need to learn how to sew! I could save so much money making my own clothes and could eventually make styles that suit my personal style.

Sewing never saves money, at least if you are used in shopping in regular fast fashion shops like I was. But it's so much fun

Hey Lucy. I just wanted to let you know. About the Egyptian hairstyle that you made, I feel people didn’t like what you did because it might be a form of racism. Not for your video, but the way people acted. I think they insulted you. I’m not asking to give me the video. I’m offended by what people thought about you. You could just remake the video instead of it being Egyptian or African. Some girls and women who were white skinned did their hair in cornrow braids like black people. The reason why people don’t like it is because of racism where some of them think one race is better than the other.
I am one of Jehovah’s witnesses and we know that all of us came from the first man and woman Adam and Eve. They are our first parents. Then, we were saved by Noah and his family from the great flood. The Bible says at the book of genesis that we are all descendants of Noah. That is when people started coming out in different skin colors. It also says at genesis that adam’s wife was named eve because she was to become the mother of everyone living. It says it in the Bible. When Noah’s sons had children, the whole world became full of people everywhere and they started speaking in different languages and scattered everywhere. They found places to live where their families grew and spoke the language that they speak and that is how the places got their names, like China, Europe, Italy, etc. people don’t know the truth about what god says in the Bible. Jehovah (god’s name) wants us to be happy and live together forever as a family.

Funny you talk about others sounding racist , but you sounds racist when you called them black people instead of their country's name of origin.

As a studied clothing technician I now wonder how you got to sew your own clothing (that looks decent on phone screen) with that lack of knowledge in how clothes are made
