      Those “NYC disco style consoles are outdated. You had to lean over that big panel just to get to the technics… and now days.. hardly anyone uses vinyl decks. All the riders says some sort of nexus model CDJ’s and probably a pioneer mixer… it’s ridiculous. The old style booths didn’t need that much rack space.. (3) 8U racks.. all in the way of getting to the decks… idk. But, I had to build about 6 or so different designs for different layouts … all changed with time, and a lot depended on what mixer we were using …

    Mojaxx: gotta hand it to you, your gear reviews are pretty much the best. You always cover the essentials and the criticisms you share are not tempered in any way. Your demonstrations are spot on...you demo the mixer and its features exactly how I would .... when you were playing around with the ISO, i caught myself yelling out " kill 'em all!" (referring to the 3 bands) ... I wanted to see for myself if it would indeed kill the entire signal.. but you did exactly that just a second after i opened my big mouth. lol
    that mixer looks sick, probably sounds sick too... it looks like it would be a treat to use. Rotaries are such a treat to spin on...the rackmount conundrum would also be an issue with me...but frankly i think a mixer like this would be the catalyst for changing my entire configuration in order to make sure it was properly accommodated... It would be a challenge, yes. But a labour of love and worth it imo.

    Great video and overall review of the Union Audio Orbit.6 - I own an original Bozak CMA-10-2DLC Rotary, but this Orbit.6 takes off where Bozak and then Urei left the warm sound of pure stereo; I have to own one of these before I pass to the next life, this Orbit.6 rocks and the smoothness of the pots are truly magical even though I'm not present like you were, but I could definitely tell the quality. This is not a mass market product, it is meant to be used by discreet DJs and higher end clubs that want to deliver above the top sound

    Thanks for the review here brother. It was very timely as I was about to order the ARS 6 channel. My phone had to have been listening and this popped up in the recommended. My very 1st mixer was a rotary mixer from Japan and I used to follow Harvey around back in the day to hear the legendary sound of the v6. It was so special back then-so warm and full of emotion. As a broke college student that piece just wasn’t an option. Fast forward 25 years and a rotary collection later (still at it bc house is home for life) the downside of the ARS mixer (love it too) is the lack of 4th channel preamp for someone like me still playing on 4 turntables in additional to the 2 digital I/O. This work of art Andy has created solves everything for me personally. The rack mount means little these days-it’s not heavy like the v10 so it will be easy to fabricate a raised mount with a bit of ergonomic angle to help hand position and still have space above it to mount the ARS. It arrives Thursday so excited to build a mount for it this weekend. Will post a vid of it in action on a nice system. ☺️🙏🏽

    Of course I have a wish list. I’m hard to please. I wish that filter was both high and low pass. Especially with the direct outputs on each channel. Being a producer that would come very handy but I would love to have the low and high pass filter‘s to shape the sound on the way to recording. just seems like a missed opportunity to me.
    And I owned a master sounds and I just can’t get used to that vertical isolator.
    For the price I do believe it should be a proper isolator situated horizontally. Also split EQ should happen. Not absolutely necessary but again for the price, I think it should have it. Can’t wait to see what else they come with out of that lab!
    I currently own the ARS 9100 ( for me an upgrade to the MS 4v). But I’m always itching for the next best thing for my hi fi system.
    Yeah, I’m that guy. Lol.

    Great video Mojaxx - I've always upgraded my gear when i feel the limitations of the stuff i'm using is holding me back. I went from a Gemini 626 to a Pioneer DJM600 & then to my current Xone:92 and can't see why i would move from that to be honest. So would have to say that as my sound & style of DJing have changed over the years then the Xone:92 is my favourite mixer. But having said that I would ABSOLUTELY KILL to have a go on a Allen & Heath DB4, a Pioneer DJM-V10 & also a Model 1 or 1.4 to just see what they sound & feel like. I've (just about) got used to routing my EFX/RMX-1000 through the 4th channel on the Xone:92 but still can be a bit to get my head around, so would also like to use a Allen & Heath PX5 but it's a shame that mixer only has the 3 band EQ, A&H ABSOLUTLY missed a trick with that one.
    If anyone in Newcastle has a DB4, DJM-v10, Model1 or 1.4 & is willing to give me an hour on them..............

  • @AT-wl9yq
    @AT-wl9yq ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Given all that you are getting with this mixer, the price is very fair. High quality parts cost more but make a big difference. Just as an example, volume pots are critical for sound quality. Cheap pots degrade the signal. A good volume pot from a really good company like Alps, can cost over $50 each. (And that's a wholesale price to a manufacturer.). Obviously, they can't use $50 pots on everything or the mixer would sell for a lot more money, but they most likely used pots that cost about $10-$15. That alone is a lot of money, and you're just getting started.

    looks cool and i'd love to hear it at some point but in terms of flexibility i feel like the lack of a high EQ could be a nightmare for improv sets and restrict your track selection during set planning. in my library there are a lot of good (lossless!) tunes that simply need a bit of highs adjustment, either because the master mix was dull from the start or the vinyl rip was from an old record or the highs are just too sharp when making a long blend between tracks (i'm mixing jungle and drum and bass mostly where you really have to be careful not to overload the frequencies and create painful high clashes of hi-hats etc).
    so yeah i don't think this mixer would be for me, even if i could justify the price. i just feel like you have to have an incredibly high-quality music library and weed out anything that doesn't have balanced highs.

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq ปีที่แล้ว

      Lossless is definitely the best way to go, and you shouldn't have any more problems than you do with something like an MP-3. The issues you mention are almost certainly do to something else. When you rip vinyl use a regular phono cart and not a DJ cart. DJ carts are not meant for sound quality. Its a special application product. No need to get anything really expensive. A $100-$200 MM cart is all you need.
      "have to be careful not to overload the frequencies and create painful high clashes of hi-hats etc"
      That shouldn't happen either. Properly setting your gain structure should eliminate the issue. What you need to do is look at the entire signal path and make note of every "volume" or level type of control. For example, trim, channel faders, preamp volume, etc... Anything that controls the signal level. Once you list them all, go through each one and determine if its a volume control or a gain control. There's a big difference. Gain controls are on the input of a component and volume controls are on the output of a component. Gain controls can distort/overload the signal, and volume controls can't. Ignore volume controls and set your gains first. Once you have the gains set properly, you can't distort the signal. Then you use volume controls to adjust loudness.
      One thing DJ's are always worried about is red lining the signal. (And you should be concerned.). However, if you have your gain structure set correctly and you start to red line when you raise your volume controls, its perfectly fine. Red lining is only a problem if its from too much gain. So, don't worry about overdriving the signal from volume.

      1. you can't get everything in lossless and bad masters exist.
      2. you can't use volume alone for all transitions and for double-drops (in the case of D&B) it certainly never works. if clashing basslines exist, so do clashing mids and highs. if you play two neuro tracks on top of each other, there's a high chance you'll have way too loud highs unless you use the EQ. you can easily see how strong this effect is by recording a D&B double-drop with a lot of headroom and looking at the waveform.

    It’s unfortunate for union audio to be ready for production during the current economic situation. A £5500 mixer is something not everyone can afford that easy, like you say they weren’t targeting a price range market. Thanks for the review, but I find this mixer very limited. Have tried the V6 a couple of times, and loved the smooth blending/transitions, pretty unique. But the 2 extra isolators were a must for EQ. Not every record sounds the same, some need EQ adjustment, and not every track mixed in has to come with the highs/meds. This Orbit6 mixer does not allow to come in with just the kick. I would still spend my money on a Alpha Recording System mixer rather than this one.

    It uses SMD capacitors that don't last long. SMDs cost much less than old school hi-end passive components, so the companies that are using SMDs have a much higher profit margin, SMDs are very good for quick manufacturing i.e. less labor cost. The quality of sound is a very subjective matter.
