To be honest, this is the first time I see the importance of the back button focus and explained well that I'm compelled to try it, thank you sir !! Along with a few other tips that I liked 😊
The action/override button is a great advice. I had set mine to be triggered using the focus button from the lenses. Also, instead of the -1.3 exposure, I set it to +0.3 but I also overrides the metering mode to highlight.
Thank you so much for this!!!! I’ve been watching videos non stop and this one was the most useful! I did have a question on what focus area did you use when catching those ospreys mid flight?
Good video. Some nice tips. My main issue at the moment is that the autofocus in my sony a7iv and sigma 100-400mm can't seem to ceep up with birds in flight. New to my camera so hoping i find some random setting causing it since my a6400 didn't have the issue... enjoy the time outside taking photos all!
@@ollenilssonen thank you for the great tips Olle! I especially loved the "action button", i can't count how many times i lost a good shot cause there was sudden fast movement and i wasn't prepared for it. The action button is a brilliant idea! 🤯
Really nice video and the action button is a really nice feature that I didnt know about! I don't agree with changing exposure compensation dial though, I think clicking the "joystick" is intuitive enough :D This is why being able to change settings to this degree of granularity is great though, these opinions are subjective and different for different usecases
Thanks for this video, just finishing figuring out the setup of my new camera. I'd love to know if you can tell me what I'm missing, or if it's a great idea, it's a combo from several youtubers and the manual's descriptions, plus some experimentation. I have two back buttons for focus: one for Tracking On + AF On, and the other for AF-On. ALL the focus zones I have available are NON-tracking because with the tracking + af button, they become tracking. And when I press AF-On, there's no tracking but it still has the same focus zone. Then I also have a toggle for Subject Ref On, and another to cycle through the subjects. So far this has worked great, but it's only been three weeks. After watching this video I will also make an Action button, and maybe another one for fully manual single shots. Thanks!
Hi Olle, I wanted to ask what lens would you recommend for wildlife i have a6400 and my budget is not best so cheaper the better :). Btw love ur videos u are such a inspiration
Hey, what place in sweden is the best for wildlife photography? I'm planning to spend a little more time in sweden and was wondering where to go. Can you give any tips? or you got any app or website where you can research like specificially wildlife sights and stuff? thanks in advance for taking your time. love your content. By far my favorite photographer on youtube! 🔥
If you engage back button focus on the Sony, how can you shoot BIF with your panic button (or with 1, 2,or 3 programmed for BIF)? Does the panic button override BBF/1,2,3? I have 1 preset for BIF on my A7R5 but find that the AF is overridden when I engage back button focus.
Hey olle, i have been doing wildlife photography for just under a year with a canon 400d camera, however i feel i need an upgrade. I would like a mirrorless sony camera but im not sure what one to get. I was looking at the sony a7III but do you have any suggestions? ps love the vids
I just got an A7RV, and am still learning about it, if I am getting this wrong please straighten it out for me! The A7RV has a feature you can just turn on and leave on: Full Time DMF. When that's on, you can stay in AF-C, and the manual focus ring just works, although the magnified view does not come up unless you turn it to MF on the camera or on the lens.
@@GunterdieGudrun I think what @ameleh61 refers to is a feature called ”Full Time DMF” It’s basically the same thing but you don’t need to press the AF-on button for it to work. That feature is only available when pairing the camera with certain newer Sony lenses, I believe!😄
@@GunterdieGudrun On the A7R5, Full Time DMF as a Focus Mode is there, but it is also available as a setting that allows you to stay in an automatic focus mode, but still move the focus ring to either get final focus, or to tell the camera where you want to focus so you can then hit autofocus again and it knows what you want. It's the best of both worlds, as far as I can tell. Here's from the online manual: If you set [Full Time DMF] to [On], you can always perform manual focusing operations without setting [Focus Mode] to [DMF]. There are some exceptions, and it does not bring up the magnifier, so maybe it's not as good as the way he's got it.
@@ameleh61 The DMF is great for fine tuning your focus after achieving AF and then you take the shot. However, after each shot, you have to use AF again and second, it doesn't work with tracking.
Hey Olle. Thanks for the video and thumbs up for the Sleep Token Shirt ;) BTW, what’s the Cap? I saw it on an Instagram reel earlier but with a golden dear logo. I’m super curious!
@@ollenilssonen thanks for you answer! I will look it up. Im curious tho about the 600mm do you have some chromatic abberation with unedited pics? I do have it a little so im curious about yours.
When I setup the action button. The camera is not focusing. It focuses only when I press my af on .because it is my back button focus . Then should I press three things at once ? Shutter ,back button focus and the action button which is customized
I'm not understanding the benefit of having both AF/MF Selector Toggle and back-button focus as stated in your video. I prefer and use the AF/MF Selector Toggle as an advanced back-button focus setup. When I press it, it goes to complete manual focus and I can press the shutter button without going back to AF. Also I have my red record button as a focus magnifier which helps for magnifying the subject when manual focusing. I like this setup better because I use my camera for general purpose so if I hand the camera to someone (I just declick the AF/MF Selector Toggle or when I turn off the camera and back on it resets the shutter to full AF) they won't get confuse as to why the camera isn't focusing when they half press the shutter (compared to the classic back button focus where the shutter doesn't do any AF). Also thanks I will definitely utilize that Action Button (assigned to m AEL button)!
Hej! olle im 13 and love photography however im stuck with a terrible camera that has a fixed zoom lens (lumix fz82). And its got alote of problems... i realy need an upgrade but sadly i only have 250 gbp wich is like 320 dollars (just the camera body, i have an extra 60 dollars for a lens). I would love to start making short cinematic films and take some beautiful photos! Do you have any ideas on what i could get or even afford? I thought you would be a great person to answer my question.
I have never experienced that the shutter sound scares animals, I have experienced the opposed where I hade a moose that where curios about the sound walked up about 2 meters away from me before I started to back up which made the moose startled and walk away
I am surprised you set your panic high-shutter speed button to set the exposure to -1.3. I would have expected the opposite, when i go into high shutter speed bird in flight mode i increase exposure to +1.0 or more, because birds will often go against the bright sky as backdrop and if i dont up-expose the bird will just come out black, and autofocus will struggle. anyway great video, i will try some of the things!
@@DanielSymphonies It’s because I don’t want the ISO to go bananas. I’m mostly shooting at f6.3 and it’s often already too dark for the fast shutter speeds. I also find the photos to turn out sharper at a lower exposure😄 Totally understand your point on the bright sky! Thanks mate!
Great video, very useful and non-obvious tips! Instead of BBAF I simply map AF lock to AF-on button. Lock focus where you want, press the AF-on, recompose, shoot. Instead of assigning AF/MF toggle to say AEL I prefer to assign Recall custom hold to it like you described later on. In this case - S tracking area to quickly focus on small object and being able to recompose at the same time. This is all the more complicated when shooting all sorts of stuff, not only the wildlife :)
