    So well done; simple language in a pleasant tone with clear imagery. And the wonderful use of fast forward saves viewers time. By my calculations Chris has saved us all collectively over a year of time. Let's just say each viewing could have been 5 minutes longer at regular speed.
    (250,000 views)(5 min)(60min/hr)(24hr/day)(365day/year)=1.19 years
    Chris has actually created over a year of time. And we can only hope that all have used it well maybe by drinking a glass of wine. Thanks Chris.

    Real good video for the amateur. It's done differently by the professional.

    You could use a wooden long board as spacer. It doesn't get crushed, alot less time consuming, and ensures a more leveled layers.

    I just finished up a brick backsplash on a kitchen. We applies release over the brick prior to grouting and turned out beautifully, no haze, no discoloration

    you could use the grouting bag and squeeze the mortar into the joints. much cleaner.

      Grout bag is the ignorant way. Use a mortar gun.

    Cool video. Couple thoughts on it:
    Some people has suggested using a mortar bag, I wouldn't use one for a few reasons. 1) you have to run with pretty wet mortar to get it to flow properly. That increases the chance of smearing the bricks if tooled to early. 2) you end up wasting a lot more material because you often overfill joints in order to get proper bond (no holes) after tooling. And 3) it may be faster, but it doesn't get the penetration that using a tuck pointer does. This is just a veneer wall, but in masonry repointing this becomes a bigger issue due to longevity of the repair.
    I would make a recommendation of picking up a S style jointer that's flat. They look just like the ones used to do a concave joint, but they are flat. Using the flat jointer for the head joints will keep a lot of mortar off the bricks rather than holding the hawk up to the wall and using the longer pointer. Make sure you essentially scrape the mortar off the hawk with the flat jointer, and push it into the head joint. Takes a little practice but it will save you cleaning.
    Cool project and thanks for sharing.

      Lake School Restoration Channel you are supposed to bag it in then use a brick jointer

    Not sure how you go faster but just a suggestion on your audio levels Chris. Very good vid and helpful but could barely hear you with laptop & TH-cam volumes turned up full. Just a bit of gain boost when you are putting it together will help a lot. Thanks for this.

    Dear Chris,
    Greetings from a former Detroiter now living in Tbilisi, Georgia!
    The cellar looks great! Very nice tutorial and very nice results. Still not sure I should try to take on this DIY this job, but enjoyed the demonstration nevertheless. I do have one question, however. While watching the video, I couldn't help but notice your accent. You sound Canadian. In fact, I was certain you were Canadian. But then you used "square feet" in the end. I'm completely thrown off. Can you clarify? :D :D

      Hello and Thanks! Regarding the metric / imperial; Yes, there are two things going on there....
      First; in Canada we switched to metric in the 1970's, but not construction; we still kept the imperial measurments. So we still buy 2 x4's and 2 x 6's to frame with, and still lay down 4x8 sheets of plywood and drywall,, and this house for sale is 2200 sq feet.
      The second is my age. I was first educated in imperial, and then swithched to metric in grade three. So I know all the imperial stuff. I still say its 80 degrees outside, we are 5 miles away, and Ill have another pint please!

    Question: did you buy the bricks in perfect edges and rectangular shape? I don’t know where to find bricks that looks rugged (slightly damaged effect with dents) like the ones you installed. Do perfect bricks just end up with dents after putting mortar in spaces in between? Share your ideas pls

    • @AK-tx1vg
      @AK-tx1vg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can apply thin bricks directly over drywall. Just use construction adhesive and voila.

    Why didn't you use a grout/mortar bag? That would have made your work go a lot faster bud.

    • @chconger
      @chconger  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried a bag. Either the mortar was too thick and would not squeeze out, or it was too thin and would run everywhere. I gave up.
