    This is how i installed my gable end attic fan. I bought it from Lowe’s/Home Depot on sale and put it in my attic to try and cool it down in the summer, because our upstairs was getting too hot. It was cheaper than running my AC constantly. Also i wired in an override on/off switch and a pilot override switch to control the thermostat on the fan.

    Good plan. We moved the fan thermostat from the fan over to the crawl space area and hung a decent thermometer next to the mounting position close to the crawl space for attic temp reference. This helps by not having to go up into the attic and adjust the thermostat at the gable. Big help. We set the turn on temp for 110 and that seems to work best so it doesn't run all night long. Typically it turns off around 9 pm on a warm evening and on around 1 pm on a hot day. We lower our living space temps by 10 degrees by having an attic fan with our single story ranch home. One other feature we installed was a maximum temperature shut off which turns off the power in the event temps rise above 200, in case of a fire, it won't run and feed fresh air to the flames. We also wired the thermostat with a pilot light switch which was mounted on the wall near the ceiling just below the crawl space which is located in the hallway to bedrooms. This allows for a master on/off for personal needs as well as for maintenance needs.

      @@KD-mj2ms There is a high temp shut off in the thermostat that enables at a permanent set temp, not sure of the setting temp but it will turn off.

    One of the tricks I learned is that the fan should be sealed around the opening or else it tends to just pull in air from the outside and recycle it instead of pulling from the attic. You also need a vent at the other end of the attic (or in the soffits) so it pulls the air across the whole space. Good luck!

      I was going to ask about an intake vent but you answered the question thank you. I will also put a vent in a lower outside door to allow air to be drawn in at night.

    Don't feel bad about the wiring mistake. When I bought my house the only way the smoke alarm would work was if the hall light was on. Yep, the builder hooked the smoke alarm to a hall light switch. Against code but they got away with it. I disconnected the electric smoke detector and put in a battery powered.

    good video, but you should warn viewers when you're showing your wiring with the switch to the fan/thermostat switch legs that 120 volts A/C can KILL them with even a momentary contact with the energized circuit if the current hits them just right! ( a 50 milli-amp current across the heart can put a person's heart into 'fibrillation' which will require a defibrillator to restore the heart rhythm)

    How much of a difference would you say this makes for you during the summer?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The goal was to cool the attic from 130 degrees to like 100 in the summer, so that the AC wouldn't have to constantly run.
      Ideally there would be lots of air-flow from the outside.
      Not sure about the difference it made, since one day it would be 90 degrees outside, then the next it was 80 degrees.
      But i'm sure it helped somewhat to lower the attic temp. But i can't say that it immediately dropped the temperature 30 degrees or something, i never checked.

    The problem with having a black wire or the hot wire running to the fan and the switch controlling the neutral or the white wire is that if it grounds out somehow it's going to turn on or in layman's terms it's going to have power to it 24/7 so even if you turn off that switch and you have a hot going to it that's uncontrolled it will still electrocute you with that light switch off

    Let's assume that the bats get into your attic thru that vent. By putting up the screen in the daylight hours you have trapped any other bats inside the attic to die. Better idea would be to put up the screen at night when the bat are outside. Then when the come back in the morning they can't get back into your attic. Then you start the other work. Oh, yes. Did the fan cool the attic?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes doing it at night would be the best way. Or i've seen where you can make a 1-way tube or something where the bats can get out but not back in. But i only had free time during the day. Night would have also been a lot cooler up there too. And yes the fan helped i think. But i didn't really do any testing to check the temperatures with the fan off or on, so i don't really know.

      So far this summer we've had a couple days in the high 80's, the upstairs does seem cooler. It's not unbearably hot like last year. But to give you a definitive answer i'd have to go up to the attic on a day when it's 90 degrees and see if it's still 143 degrees. That's not really something on the top of my to-do list.

    • @grampadad
      @grampadad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IMPORTANT!! I've got a much better/cheaper system, for your over heated attic! I've studied this kind of situation (being involved in home construction, most of my life) with the dredded hot attic effect, which also eventually heats up the rooms in the house, and also reduces the shingle life, with the sun bearing down, trapped in your attic year after year!
      If your determined to use a ''little'' gable wall attic fan, which isn't moving much air, even if your doing everything else correctly! You should then close off your roof vents and open up soffit vents in the lower soffit eaves, to draw cool, outside air, up from the lower part of the attic which then travels up through the attic, allowing (chimney effect) naturally drawing heat up, and out your fan vent, and will work 24/7 even with fan off, or with no fan at all! You have a But not your most efficient system, sorry to say! Possibly the least efficient/cost effective, when considering several, much better/cheaper way!
      Your best way to draw heat out of the attic and ''without 'the need of a fan'', is by opening soffit/eave vents up, allowing heat to be naturally to be drawn up and out roof vents/attic gable vent! No fan needed.
      The very best system, is ridge vents! Their the best way to expel the most heat volume, with soffit vents open!
      Your not drawing heat out, if there's still heat, trapped (vacuumed) in your roof, that's not moving! It's only drawing cool air in through the upper part of the roof, through your roof vents (if you have roof vents) which are located at the top of the roof, leaving the heat still trapped deep down, in the roof area, and at your attic floor, which is conducting the heat down through the ceiling of the house, which is then eventually heating your living space, towards the mid part of the day, on into the night!
      Think of it the way your going about it, in simpler terms. Like drinking from a straw. By poking a hole in the middle of a straw (think of it as where your upper roof vents are) then try to draw liquid from your glass, it wont! It only draws through the hole we made in the straw (which would represent where the location of where your upper roof vents are) since it's the closest opening of the draw! Now think of it doing the same thing in your attic drawing cool air in from the top of your attic leaving the heat below this point, unable to move trapped heat in your attic and then eventually conducting heat down into the roomes of your house, and melting your shingles! The more you think of it, the more it makes since!

      @shelby50411 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have only watched the video once through. Question: It appeared that your attic had minimal insulation and that there were numerous air leaks from the climate controlled living space up into the attic. If I am correct, that attic needs to be air sealed and insulated immediately. Sealing the living space "envelope" is really important.
    Do you have air conditioning installed in this house? Does the power attic ventilator (PAV) run even when the A/C runs? HVAC experts are adamant about never running a PAV at the same time that the A/C is running - due to the PAV pulling a lot of conditioned air up and out of the attic. And they are adamant about that rule - even when the attic is properly air sealed - so that air infiltration is minimized.

    • @MrNorthstar50
      @MrNorthstar50 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes your right he would have been way better off sealing the leaks in his living space and bringing his attic insulation up to code or better. Professionals in the field claim that attic fans are not a cost-saving investment.May 31, 2017

    • @bon3sh4nks21
      @bon3sh4nks21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finally someone that gets it! Attic fans are a bandaid at best in most cases.
      The attic has got to be properly sealed and insulated for this to have any real chance at making more than a 10°F difference.
      Most houses with R-38 or better and a properly placed/sized whole house fan do amazingly well without an attic fan.

      It's hard to tell. I haven't really gone back up there in a while. I only know that when it's a hot day and i hear the fan on in the attic, i know it's over 110 degrees which is what i set the thermostat to. The only way i think i could test it is if say there were 2 days in a row around 90 degrees, the first day turn the fan off then go up at 5pm and check the average temp. Then the next day turn the fan on then go up at the same time and recheck the temperatures. I just think that our attic didn't get a lot of airflow so anything like fans or baffles will help blow that hot air out of there.

    And you didn’t test the attic temperature after the fan is installed? I watched the whole video just for that!!! 😫

    This is a how to video, I have several questions and concerns. Your video is very misleading and could get other into deep trouble. As an example, some homeowners insurance policies strictly prohibit the homeowner from doing electrical work on their homes, better check with your agent as if anything happens to your home you could find yourself not covered. In most if not all cases an electrical permit is required even if you as a homeowner are permitted to do the work without being a licenced electrician. Better to be safe than sorry.
    Was the picture at 6:51 the final completion/ connection at the fan unit ? Did you connect the grounding conductor to the devices ? What was the load of the existing circuit you acquired power from to determine if it was adequate to support the new fan unit, the system looked older so there maybe too much on the existing circuit already ? I noticed crimp sleeves "used for connecting ground wires" in your video, did you use the proper amount of twist and correct tools to connect them ? Did you properly support and protect the wiring "romex / nmb in the attic area were required ? There appears to many possible issues with your installation that does not meet basic electrical code requirements. Did you pull the required electrical permit for the added wiring and have it inspected ?
    Just asking.. I'm not trying to be an ass but if you're going to teach, be ready for constructive criticism, especially when it comes to fire, life safety issues.

    Seems like a reasonable idea. I probably would have used a square piece of plywood and cut a round opening in it. The plywood would have sealed off the opening.

    This what keeps us busy, homeowners failing at work they attempt. Just another TH-cam wanna bee. Install a operable louver, that vent and fan are very inefficient, no one should take this mans advice in this "instructional video"!!! Especially the electric work. Please reconsider what you post.
