"The Sweetest Taboo" dropped my first year of college. One of my buddies in the dorm had a tape of the album that he used to play at night sometimes. "Smooth Operator" dropped when I was a junior in high school, so we were already fans. Her vocal tones are incredible.
I love that you love Sade. I grew up with her music. This song sounds as good today as it did back in the late 1980s. She is the soundtrack to my life and still going strong, and as you go through her back catalogue you're gonna love her more than ever.
If I'm not mistaken, this is now the 7th Sade reaction you've done on YT Empress, and all I can say is . . . please don't stop!!! 👍 I've been a HUGE Sade Adu fan since I first heard her two big hits Your Love Is King and Smooth Operator off of her excellent 1985 Diamond Life debut album. I had the good fortune to see her live at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater during her 1988 Stronger Than Price tour (still have the concert booklet!) and she sounded exactly as she does on her studio recordings with that unique breathy voice. She's always had a tight band of talented musicians too, and that night was no exception. She had a couple of wardrobe changes and performed barefoot, her white outfit looked like it was spray painted on (8th row center seats, so no binoculars required 😄). A gorgeous artist all-around, and my unrequited love interest who was a trained singer and accompanied me to that concert was equally impressed with Sade's vocal skills. These types of precious memories now mean more to me with each passing year. 🙂

When this song came out it was an instant classic hit. That snare kicking off the groove was so good 🥰 Sade has made some amazing music and her discography is definitely worth listening to. I've been a fan since her first album with Hang On To Your Love. Her sound is intoxicating. Good reaction video Empress.
Love this. She's the epitome of elegance in singing. Never overdoes it, never overadorns a note. I've watched quite a few Sade reactions, and one thing nobody's done is the album version of Smooth Operator, which has a very wry spoken intro, which throws the rest of the song into relief.
So, right now I'm reading a book about the intense, tumultuous love shared by "The Great Gatsby" writer F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda in the 1920s. This is weirdly a fitting soundtrack song to that story....appropriately jazzy lounge vibe with lovers who are almost TOO into each other.
I love Sade! I've just discovered probably the earliest video of Sade singing, when she was in a Latin Soul/Funk group in London, England called Pride. The song is also called Pride. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/W2T6cRXCPSI/w-d-xo.html
Love your reaction as usual Empress!!😃. I just knew this Sade pick would end up being one of your favorites of hers. As a little kid in the 80s I remember thinking she was so mysterious and intriguing. The sound of her singing voice automatically makes you perk up and listen. …and this song just has that laid back funky sophisticated groove that you can’t help but appreciate. Of course as a kid I don’t think I paid any attention to the meaning of the lyrics so also appreciate those much more as an adult 😂
This was the first single of her second album ''Promise''. This album was waiting after her successful debut album ''Diamond Life'' who it's produced the hits ''Love Is a King'' and particulary the top 10 ''Smooth Operator''. This song reaching the same position has ''Smooth Operator'' in US, peaked n.5 in debut 1986, making her second top 5 and her last top 10 to date. ''The Sweetest Taboo'' was also at the time her longest charting single of the charts, spent 27 weeks in the charts (until ''No Ordinary Love'' who this song spent 28 weeks in Billboard and peaked n.28). At that time, the song make this album a huge evenment and this song propulsed this album to n.1 both in US and UK. Her debut album was her best-selling, but this second album was her most successful albums in terms of singles who this album made a icon during the 80's of the pop and the jazz and selling also very well. She continued to have hit singles and iconic singles depist this wasn't top 10 singles, like with ''Paradise'' (reaching the top 20 in 1988) and ''No Ordinary Love'' (her final top 40 and spent a very long time in the Billboard).
@@EmpressReacts But ''No Ordinary Love'' was a considere a hit, because of her massive airplay and also because of her longevity in the charts (spent 28 weeks in the charts).

Sade was a model then a relatively successful designer in the UK before fronting the band named after her. With a background like that, her standout style is definitely a product of her own making. She’s cool without even trying to be. There have been a lot of interpretation to the meaning of this song. With euphemisms like “everyday is Christmas and every night is New Year’s Eve” and “Will you keep on bringing out the best in me,” it makes clear that “the sweetest taboo”she is speaking of is female orgasm. Back in those days that was a bigger taboo than it is today. Sade used euphemisms in a lot of their early work. Their US debut single “your love is king” was heavy on the euphemism but also very direct where she proclaimed “I’m coming.” 😂 The early and mid 80’s were altogether very heavy on this subtle boundary pushing when it came to sexuality. Then Madonna came along and knocked all boundaries out of place. Madonna’s success made her a blueprint for the over sexualization we see in today’s music. For better or worse. Sade is one of my favorite artists. She makes timeless music with a voice that’s unlike anything else out there.
@@EmpressReacts The Brits make everything sound sophisticated. 😂. There has been a lot of debate about whether this song is about heroin or drug use in general. Some say it’s about extramarital affair. There has been so many theories. The only taboo that matches up perfectly with all the innuendo and euphemism without an out of place or throwaway lyric is female orgasm. The good thing about these subtle allusions is that it allows us to interpret the lyrics into something that’s meaningful to us. I’ve always interpreted this as being about infatuation or having a crush on someone doing better than you in life. That’s not exactly taboo, but it always takes me exactly where the music was meant to take me. That’s the great thing about these types of songs. They mean whatever you want them to mean.
