    Delighted to see you back in action Chris! Like me, your videos have helped many others too! Got my first k 6 years ago and now have 3. Got all of them as non runners. If you didnt post these videos, i would not have been able to get them back on the road! Thank you! You are a LEGEND!!! I suggest an option to donate towards all the videos you have made and saved many a lot of money! I would happily donate!

      Yes, but the fairing has advantages. When the time comes to replace your steering head bearings you'll understand.

    Have you thought of sourcing out a used bracket? Us old BMW wrench twisters have connections. Somewhere out there is a wrecked 1100LT with a good bracket just waiting to find a new bike to attach itself to. The shops looking good. I've got two R1150RTs, a K1100RS, and a K1200LT on my shop floor right now. Take care.

      Hello up there, A used mount would be great! One of my patrons has offered to lend me one to use as a jig to weld / modify the damaged one. I'm lucky to have such wonderful people who appreciate my video project. This repair is going to take a few weeks, unfortunately. If you know of someone willing to donate one that would speed things up by enabling this machine to be operable much sooner. Thanks, Chris

    I can imagine that getting that welded into the right alignment could be almost impossible. I can foresee some bending in the future. That could become a nightmare.
    I think the only way to make that up straight, would be to have a good straight one and bolt it to a jig with all 4 holes and also the stem, then bolt the bent one in there and let the welder have at it.

      There is a similar bracket on the R - RT airheads. Mine had almost sheared off after two lowsides. At least on my bike, those crashes bent the four arms of this steel mount slightly. It took some time to bend it back into shape after welding it. In my case, I eyeballed it on the dismounted fairing, checking after each bend that the four steel arms still reached the mounting holes in the fairing. I then took a few steps back, looked at it to see if it sat perpendicular and equidistant to a few visual cues on the fairing, then took it back to the vise and readjusted. This was rinsed and repeated until it got just right.
      What makes it difficult is that you're struggling with adjustments in all three directions, and adjusting one influences all the other arms.
      In a nutshell, it's a tedious job - especially if the mounting bracked has completely separated in two!

    Can you shake it just a little bit more I'm not certain if I see that it's loose.

    Hello Chris. Nice video. For a first bike, do you recommend a BMW like the one in the video ? Or would I be better with a more recent model ? Thank you for the tip.

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd avoid more recent models and keep the money in your pocket with an older model. With that in mind I'd recommend a different make for a first bike. BMW is a handful for a new rider. I like to start new riders off on a lightweight dual sport like a Kawasaki KLR or Suzuki DR / DRZ, dirt being a more forgiving training ground. If limited to street I'd recommend an inexpensive bike without a fairing. It's easier to see the road in front of you without all that bulk, as well. You'll drop it at least once and it's easier to lift a fairing-less bike than one fully faired. Less damage and all that too. Gain confidence and sell it or pass it along to another new rider. Then find the BMW of your dreams and if it's an older one I'll hopefully be here to help. Good Luck, Chris

    I wonder if that started out as a little crack that just kept getting bigger with every bump in the road, or every bit of wind.

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This bike was dropped once so yes, most likely a crack that continued. Thanks Ray, Chris
