Fantastic repair on the 221 Rio Grande Alco Jeremy. I think you have it running better than it was when it was new! Thanks for pointing out the differences between the various Alco's that Lionel produced. Good information to know for those of us on the lookout for reasonably priced engines.
Great job again Jeremy! You saved another locomotive from being a shelf queen. I thought it was done when that commutator plate came off, but you were able to get it back on and running again. Outstanding! Tom

Yeah I'm in California and shipping is very expensive, I purchased two bulbs for my engines which was $5.00 and the shipping was $6.50 from the Midwest, but not no more will I purchase from a supplier in the Midwest and they the supplier is quick to tell you it was COVID and I ask them WHAT THE HELL , DID THE PART CATCH COVID TOO!SO THEY HAVE TO SHIP IT A SPECIAL WAY? 😂😂😂

that broken commutator problem was also a thing in the HO Lionels.... unfortunately, on mine all three broke off and I have no way to realign them. Otherwise looks like another good running engine.
2:58 Are the couplers on these ever spring-loaded? I need a coupler for my 1055 Texas Special. The coupler on Trainz doesn't seem to include the spring but there's one on eBay with it.

Marx guy here, that 221 is a very versatile little loc. and easy to upgrade to your desires. I do that all the time to my vintage Marx Tin.

I also have the “triple deuce” Rio Grande ALCO. It is the ultimate gutless wonder. 2wd, no reverse, no bell, no horn, no traction.
I read that there was a variation on the 222 that was really cut down. Didn't know about the lack of a traction tire though.

So there is a centering spring. The newer springs are a bit too light in my opinion. The spring number is 222-130
