  • Linus Torvalds speaks on LLMs and helping with Maintainer burn out in the Linux Kernel and how it effects the ability to get more people involved in the Linux Open Source Project. Will AI / LLM Programming be able to introduce new developers and help keep burn out low?

Another Psychological operations at work . What’s understood don’t need to be explained!!!! I will always support the “organic free and open source community!! Stay focused and stay grounded . Please protect your peace

AI is an inevitability. I at least trust it to be better implemented in open source projects versus something for profit, because at least you’re not as likely to outsource something, but then again, generative models are prone to hallucinations in the right circumstances.

I use Ubuntu , I wonder whether Windows or Linux is faster in training and running artificial intelligence models. After Nvidia’s announcement, artificial intelligence models in Windows were accelerated 3x with Cude 12.0. Is Linux faster? Does anyone know that?
    I like to be fast.

Do you think maintainers and contributors are already using AI to submit code?

      Yes. Yes, I do.

Using AI to generate the submitted code, or submitting code that integrates AI into the project?
If the latter is what you meant, I would say probably not yet. I feel like people are still cautious.
I don't know anything about AI programming applications and implementations, and I feel like most people don't either.

I was more thinking test cases or checking over code for obvious mistakes. I wouldn’t believe any of the existing maintainers are using it just because they’re expert at what they do anyway.

@@SavvyNik Oh, than definitely yes. I sometimes paste snippets of code into ChatGPT just to see if there are syntax errors, code optimization and best practices, etc.
But now that I thought of it, I saw LTT's video on "The best AI innovations". So it is possible to integrate AI into big applications or projects, but haven't seen any videos that explains how it works under-the-hood or if it is beneficial then linear programming.
Maybe that can be your next video series.

When was this? If all you think of AI is that it's "autocorrect on steroids" means that you really haven't used a modern AI model.

Next they're gonna wake up with half of their brains being replaced with an AI chip, which is not that bad if it comes with built-in image processing that can grant us night vision plus a bunch of cool filters.

@@parlor3115 I have used an AI model that with one prompt gathered information on a person and their restaurant business, that person's life story on getting that business up and going (scoured multiple sources from LinkedIn, Facebook groups, TH-cam and review sites to get this information), their menu items and contact information and then formatted it into HTML.
      One prompt.

Large language models are stupidly good at translation tasks. Security researchers are using them to deobfuscate code.
What I want to do is come up with a general model , but that would mean having to find out how to bundle whatever is currently out there, and personally, I would rather be a free open source project, versus that of your corporate and business oriented projects.

The core ideals of Linus Torvalds has strayed from those like Richard Stallman, and has become increasingly accepting of being a runner for proprietary software on proprietary hardware which contains proprietary code itself to even run. I view Linux now as a lesser of the evils in the market today, but still categorized in the same list.

If you insist on staying in the smallest possible niche, what exactly do you gain?
You are not forced to use any of the proprietary stuff.
Linux is actually more free than Gnu, which strongly limits who can use it in what ways.

The further "open source" gets from "usability" is mostly accredited to the revolutions the earth has around money. GNU license allows anyone to view modify and redistribute the code. I fail to understand how on earth anything from any other developer can possibly be more free? With the integration of proprietary drivers in kernel 6, the proprietary and secretive GPU manufacturers (besides AMD) have been manufacturing hardware only accessable by "approved" proprietary ports rendering your system a paperweight without these made up languages unless you want proprietary software in the kernel level to keep your system running. How free is that? @@gzoechi

With more support, i would like to assist the earth in gaining the ideals of the FREE internet as it was founded on the core principles of. The lack of knowledge held by others coupled with an "IDGAF about earth as long as my bubble remains" attitude, have enabled these made up languages for money to be considered, "normal". @@gzoechi

The GNU network operating on the GNU general public liscense that states, "you have the right to read, modify and distribute"?? I fail to find ANYTHING on this planet more free than that. The idea behind the "caring people in the world" looking to open the market to a free internet is hindered by proprietary hardware, which is why Linux adopted proprietary code in Kernel 6. If you insist on supporting made up languages for money, please continue telling people that GNU is anything but the freest thing left even if society has taken a sledge hammer to the project. The ugly duckling lives on walking on nails until the money that everyone warships destroys whats left.@@gzoechi

Are you manufacturing your own processors, steel and components as well? Open Source has always been a way for corporations to get a lot of free stuff, on your free work and wasted time...
