just one of the most heartbreaking moments in piano literature

- Piece: Mieczysław Weinberg's Piano Sonata n°4 in B minor, op. 56
Performer: Yulianna Avdeeva, maybe one of my top 3 favourite pianists, in a concert at the Chopin Institute.
Weinberg (1919-1996) was a Polish composer who cultivated a deep friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich. His prolific work, which I highly encourage you check out, includes 21 symphonies, 6 piano sonatas, concertos (for violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet...) and a lot of chamber music including sonatas for solo instruments (violin, viola, double bass, bassoon... !). Despite his influence at his time, Weinberg still suffers from insufficient attention today, so I thank performers like Avdeeva and Gilels who have managed to bring him to the stage as part of their recitals. Definitely check out the rest of this amazing sonata (and particularly Avdeeva's live performance on YT!)

How devastatingly she voices the anguish of this music! And how she sustains a fierce concentration so that the listener cannot "look away" even for a moment. I am still shaken by listening to this astonishing musician!
Absolutely agree. I discovered Avdeeva through her performance of Chopin’s Fourth Ballade (Chopin Competition) and have fallen in love with her playing since. She also does a great job at bringing these more obscure works by Weinberg, Spilzman etc. to the attention of the general public!
i was pretty much devastated when she made that HORRIBLE note mistake by accidentally playing that C note over that Bm chord. But only musicians with an ear probably noticed.
@@infamouslyfamous2134 Gosh! I'd love to be a musician!! Is it hard?
@@ProfRonanMC not if yu love music
Unnn no. I guess youre not a musician. You didn't catch that horrible note mistake she plays. I know a million pianists that would play this better with NO note mistakes
Odysseus, thanks for bringing attention to this work, and also to Avdeeva. She's on my top 1 list. Her playing is beauty incarnate.
I'm not particularly moved by this, but to each their own
i was pretty much devastated when she made that HORRIBLE note mistake by accidentally playing that C note over that Bm chord. But only musicians with an ear probably noticed. plus the piece itself kinda sucks.
I am never moved by crap, never!
@@infamouslyfamous2134tell me where that happened? Couldn’t spot it!
Wonderful playing. Congratulations on such a great interpretation.
Beautiful and heavenly !
😮Thank you. I'm looking forward to listening to more of his work.
Avdeeva really is one of the most commnicative, controlled artists out there . I hope she comes to Miami. Her ability to play pp and have so many types of attacka and touches amaze me everytime I hear her it's a deep experience ! I commend her for learning AND programming Weinberg's music. He is getting more attention recently . This excerpt didn't mean lots to me but the playing and utter concentration of this important pianist tells me the entire Sonata is well worth hearing ! I hope she will record it on harmonia mundi who she has worked with bfeore !
stunning....so moving
Never heard of this composer. Thanks for the introduction.
In my opinion these kind of shorts don't lead to real music experience, because composer built a sctructure, a flow to this exact moment and it should be exactly like that. I am a big piano music lover, i find a lot of works really touching - but this moment doesn't work (for me) outsite the context.
it doesn’t match the full experience, but this is also exposure of this work to 39,000 people who likely never would have sought it out otherwise, and many of those will seek out the full work after this
@@sloppysorabji pretty much 🙂
It’s rare for something like this being recommended 💕
Incredible acoustics.
Why is Chris evans on the hastags lmao??
Edit: he removed it :(
He needs to see this, its so emotional 😭
@Einekleine why are you crying about it
Hahaha oops, copied the tags from another classical music video and did not see Chris Evans in there 😂 That said, I’d love to see a Chris Evans fan stumble upon an obscure classical piano video - and hopefully enjoy it :))
Because he drinks Bud Light.
@@jessevallejo8797 at least he didn't get indicted like Trump
Yulianna being fantastic as always 👍
She did a wonderful job with this.

One good example of the saying "Music is in the silence in between notes"
Very, very beautifully played. And a very good piece!
Thnaks for the upload but if that is an example of what he produced I shan't bother spending further time searching for more.
wow
The venue is the Polish National Philharmonic hall in Warsaw.
Belíssima interpretação!
I’m not familiar with this work. It’s quite beautiful!
21 Symphonys? I haver not time ..
really beautiful, her hands look pretty small and im wondering how she manages to reach those tenths
She arpeggiates them.
There are special exercises to stretch fingers.
@@mrsnegy6001 Try telling that to Schumann.
@@michaeledwards1172 Hmm.... I will....:)
@@mrsnegy6001 Okay... I was trying to express doubts, in a slightly joking manner, about stretching exercises, comparing them to the method (whose exact nature I'm uncertain of) Schumann used to try to strengthen his weaker fingers, but ended up damaging his hands sufficiently as to rule out a concert performing career. And, in a perverse way, perhaps we can thank that unfortunate accident for the fact that Schumann left the world so much wonderful music he may never have written if he had been able to follow his original plan focusing on performing rather than composition.
But seriously, I am curious as to which stretching exercises you are referring to. I have often wanted to increase my stretch, but had doubts as to whether this was even possible - safely, at least. And I do have Schumann's fate in mind. But which stretching exercises were you refering to?
i thought this was uninspired, glad i came to the comments to know im not alone! great pianist but what an underwhelming composition
I'd never heard of this composer but this music sounds Jewish to me, so I looked him up. Yep.
If you say so!
Wow! this is pure perfection
There are 3 composers you forgot to hashtag in the description, though. :) including me #abighairyspider
its not how she plays, but this piece just does nothing to me. It sounds lovely, but not heartbreaking at all
is this how my friends feel when I show them pieces I weep to?
I agree. This composition isn't very good
When it finished, I got up and threw away my digitalis.
Cierto.
Yep. Too many unmotivated shifts. Everyone try Händel, Largo insted.
The great composers of yesteryears knew how to write melody happy or sad etc. Modern composers rarely write melody. It is mostly boring and full of unending despair. They have no answers to life. Modern music like everything else in the world today is empty Godless and ugly noise. I have listened to classical music all my life, The music and person of Alma Deutcher and her philosophy of music is refreshing. I will never listen to ugly no matter how good the musician. I want to be blessed in my listening, not tangled up in note gymnastics that no one enjoys. God makes music and more often modern man ruins it. Cecilia Bartoli wow. Nuria Rial wow. Luigi Rossi wow. Philippe Jaroussky wow. So much beauty. Why do so many reject it. Beauty is NOT in the ear of the beholder. There is a universal absolute in all beauty, Christ Himself. Bach knew that.
reminds me of Shostakovich...sadness of wars...
1:57 this section reminds me of Don't cry for me Argentina
i didn't feel anything at all. I don't understand
You have to wonder why someone would bother learning this.
No
why would they call this heartbreaking? did they mean the mediocre composition?
👍
IMo it’s a random improvisation of extremely disorganised musical thoughts, written down and played with wayyyyy too much profundity.
I totally agree
Bien dicho👏👏👏
Mediocre music, fantastic playing
...that's why it's never performed 😂
Not as good/sad as the Chopin Eminor prelude or the Bach B flat minor prelude!!
"Polish composer"?)) - maybe great Soviet composer, that was born in Russian Empire jewish family (migrated from Kishenev until his born) and 1939 until to death in 1996 leaving in Soviet country (work in soviet culture) than Russia, died in Moscow. Maybe Rachmaninov great tatarian composer, also?))) Удивительно, почему же "польский композитор", не вернулся ни в коммунистическую Польшу, ни эмигрировал с еврейской волной 70-х, ни после распада СССР. А жил в стране где был репрессирован, помимо прочего.
Screw the Russian empire! Invaded so many countries when they had no business doing so! Made so many people suffer, and give up their religion and identity! Communists, what do you expect!
She's good, but the piece itself has a boring line, nothing compared to the great piano works of composers such as Rachmaninovv or Chopin
i was thinking the same thing. out of all the great piano works that bring me to tears, this piece does nothing to me
Bof!.
i was pretty much devastated when she made that HORRIBLE note mistake by accidentally playing that C note over that Bm chord. But only musicians with an ear probably noticed.
AHA! That was a heartbreaking thing about this.
Im not moved. Rather extremely boring piece. Im moved by rachmaninoff concertos
👍
Ahahahahaha I swear I did the same exactly comment before reading yours
@@marcellocacciatore5927 :)))
Classic mistake made by modern musician: assuming if YOU feel it the AUDIENCE feels it. I've been hearing that nonsense since the 70's. Your job as a musician is to MAKE the audience feel it, not to self-indulgently feel it yourself. Whatever happened to musicianship? Not impressed.
For me it is just fake. It is not dramatic at all. It is weak and pretentious.👎🤢👎🤢👎🤢
THANK YOU! And the title of the video trying desperately to built up this work 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ok so what would you say are the most heartbreaking pieces?
Same. I don't get it. If others understand the piece, it's all good for them...
For me, I'll give it a pass, nothing there is heartbreaking at all for me.
@@mazeppa1231 maybe because your heart is already broken
@@snarf1504 The Adagio assai from Ravel's Piano Concerto in G? That opening. OMG. The Weinberg is OK, but labelling anything "The Most..." is bound to stir up the bees nest. 🙂
Jesus is coming Repent everyone in sin will burn
Much better than that naked Yuja Wang, Yulianna Avdeeva is the best dressed pianist I've ever seen, and she seems like an extremely kind and funny person in the videos she talks about, besides being extremely generous with what she did with a student in a master class in Brazil. She is wonderful and tremendous musician!
😂 I call it crap and quickly run away
from that kind of untalented tohuwabohu
bruh
💀💀💀
no one asked your opinion on how pianists choose to dress. they do not dress for you.
it's also funny to notice that in your profile photo you look actually rather ridiculously dressed, so your opinion on other people's dressing shouldn't count that much.
