I use waverly chalk paint but I always add a little water to thin it out. I never use the white waverly chalk paint for the background of the sign because I always had issues with it. I use KILZ chalk paint for my background.
I use the apple barrel all the time on my signs and I never have it pull up but I also pull the vinyl up while it is still wet so maybe that is the difference.
Great video. Have you ever tried using contact paper instead of vinyl for the template cutouts? Way cheaper but I haven't tried it myself, I saw a hack about it so I figured I'd pass it on :)
THANK YOU!! I have been using waverly chalk paint for stencils and it pulls up almost everytime. I thought it was just me. I bought I couple cans of rustoleum spray paint last weekend. Can't wait to try that method!
Now that it has been 2 months since this video, have you been using the spray paint? How do you like it?! Can’t wait to hear your experience with it before I purchase anything :) thank you for this very helpful video!!!
Hi beautiful Sallie. I think that the easiest way is to first cote the stencil with clear water base spray and then spray again with your favorite water base color spray. Using water base dry faster and doesn’t have toxic fumes. You can leave natural wood or stained as a base. Give it a try. Good luck.
Very helpful. I wonder if you could try some of the Waverly with some acrylic gloss medium mixed in with it - to see if it stops it from bleeding or lifting up? x
Hi thank you for this great video! Question what is the white paint that you put on top of the stencil? What it the same one that you had applied to the whole board" And how long did you let it dry before applying the black paint?
Sallie, I love your channel I have seen all your videos, I learned so much thanks to you. Thanks for showing step by step everything you do, and also showing all the products you use. I believe you should try to use an airbrush, probably you can get even better results. Keep up doing a great job. God bless you....!
I had horrible results with the Apple Barrel paint too. I had whole letters peeling off! I personally love waverly so far! I’ve been using a makeup sponge to dab on my paint and it’s amazing and way cheap, for a pack of like 30 I think it was only like $2 or so.
This was so helpful thank you!!! I agree with the spray paint. I liked how that one looks better. How would you touch that up though 🤔 I’m curious. The sprayed on part I mean
Simply Sallie oh really! That’s awesome! I’ve tried the chalk paint and the acrylics before and I didn’t like the results. But I’ve learned a lot from your videos and I think I was doing a few things wrong before. You sharing has been so helpful thank you so much. I appreciate it. And I’m learning a lot. Off to harbor freight I go soon 😆
@@SimplySallie how you doing hope all is well. I was watching this video and I have been struggling with my wood signs maybe you could help me out. So I have allowed the paint to dry for a whole 24 hours and when I place the vinyl and paint over it once i start to remove the vinyl the paint peels off. Can you tell me what vinyl are you using because i see it doesn’t peel when you remove the vinyl.
Great video!! I am going to try spray paint now, I have been having horrible luck with my paint peeling up with my stencil and have tried countless brands of acrylic and chalk paints, tried with ModPodge and without (Sometimes worse with!) it’s been so frustrating. Thank you for sharing your tips I am so happy I found you! Couple questions.. Have you tried the chalk spray paint? Also any tips on how you avoid background paint color peeling up with your vinyl? I am even having this happen with stain. Not sure if it’s my wood but I always sand and apply a coat of polycrylic over my stain and let dry for a day or so and still seeing splintering. I use Oracle 631 and a knockoff on Amazon for 813 but it’s called Vivid Vinyl Stencil Mask. Thank you again and great job, new subscriber! 😁
Thank you so much! This very well may be the brand of the stencil. I swear by oramask! I have found with my methods, the paint/stain should not pull up as long as you use the valspar 2000 as your base coat, or your stain, and allow to dry long enough. Hope this helps some! 😊
Hi Sallie! I know this is an older video and you may not even see this, but I was looking for the video on touch ups and couldn’t find it. Can you link it? Thank you!!
Can I ask what kind of vinyl you use for your stenciling? How about your transfer paper? I'm just getting started in this myself and I'm mainly learning how to use my Cameo and make gifts for family and friends and spruce up my home with pretty signs. Thank you for any tips/tricks! Loved this video and found it super informative, I've started out using apple barrel paints and found an issue as well with consistent coverage.
Great Video Sallie ! Just wondering how the spray paint would hold up to multiple uses with mylar stencils. Also did you roll-on the same white over the stencil used on the wood ?
I seeing how each of the black paint held up. Where do you buy your vinyl and transfer tape? Can you make a Viedo showing how you clean up the letters when there not clean and if you get paint on your back round wood ? I woukd be interested in seeing how you do it..New Subbie TFS
I'm just starting and I LOVE waverly! A little goes a long way and I water it down. So I use a spray bottle and water the paint down and it works great!
This has been one of my favorite videos you’ve made. Very informative. What about a video telling us about sealers? Like for porch leaners, porch signs, bathroom signs, etc.
Simply Sallie I made my first WELCOME “porch leaner” sign today, using the Krylon clear spray to seal my stencil & black spray paint. I absolutely loved using the spray paint verses the foam brush!! Thank you again for this video!!
Exactly what I was looking for before purchasing paints for stenciling. Thanks for doing this, Sallie! Very helpful to me:)
Wow!!! I thought for sure the spray paint would lift. Great video.
Apple barrel peeled for me too. It did better when I peeled the stencil off while the paint was still wet.

Hey did you ever make a video on how to touch up the mistakes. Would love to watch that video.
Hi! This is coming soon!
Hi! So at this point what are you consistently using for your wood signs? Thanks 😊
This was exciting! I couldn’t wait to find out the winner!
Good info. Thank you! I look forward to seeing how you touch them up.

I just took a little bit of the colormaxx in black on my vinyl pick and touched it up, and it looks great! Can't even see where the spot was.

get some carpet padding to set the plywood on when painting to keep it from moving around.
Do you wait for the paint to dry before you pull up the stencil?
Yes! I have found i have the best results doing this.

Hi. Do you wait for the paints to be completely dry?
Yes!
Great Video Sallie ! Just wondering how the spray paint would hold up to multiple uses with mylar stencils. Also did you roll-on the same white over the stencil used on the wood ?
Hi! I honestly not sure about the mylar stencils, so sorry! Yes I did use the same white as the background to prevent bleeding 😊
What type of vinyl do you use for you stencil? How do you get it to not pull up the base layer of paint?
Oramask 813. I have a video coming on my method for wood signs and no peeling or bleeding 😊
@@SimplySallie can't wait to see it!!
Hi what kind of white paint do you use for your wood signs?
For the background, valspar 2000 semigloss high tide white!
How do you seal the wood sign with the spray paint?
No, I do not for the painted signs. I like to seal stained wood signs with paint though!
What did you roll on top of the vinyl before the black paint?
The base paint color!
I love the font you used with the spray paint testing. What font is that please :)
Crafty Beach 😊
What type of rollers do you use for the white on the signs ?
4 inch foam rollers!
I seeing how each of the black paint held up. Where do you buy your vinyl and transfer tape? Can you make a Viedo showing how you clean up the letters when there not clean and if you get paint on your back round wood ? I woukd be interested in seeing how you do it..New Subbie TFS
I buy my vinyl and tape at US cutter, or Amazon for small orders of vinyl. Yes i have this video coming soon! 😊
What vinyl do you use for your stencil
Oramask 813
One more question...the spray paint was semi gloss? Did you let it dry all the way?
Yes it was dry, I like using flat spray paint now on lettering!
Hi! What kind of roller do you use?
It is a brayer roller. I linked it in this video description 😊
Great video, thank you!
I love the arteza brand
I'm just starting and I LOVE waverly! A little goes a long way and I water it down. So I use a spray bottle and water the paint down and it works great!
What type of house paint? Eggshell or satin?
I like semigloss!
This has been one of my favorite videos you’ve made. Very informative. What about a video telling us about sealers? Like for porch leaners, porch signs, bathroom signs, etc.
Thank you!! The only sealer I ever use on everything is minwax polycrylic. I have heard a lot of people use the spray on kind too.
Simply Sallie I made my first WELCOME “porch leaner” sign today, using the Krylon clear spray to seal my stencil & black spray paint. I absolutely loved using the spray paint verses the foam brush!! Thank you again for this video!!
One word... Gesso.
Gesso is expenisve.. chaulk paint is basically gesso, renamed
Hence why chaulk paint is expensive lol..
