Every sound he produces is filled with warmth and tenderness, which are expressedby this Ballade at an ultimate level. I cannot stop liking him as a pianist.
I don't think anyone has ever encapsulated all that is special about this piece so perfectly. He just nails everything. Pacing, phrasing, projection of melodies, highlighting of inner-voices, striking the balance of restraint and showmanship. Every section is masterfully set up. Never thought I'd say it but I prefer this interpretation over Zimerman who, to me anyway, is the standard bearer of modern Chopin interpretation.
his technique is extremely mastered and he has been the peak of piano technique for some decades, just less well known in the past (but comparable) since he lacked profession in musicality. Glad to see such a stunning ballade come out of him today 😎😎
+Carl Hopkinson Since I know he will not make an audible error in this Ballade, I paid special interest in his poetry and musicality. I think he was fantastic. I do look forward to what he can do with the 1st or 4th Ballade which are among the repertoire he can choose from in the next round. I love the 1st and the 4th. He is one of the contestants I will pay attention to make the final round.
+rishl6 Yeah, that (in)famous and *treacherously* difficult (though seemingly innocuous) passage in the left hand where that 4th finger has to wend its way and hit the G key but lands more often than not on that *G-flat* key... Problem is you're playing Eb3-C4-Eb4 and then Eb3-*G3*-Db4-Eb4 as 16th note to 8th note - without the ''help'' of the 3rd finger hitting the Ab3 key (''tripling'' of the tonic is a big no-no here, in accordance with classical ''rules'' which prevailed throughout the whole Common Practice Period). ''Pretty major error'' may be a bit strong here - I've heard worse during my career. ... ''Among the best and cleanest performances I have listened to'' - Couldn't agree more.
In my experience, a smaller 4th finger might indeed ''help'' (not smaller hands, for obvious reasons). Technically speaking, I routinely tell my students to move their left hand as swiftly and as close to the keyboard as possible from the Eb octave, second beat, to the Eb3-C4-Eb4 chord - making sure that 4th finger is correctly positioned for the next chord.
Yes, if I had to choose ONE of the humdreds I've heard THIS would HAVE to be THE most satisfying rendition of this almost-too-popular Chopin piece. Just GLORIOUS playing.
Tout simplement la plus belle interprétation de la 3ème Ballade que j'ai entendu, avec celle de Zimmerman. Beaucoup de nuances, une force d'exécution remarquable. Bravo !
Your relation with the piano is unique, at the greatest one could have ever imagined. Bravissimo Charles. Anxious to see you back to Québec City, at the Palais Montcalm. Take good care and best of luck.
No. Too much rubato as well. I admire any musician who plays this work, but this is not a *great interpretation* and I say that apologetically. 'People' are way too quick to anoint. Way too quick. How many here have listened to Horowitz' interpretation of this ballade? Might not be a bad idea. If a contemporary is a fairer comparison, listen to Yundi Li.
mastering chopin is the pinnacle of piano playing in my opinion. this is my favorite ballade and I feel he does it justice. his ranges of emotions, tones and colors make his interpretation memorable. the only thing i didn't like about this performance was his banging at 5:30 - 5:41
Come on, Steinway would pay him MORE money than Yamaha would to play their piano. Steinway has a reputation for having their goons intercept players getting ready to play on other pianos and paying them to reconsider. Yamaha does not have that reputation to my knowledge. Moreover, if you look at the careers of other pianists (for example Oscar Peterson who greatly favored the Bosendorfer, and Richter who switched to Yamaha later in their career) there are other reasons to choose a Yamaha. I have no idea why Richter did; for Oscar, I suppose he was settling when they couldn't dig up a Bosendorfer for him. If you follow the competition closely, a number of pianists are favoring the Yamaha CFX and it's no wonder why; having played several Steinway Ds and Yamaha CFX grands within the last 5 years, they are both excellent pianos. But the Yamaha is just different enough to be really refreshing and exciting. The Steinway is boring when you consider how disseminated their concert grands are and how similar they all are.
@Argerich's almighty squeak Those new Yamahas are top-notch, much different approach from previous models. No wonder why its the choice of 5 from the 6 finalists of the 2015's edition, as well as Avdeeva's choice back in 2010.
Richard-Hamelin ist neben Sokolov der beste Pianist! Warum?
Literally every video of Chopin's music: HaVe yOu EvEr HeARd KrYstIan ZiMmERmANn PlAYiNg ThIs? Yeah, most likely everybody did, because the guy is the most well- known Chopin interpreter of the modern era. But some people talks like no one comes even close to him, and that's not true at all. Charles-Richard Hamelin is in the top 5 most underrated pianists. His ability to be extremely lyrical with these pieces is amazing.
I know. What're the others?
Yes what are the others
@Toby the Lion lmao true yundi is so underated
@@ohk3963 yundi is kind of overrated now, his piano technique has significantly decreased the past 6 years, he peaked like 2005
@@samgwon4606 totally agreed but his ballades at 2016 are pretty good

Guiomar Novaes owns this pieces, nothing left to say after listening to it.
Very stylish and clean, but I wouldn't mind some spiciness 'Zimerman style' and more dynamic contrasts.
@Juan Ramon Silva Parra agree
It's literally perfect! Every note is played with good sound and extremelly clear. My favourite performance :)
His musicality at 5:22 onward is one I've never seen anything like before, pretty unique and expressive.
GREAT. Extremely rewarding to hear. Bravo!

this must be one of the best performances of this ballade! the sound is so clear and wonderful :)
Now THAT was pure perfection, outstanding rubato from beginning to end!!!! Brilliant!!!! I hope you’ve watched this Lang Lang!!!!!
5:43 OK THEN.
This ballade always came in behind 1 and 4 in my affections, but CRH is making me reconsider. This is just gorgeous.
I believe that the Ballades are Chopin's most mature pices and they should be performed that way as well. Charles here did a great job in doing that.

His pedaling on Coda is Insane! Deep but light and clean

Omg what a performance!!!
Pure music, pure art. No showmanship. 🧡
My goodness, I'm glad I remembered this is one of the interpretations of the Ballade no. 3 that I love the most, along with Moravec's and Zimerman's.
I respect your rendition
Came here from Lang Lang' s performance to cleanse my ears.

Fantastic playing his sonata is insane too, scary technique
I love Ballade 3 I was attracted to nice soft and dynamic his sound😊🎹🎶🎉

Very beautiful
Why, he is a big guy. I could see him playing football, or doing construction. But he does play the piano very prettily.
sublime! noblesse!

Maybe only those who have played this can appreciate this fully.
Noah, do you play it? If so how long did it take you? And lastly is it hard?
I play it over and over and over.
his 4 ballades are not hard, a bit harder than nocturnes but easier than etudes and fantasie
+Ridge Zhang you mean like for chopin himself?
Ridge Zhang the 4th ballade is much harder than all the prelude and most of the etude imo
5:27 phenomenal!
very nice, long phrases! super impressed
Thank you very much I'm practicing the same song. I really need your advice.
