Contrast that with the B-52 Stratofortress which had all of the guns except for the tail removed and replaced by a whoppin 30 *tons* of bombs (or, alternatively, 20 nuclear missiles). But admittedly, it would make managing the crew a bit less entertaining.

The reason you don't have to reload in this DLC is that the B-17 provided ammunition boxes for each gunner, whereas the Lancaster (which is what you fly in the vanilla game) had one big ammo stockpile in the middle of the fuselage. If you look closely in the interior view of the B-17, you can actually see the individual ammo boxes and their itty-bitty little feed chutes.

I like this little detail. I love when games use real life details to justify new gameplay rules.
Also worth noting that there were autoloader upgrades available on certain guns in the Lancaster in-game (not sure how historically accurate those are).
John, the USAAF doesn't stand for United States of America Airforce, it stands for United States Army Air Force.

It should be said that, with this being set during WW2, USAAF stands for United States Army Air Force. The USA didn't have a separate air force until after the war when USAF was created...

The name "The American Jawwwn" perfectly captures the strange variant of cringe that makes this channel hilarious.
The exact reason the B-17 was named the 'Flying Fortress' was because when it was shown off to the press one of them named it so on account of all the guns the plane had sticking out of it. I love that Jon is channeling that observation.
Hey Jon, you do know the bombadiers secondary job was to man one or both of the cheek guns. Later models added two more crew members to take those guns as the bombadier was given a "chin" turret to man.

Seems like playing this off a controller would be a bit clunky... Also, why not move your bomber to one of the cheek guns, then move him to the bombing position only when you need to actually photo or bomb something? It would mean you could leave Edwards where he is at mission start....

So basically every turret now has an ammo feed which was the upgrade you saved up so long for in the original game (and ignored the more damage varriants)
Jon, maybe next time train the bomber as a gunner, that way you can let your engineer do his job. At the end there, you had 2 failed systems and your outer starboard engine was flashing red. But I have to admit that your reaction of your engine falling off would have gave me no end to laughter. So you be you, and don't ever change, and perception be damned.
would you like some ww2 trivia? american strategy against luftwaffe was to use bombers as bait to draw out luftwaffe fighters so allied fighters could take them out, so extra tanky bombers we used. the end result was the obliteration of luftwaffe fighters en-mass. british bombing missions were to to damage, americans treated the actual destruction of the bombing target as a secondary - destroying luftwaffe fighters came first, american fighters that escorted bombers were given orders along those lines - kill fighters, the bombers take care of themselves (not really, they got clobbered, but like i have been saying, that was kinda the point...)

You don't have to get new ammo because the guns have ammo feeds. You can get ammo feed guns in the main campaign to, they're just a generation lower than the guns you could otherwise have.

The later variants (specifically the B-17G) did. The earlier ones had less.
The B-29 Superfortress on the other hand...
I want this multiplayer, imagine fifty or sixty bombers, you could flatten Dresden.
So glad this is out. I remember one time after rhe game released on Xbox I was like 30 missions in, shit was going wrong. Low as fuck on fuel even though I had Lean active throughout the mission, 2 crewman shot to shit, and then the right engine went out and caught fire (which was lovely since there was PIECES MISSING FROM THE DAMN PLANE ALREADY!!!) so I sent my badass engineer out on the wing to fix it and while he was out there a massive wave of fighters and an Ace appeared and starting ripping into us, and I told the pilot to do a corkscrew to throw them off. Looked to the engineer station to send him to fix the damaged oxygen and his chair was empty. I HAD FORGOTTEN HE WAS STILL ON THE FUCKING WING! Somehow he had managed to extinguish the fire and get that engine going again befire he fell and his sacrifice saved the rest of the crewmen on board to safely limp home to base. RIP Engineer Rogers.

CR.42's at a guess. Jon kept shooting them down before I could get a good look at them.
Not completely sure the CR.42 had the performance to play with the B-17 - certainly lacked the firepower - but given the VERY loose historical accuracy in this series it is a rather nice touch.
Italy was too busy with words at that point in the war. I still think they are stretching it a bit but I'll go with it.

Italy was still in the game at this point in the war - The Allies haven't even invaded Sicily yet.
I'd love to see Jon play through the whole game, especially if he spends some time away from YT learning the game (don't get me wrong - I realise he's a busy guy, but it seems like he enjoys this one enough to get good at it)
YES! I was hoping this would get a video. I'm really divided on buying this. Hopefully this pushes me one way or the other.
Edit: As of writing this I now own the USAAF DLC.
The game is pretty amazing. I'm not a PC gamer and it runs perfectly on my laptop.

Buy it right now, it has a huge sale and is a very fun little game, if a bit difficult
the gun auto reload is an upgrade in the base game which says "ammo feed" but it does take a bit to reach them

Yup. Jon buy machine guns for the two cheek positions, then never assigns his bombardier to either of them despite the fact he has no more bombs to drop. It was a good plan until it wasn't.

One suggestion I have is when you get to the mission area to pull your navigater off of his post to man one of the guns and then putting him back on after your done with the objective
Jon, the ammo thing wasn't a change. It's just that this plane comes with the ammo feeder upgrade.
If I recall correctly, unlimited ammo turrets were in the base game too, as upgrades.

Wikipedia tells me that the USAAF came into being in June 1941, the US didn't join WWII until December 1941

@@jonathanbutler4124 I stand corrected. It was still a branch of the Army, but it was only informally called the USAAC. You learn something new everyday.
The US Air Force was not created as a seperate branch until 1947, but I always though USAAF was simply a mistake from someone who didn't know that history. Turns out I was the one misinformed. Thanks for the correction!
@@bigbil96 Yes the development in how the air forces were managed seems to be very interesting from briefly reading about it, but also somewhat confusing. You have the development in ideas about how the air force should be organised in the period, with changes in name and the nominal responsibilities of the different iterations, and then the heavily related but separate development in how the air forces actually operated, that didn't necessarily match up to the nominal structure. An interesting bit of history - thanks for prompting me to read about it.

I think it's going to need to ramp up the difficulty quick. Four twin .303s (ignore the fact that was a British cartridge and it would be .30 cals) and two single guns, plus them already default equivalent to Mk 3 w/ ammo feed in the base game...

So, little historical trivia: The Graf Zeppelin was an actual german aircraft carrier based on the IJN carrier Akagi and was around 94% finished before the Third Reich fell and she was scrapped.

I played for 12 hours before giving up. I LOVE the graphics and idea. The controls are needlessly frustrating. Clicking on people, stations, etc... All difficult as the view changes while you're playing. I might try it again to see if things have changed since I last tried it in June.

If the target is in your crosshairs when you release. You have missed your target. It is a realistic take on bombing runs.

Why not move the bomb bay guy to a turret until you're near target? Or at the very least, after you've expended all your payload. Extra pair of hands that aren't being put to use.

Lets put it this way Americans still use the A10 warthog assault bomber. Basically a tank which can fly. It has missiles designed to destroy heavy tanks and probably one of the largest autocannons in service the GAU-8 avenger. This gun fires 30mm depleted uranium rounds at a rate of 4000 rounds per minute. case and point the gun fires so fast that it can only be fired in short-bursts or else the force of the recoil will slow the plane down and eventually cause it to fly backwards.

@@thecbrndude6208 well technically it's an assault craft used for ground support. Really they should just classify it as a flying tank because that's pretty much what it is. They literally built the plane around the gun.
Yeah, I know. Just the way you classified it threw me off a tad. The bastards flying those things can sneak up on damn near anything, too, including OUR guys.
It works off the philosophy that air superiority means the war is won. The A-10 is an ugly bastard to be sure, but nothing is more effective at pounding an enemy so far into the ground that you need to dig him up before you can give him a burial. I exaggerate of course, but it is still one of the best weapons platforms to ever grace the sky.

The reason the American bombers have more guns is because it needs to work more independently. With that much firepower it does not need too many fighter support.
Bullshit. Your train of thought is the same idea that got B-17s (quite literally) ripped to shreds by German FW-190s. The only strategy that saved B-17s was sending P-51D escorts into combat ahead of the bombers to clear a path.

Wilson The Ball you’re both right in a sense. There was very little solidarity between bombers and fighters in the early days of the Air Force. The best way for a fighter jock to get promoted was to get kills under his belt, so fighters would constantly abandon the planes they were supposed to protect in order to get kills. The reason American bombers evolved in such a way to have such heavy focus on defensive firepower is that they couldn’t rely on their escort to do their damn jobs. Until the Tuskegee Airmen made a name for themselves by having so many of their protectees survive and protecting bombers became enforced practice, bombers were on their own. Because of the sheer amount of daka attached to each bomber, the bomb groups became a formidable threat once the fighters stayed with them. It established defense in depth that made it so the enemies who slipped through the fighter screen were targeted and summarily shredded. So you both are right. The bombers could survive without fighter support because they were built to do such. However, even with all those guns, they were vulnerable to enemies and did much better with support.
