I think this is a good nuanced take on the situation. I'm quite new to watching the sport, found it by discovering Devon. I gotta say I think the trashtalk leading up to matches can be a bit much sometimes, but he tends to back it up and he handles a loss very well I think. I think if Ryan just accepted his loss here many people would respect that, however by doing this whole complaint thing he turned quite a few people against him.

What a world it would be if all conflicts were handled in a similar fashion. It looked rough for Espey for a moment but as the dust settles I believe he comes out gaining respect and maybe even teaching some observers a little about life. Being humbled is no fun, but it certainly reveals character.

For the sport and apparently in general, e.g. even dart players indulge in talk trash and gamesmanship. Also, there’s nothing inherently wrong with bullying. In fact, a man's true character is generally revealed by how he deals with bullies. Now, we have a better understanding of the type of man Ryan is.
