Those the guy who talks about were Syrians who lived and worked in Crete for a while and some went back while they could talk Greek. They brought with, in some small specific neighborhoods of Syria the Greek culture they acquired. This way before Syria was ruined.

(Crete for 200 years less because of the Venetians but you get the gist. Some Cretans converted to Islam just like Greeks did. As the opposite also happened with Turks converting to Christianity (although less common)
