In 1978 my mom gave me a NASB '77. I was 15 years old. I put down my KJV and started using and memorizing from the NASB '77 through Christian High School, then Bible College and seminary. Then soon after the NASB '95 came out I swithched to the NASB '95. And I used the NASB '95 until the LSB came out. Now I switch between the NASB '95 and LSB on a daily basis and also use those two translations on my TH-cam Channel. Yes! Read the NASB '77. I think it will be rewarding to you. And I think it will be a blessing to you. Blessings to you brother.
When my grandma died I asked for her Bible. To my surprise it is a 77 NASB. Her writing and underlining are throughout, and there are 2 ribbons whose ends are frayed by her fingers. Absolutely wonderful inheritance!
Recently picked up a copy of 2020 nasb in a bookstore. Personal opinion,not bad, however main bible study and / or general reading bible I’ve really preferred for several years are my Thompson Chain Reference or open bibles both 1977 editions . The flow of the text and readability of the 1977 just a good fit.
Yes, but I don't recommend the version you're holding as the book introductions in it are sadly historical-critical (unless I'm mistaken) and I like the commentaries in my Bibles to be more faithful. That said, I held off buying a NASB at first as I thought the ESV satisfied my needs for a literal translation, but I finally caved and got the NASB 1977 thompson chain reference when it was on sale. And oh boy, was I blown-away at how beautiful the translation is! I did not expect that to be honest. I especially love the use of Thou/Thee/Thy when addressing the Lord, it just feels right. So I highly recommend the NASB 1977.
I just got my own NASB ‘77 last week. I’d been wanting a Thompson chain bible, and saw that they have the 1977 still in print, so I grabbed a bonded leather one for something like $21.
I have the NASB 1977 in the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible and in the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, both bought recently (this year). The most obvious difference is the Old English "Thee" and "Thou" when addressing or referring to Deity. I do have several 1995 NASBs, but I tend to like the 1977 a bit more. Charles Stanley used it, which is how I got on to it. No regrets. I would say read it, compare it to the 1995 version if you like.
I was able to get a couple of NASB '77 from my late great father-in-law. He was Southern Baptist pastor in the small towns of Central Wyoming. He was a great Greek scholar and this edition was his absolute favorite. I read some of this translation, and I highly recommend you give it a go.
I have read the book of Romans, the epistles of John, and various other sections of the Bible in the NASB77 and it is a beautiful, regal read. Romans is a literary masterpiece anyway and the 77 really showcases it well. To me, the NASB77 is like taking the NASB95 and the KJV and meshing the best attributes of both translations together. I really wish we had a premium option for the NASB77 as it is an often-neglected version that I think more people would like and appreciate if they knew how beautifully it reads. But again, this reflects my personal opinion and experience.
@pixel7038 I hope you won it CHEAP... you can pick up a used NASB 1977... on E-bay,.. for close to 20 bucks... even in Genuine Leather... if you watch for people selling them.. I hope if you won the bid.. ( I assume it is over by now) and I hope it is in Genuine Leather...
This was the Bible we all used in college. It later proved its worth while studying Greek and Hebrew in seminary. It was almost invariably the closest to the original languages.
Yes. Yes. Yes... I know that others will disagree with me, that's just the nature of Bible lovers, but the 77 is to me the best NASB version of all time. I love the Elizabethan Thees and Thous in the prayers of the Old Testament and in Jesus's prayers, especially in John 17. Those of you who do not like the Elizabethan language will not like this translation. Otherwise, it reads similarly to the 95 and the LSB.
I bought a used 1970s NASB77 thinline edition by Lockman on eBay. The bonded leather cover is distressed, but in good condition. The text block and binding are excellent. The medium-weight font is easy to read. It rivals the ESV thinline in terms of portability and readability.
YES!!! I own the AMG '77 and the TCR.'77 When I got mine it was like Christmas time 😁. I had read the NASB'77 back in 92-93. I hope you like it as much as I do.
I bought a NASB Reference Edition in 1977 when I was 23 years old. I like it very much. I do have other translations I have read & others in line to be read. My goto Bible is NKJV. Read your NASB 77 Tim and & do a review. It will be worth it.
Please read it, Tim. My wife gave me one for Christmas back in '82. It was published by World, if my memory serves me correctly. For some it may sound like Yoda speak, but I fell in love with it. It is somewhat KJV sounding. And I love the Thees and Thous. It would be well worth your time. In fact, imo, they could have done without the '95, '20, and especially the LSB.
Hi Kirby! It is good to run into your name elsewhere. I too have a ‘77 -(Inductive Study Bible) from back in the ‘90s. It has a hard back cover and still in great condition. I actually refer back to it more than I do my fancy ‘95 edition and refuse to purchase an LSB (even though I love the look of its binding and page layout) because I find it sort of disrespectful in the casual way that it addresses God in the OT. I have always been more formal in the way that I address my elders. Anyway, it is almost time for me to head off to work. Take good care.

Hi, Tim, I’m very interested in your and other viewers’ thoughts. I ordered this edition, after Tim Frisch reviewed it a while back, to use as my formal equivalence translation for study. It was affordable, I love the large typeface at my age ☺️ and the NASB is new to me. I’m glad to have it but haven’t attempted a full read-through.
After Tim dashed my hopes of a modern premium edition of the 1977 NASB, I managed to snag a (hopefully) clean copy of the Topical Chain Study Bible in the ‘77 on eBay. Looking forward to its arrival next week!
Hi Pastor Tim. I have the Key Word NASB 77 and I love it. Should you read it? It’s mainly in the Psalms where it differs from the NASB 95 IMO as the Psalms are still in the “Thee”, “Thou” format - similar to the KJV. So perhaps it does not differ enough from the 95 to make reading it worthwhile especially as you’re also reading the KJV. 😊
@sandracoombs2255 I beg to differ with you regarding the differences between the 1977 and the 1995 renditions... here are at least some verses you should compare and see.. Luke 24:51 1 John 5:6-8 there are many many other differences...... but I think the fact that the 1977 rendition... fails to tell where Jesus went in Luke 24:51 is enough to make one a bit leery of it... the importance of Luke 24:51.. carries over into Acts 1:2... where Luke tells Theophilus that Luke has told him about Jesus ascension...NOT according to the NASB 1977 ....he didn't.. this Might have been a 1977 translator error.. but if they erred in something as important as that verse... where else might there be errors..?

When I got saved in 1989 to me the 1977 NASB was/is the best translation out there for sure. I read it for about 7 years until the 95 version came out but I still read the 77 version in the Goatskin AMG Hebrew Greek Keyword Study Bible as well. Yes! Read the 77 version and you will love it and be blessed! Keep on Rockin brotha! 🎸
Yes! Please do. Would love to get your feedback on it. I enjoy the 77 personally. I like the unique feature of using thee's and thou's when one is addressing God in prayer. It doesn't use it throughout the entire Bible so it's not overwhelming in that aspect, but gives a nice, reverential feel.
I would give it a read through once. I prefer the 1995 for myself. I have a deacon who really likes the 1977. You could always have it rebound too make a more lasting Bible. Just my thoughts.
NASB 77 in some way kinda sounds like the NKJV I also love it like the NKJV updates the English but still holds a somewhat KJV style to it by leaving at times in the nasb 77 THEE THOUs
At age 16 I bought myself the NASB ‘71 (First Edition). While in seminary I was gifted an NASB ‘77 which I used in my early ministry years. Later I was given the NASB ‘95. I have recently bought myself the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) which I expect will be my primary Bible until the end of my days.
@donhagner4845 let me ask you since you have both the 1971 AND the 1977 translations... does the 1971 rendition... omit the same missing verses as does the ESV ..NIV...and RSV...?.. does the 1971 just SKIP over these verses as do those other translations I mentioned... or does the 1971 relegate.. these verses to notes.. that read ."see the footnote".. when these verses come up...?...because THAT is how the 1973 rendition does it.. I have read there were minor updates done in ALL of these years... 1973... 1977... 1985... 1995... 2020... everyone is aware of the 2020 updates from the 1995... but Not much is said regarding the updates between the earlier renditions..
Now that's a find! Far superior to my humble hardback editions of the NASB63 and '77. While my mother is a life-long AV/KJV Bible believer, my father was very much an Original Autograph Onlyist, preferring the RSV for general reading and the NASB for study, preaching and teaching. While I only use them for access to his notes and outlines, his '63 (his first study Bible given to him when he was 12) and '77 (his primary study Bible through the rest of his life after picking it up in the early '80s to replace his well-worn '63) are two of my most prized possessions (one of my brothers absconded with his RSV...). Seeing this video led me to pull them out just to see his handwritten notes and paper bookmarks once again. Even if I wasn't an RT Bible believer, I never could bring myself to read his copies for general reading purposes-they're very fragile and should be rebound if I were to put them to that use, but I'd never do that because it'd cause the loss of his notes written on the inside covers-if I were to read either the '63 or the '77, it'd have to be either of the relatively pristine copies that I have. You should already know enough about me from my previous comments here on your channel that I'd never recommend reading a critical text translation generally save for puposes of comparison, but if you do read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts in comparing it with the NASB95 (which I did read thru once before becoming a KJB believer) and the KJB in both source of texts and any textual notes, the general value of the introductions and commentary in your edition and the use of language where the RT and CT are the same.
I have that exact bible! I’ve read most of it, and really enjoyed it. To be fair I haven’t read the other NASB additions yet so I can’t say how it compares.
After a night of sleep, I got to thinking that I should mention that while I love my NASB 1977, there are times when the wording gets a little confusing and the sentence structure just doesn’t flow. I then reach for my Oxford Annotated NRSV.
I bought this same edition about three or four years ago. There are small differences here and there when compared with the 95 NASB and the LSB, but not very many, except as others have said the older English when prayer is quoted. (Which is one of the things I love not only about the 77 NAS, but also the RSV and NEB) Right now in the NASB line of Bible versions my favorites are the 77 and the 2020. I think the 77 is worth reading through. I love this edition by AMG! My only small gripe, and it's just a preference issue, is that I would have liked to see more footnotes. I think they have all the significant footnotes from the 77, but only in certain places. (As it is, I already feel that the footnotes in the NASB line are lacking) But that's a small issue lol, really great and quality edition of the NASB 77 still in print! God bless 🙏
@christophermorton7680 there are MANY differences between the 1995 and the 1977... but you just have not caught them yet... I think there are a few sites that might be able to share all of .. the changed verses... 2 verses I know of for sure... are Luke 24:51...and 1 John 5:6-8

@@christophermorton7680 well In that respect you are correct...I feel the NASB DOES stand out when compared to the other modern translations...I love the NASB95...and the NASB77 each for different reasons.. perhaps many of the same reasons that you have found between each... I have most recently been buying older renderings of the NASB... I Had a 1985 Open Bible rendition that I THOUGHT was the 1977 text.. but now I am not so sure...and I found a site that claimed the NASB omitted verses much like the NIV and ESV and RSV do.. but I had Not noticed that.. but then I realized that the NASB was updated several different times... it first was released in it's entirety in 1971.. and then updated in 1973...1977... 1985... 1995 and 2020.. I will probably Not purchase the 2020 rendition.. cuz I think making a bible gender neutral is overstepping. .but I DID notice that in the 1973.. those "missing verses".. are relegated to a footnote.. then beginning in 1977.. they included these verses in the text but bracketed.. I have a 1971 first edition coming to see.. if the footnote marking is NOT there.. in these verses... I am VERY curious to see what updates in the verses there are between the 1971 and the 1977 renderings... most people know about the changes between the NASB95 and 2020.. but these old versions it is hard to find much info about... also many times their prefaces are completely re written.. another thing I like to see.. is over the years,,, what new insights are shared in these prefaces and introductions...

The 77 NASB retains the old English pronouns when addressing Deity. In many ways it reads better than the 95 edition. I think you would benefit from reading it.
The '77 is one of my favorites because it retained the Elizabethan English in all the utterances and poetic passages. I prefer the '95 for actual studying of the scriptures because it is super literal straightforward language and I need that for formal study. But I absolutely love the hybrid approached used in the NASB1977! I have a hard copy and I read it on the kindle. If you don't mind it being a non-TR translation, I think NASB77 is slightly preferable to the NKJV because of the thees and thous.
Since you've already read the NASB95 and the RSV (which also has the divine-only thees and thines), I'd say it's not really necessary to read the 77. On the other hand, I also appreciate the nuggets you find in every version.
I have **some** experience with the NASB '77 has I have a Key Word Study Bible and another Bible (text only) and I really love it! It's my #2 favorite NASB (the '95 being the #1). I think there is also a '73, if I'm not wrong
@RobbieCupples If you wish to get technical... there is a 1971...1973....1977...1985...1995.....2020... rendition...of the NASB... and ALL are slightly different in their texts.. some have greater differences made in them than others...
It'd be interesting to see how it compares to later NASB versions, the LSB, and KJV. If you are short on time, maybe just read the Wisdom books. That seems to be where it differs from later updates the most anyway.
I have one of those. Bonded leather burgundy. Print is large but the formatting and font is old fashioned and not easily readable IMO. Lots of ghosting too. I had high hopes it would be a great rebind project but I am going to have to pass on doing that. It will be interesting to see what you think of it....
As you enjoy the pure poetry of God's word, I'm sure you'll love how the NASB 77 renders such throughout. The NASB was my first Bible that displayed caps pronouns of God, along with all caps for OT quotes in NT, made it easy to follow. Though, I still default to NKJV and BSB.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews Ok...Tim... you asked... so I will tell you what I have been experiencing... the first NASB I bought was about 3 years ago it was an NASB Open Bible rendition...copy right 1985.. but the text was from 1977... then I decided to purchase a used NASB 1995... edition... and I found hat in many verses these 2 are VASTLY different.... not just in regards to the thee's and thou's changes but also in regards to the text in many of the verses... between the 1077 and the 1995 renditions... there are so many variations between the two texts it would be too lengthy to try to list them all here... Two things I can share .. is for One... in the NASB 1977 Luke 24:51... does not state Jesus ascended... this was updated in the 1995 rendition... the NASB HAD to make this change... because in Acts 1:2 Luke mentions he had told Theophilus All... but omitting this from Luke 24:51..does Not correlate these two verses together... also 1 John 5:6-8.... are totally different.. in the 1977 rendition... it seems to follow the KJV rendering closer... and the 1995 rendering has this all changed... I would suggest you type in the differences on google to find a site that can list these differences off for you and this way you can print them off. .since there are SO many...

Has just a reference to the footnote in those places... but it does Not skip the verses like the ESV...RSV... and NIV's do... so Now I am in the process of purchasing a used 1971 copy... the First year the NASB complete was released to see.. if there is a difference between the 1973 and the 1971 renditions.. there is Not a lot of internet info about changes between these early renditions.... but there are pages listed regarding the changes between the 1977 and 1995 listed on the internet... as well as the changes from 1995 to 2020...but I am sure you are aware of a lot of the issues between the 2020... and 1995 already...
YES. As a nice, tiny reward: You’ll probably Love the Psalms with a bit of old English!🤓 (as well as words addressing deity). If they ever just update only the NKJV’s footnotes, that is what I’d Love for them to do: Make all the poetry worded like the KJV’s!😌✨ ENJOY. Trivia: Now I don’t/have’t watched The 700 Club, but they have had a first printing of the NASB 1977 Bible on their set since that same year!😁 (an old brown hardcover edition)
I can't comment on whether you should read it or not as I have one but have not read it. I use the NASB95 and CSB but refer to other translations for study, this being one of them. Mine is an old hardback Open Bible that I have no idea how to use properly, I just lookup verses sometimes.
read it, but first read the thomas nelson, kjv sovereign collection. Either leather, or one of the leathersoft ones, black, brown or purple, it doesnt matter because its the text that counts. i got purple because it was so much cheaper, but still same quality as the brown and black
AMG also publishes a KJV Bible that's identical to the NASB 77 except for the translation of course. They are a little harder to find but they are out there. When you read the NASB 77 have a KJV handy and read and compare the two. They aren't identical but they do have similarities.
Yes, I've read it. I was given one in 1993, and used it for street preaching and had read it cover to cover Ephesians 6:16 always amused me, so read that verse in the 77 and you'll see why. I actually bought a 95 but haven't read it cover to cover because they changed that verse! As well as took out the personal pronouns when referring to God. But yea, Ephesians 6:16 my man! And I recently acquired that very same AMG edition and have read through to Ephesians. Nearly to the end. The cover does begin to lay flat with use. I'm a KJV kind of guy, but this is one that I do have a soft spot for. Bless you
P.s. In some parts of this edition, spacing is cramped between words, and sometimes words are cut off and continued on the next line in an odd and not-too-grammatically-correct fashion, so it's not perfect, but it's still readable.
It’s different from the 95 and 2020 and has more of that classic KJV feel. If you like NKJV and KJV you might like the ‘77. Yes, I would love to know what you think as you didn’t love the LSB/2020 updates or think they were necessary. I would be curious 😁
i bought a used NASB 1977 about 6 years ago and I am very happy with it. It's my main bible.I have no desire to read the more modern versions with the gender adjustment crap. As far as I'm concerned, all of the updated versions of all the bibles have been made worse, not better.
I guess I am ignorant as to what the differences are from whatever people have now? I've never read the NASB. I do remember my pastor at the church where I got saved used to preach from it. But, hey, my view is, the more Bible, the better!
@Yesica1993 I have been studying different translations and renditions of these translations.. for a few years now.. and I can tell you first hand... that between the most popular translations.. the NIV...RSV...ESV...NASB...KJV...and NKJV.. there is a wide variety of difference... from what one can glean from the verses.. simply by the way they are worded.. surely.. a person can get saved by reading from any of them.. but.. if one is serious about their Christian walk.... and wishing to know the true God of the bible.. or in other words... what God wants each of us to know about Him... sometimes we need to discern what bible we are reading from.. I...myself am partial to the KJV... but I have often found where the message of the word is easier to understand in some of the other translations... sometimes.. it takes some cross referencing and comparison.. to truly get to the Word as God had intended... and this is due.. to the biases brought into the word by the translators..... I am sure that many of them leaned toward a certain point of vie even unconsciously ... but also some bibles have contradictions among their own text.. take the NASB for instance.. we all know that David slew Goliath correct?.. well.. we read about this in the NASB as well but later in 2 Samuel 21:19... we are told that Elhanan slew Goliath.. all within the same bible... then in Chronicles we are told the truth regarding who Elhanan... slew... it seems the translators erred in 2 Samuel 21:19 but this error is Not only found in the NASB.. I believe it is in the RSV and ESV as well..
Ha! For real. EDIT: But since it's Giant Print, it's for those with poorer vision. It makes sense to have that information right there for people, instead of having them go through the pages. (That's my guess.)
I would say no if you have read the NASB 95. However, I will tell you that I first began serious study of the bible using the NASB 77. I bought it when I was in high school. My first copy is a Moody Press thinline Calfskin and it has held up relatively well although the print is uncomfortable for me to read now, so I have several 95 editions in larger print. I have actually purchased the copy you are presenting so I can have one with a larger font. I don't know that there's a lot of difference except when the LORD is addressed. In the 77 Elizabethan pronouns are used, which may seem strange depending on your age, as for me, my parents and their generation always addressed the LORD with these pronouns so it seems respectful not archaic to me. I'm sure there are other differences, but not likely significant that I can remember. If you do choose to read it, I know you'll be blessed. Another side note, I consider the NKJV and ESV as my main bibles now.
I am not qualified to advise on whether you should read it as I haven't read it, but you do have a nice nearly text-only version there. Perhaps there is no reason to read it, but I see no reason why you can't either. At the end of the end of the day, you'll do what is right for you.
My advice is that you make one translation your Bible, but have your Greek text or computer study program open when you study. By the way I like the Blueletterbible program. The problem that the think I see the most is that teachers make Bible interpretations based on English words not the Greek words. The word see in John 1:18 differs from the word see John 5:19. We need to check the Greek text not another English translation.
@FrankO1000 I kind of agree with you.... I have often used an interlinear to cross reference the texts in the bibles I compare... but I DO keep coming back to this one thought... Is that how God.. planned for His word to be read?.. by having to use something to decipher what we are reading...? that is why even though I TOO, am guilty if resorting to reference to the original language of the word.. in my mind I am thinking.... God did not plan for His chosen ones to have to struggle so and to be so book heavy while getting to know Him more... Most times I just pray and meditate over a passage especially one in which the text differs across translations... and I just have to trust in the Holy Spirit to guide me into the truth of what God wants me to glean from the text... I am sure most average readers do not resort to reading the Original Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic, either..

Comparing the various translations on my desk is an exercise much like the party game - 4 to 5 people, a whispered message in the 1st person's ear, who whispers the message to the 2nd, 2nd to the 3rd, 3rd to the 4th who tells us what the original message was. Everyone knows that the message of the 4th person will be differrent from what was spoken to the 1st. That's why I chose a NASB because of it is literally and grammarically translated. BUT, but, even so I have to get past the tanslators' biased opinion of a text. They might not always be intellectually honest. That is why I usually check into definitions and grammar of the original texts. (The word "See" John 1:18 is different than "See" in John 5:19. Really different word and meaning.) For the average reader that you mentioned, who might not want to go through the effort of checking their translation, those who are the ministers of the gospel are under the burden of speaking accurately what God revealed. James 3:1- Do not become teachers in large numbers, my brothers, since you know that we who are teachers will incur a stricter judgment. (NASB)
@@FrankO1000 I agree with you 100%.... so many times I have ran into people on these sites.. that were raised in a church.. that had a preacher.. that was biased in their own opinions.. and DID NOT cross check translations.. and bring the people all the possible narratives of any particular verse so that the people themselves could ponder it as the Bereans did... and allow the Holy Spirit to lead them into all truths.. these so called preachers ..( and I have sat under a few).. pushed their own beliefs onto people as if they were totally accurate 100% of the time but they were Not... either because they read from wrong translations.. did Not.. cross reference.. or once believed somethin in error and never strived to gain a fuller knowledge of it.. the most recent experience I had was in the church I am now.. when our Sunday School class was going thru the book of 1 Thessalonians.. the teachers who met with the Pastor on Tuesday nights to go over the material.. had strict instructions NOT to get into any debates with anyone over the Rapture... a key part of 1 Thessalonians IMO.. why?.. because this Pastor did NOT believe there was going to be a Rapture... He believed falsely somehow.. that Christ was only coming ONCE more... and that would be at the end of the age... He could Not understand that technically during the Rapture.. Jesus is Not coming to the earth.. we will meet Him in the air.. so the Rapture cannot be classified.. as the Advent.. yet he thought the 2 were the same.. He is no longer our Pastor thank God... the elders of the church had finally had enough... about 80 people left the church.. I attend a Baptist church BTW... and for a Baptist to preach No Rapture.. is almost a sin.. AND this Pastor made it plain we would NOT convince him otherwise... I believe that Preaching the Scripture is a very important position.. those who preach or teach should NOT take it lightly AND they should be well versed... studying to show themselves approved..
In 1978 my mom gave me a NASB '77. I was 15 years old. I put down my KJV and started using and memorizing from the NASB '77 through Christian High School, then Bible College and seminary. Then soon after the NASB '95 came out I swithched to the NASB '95. And I used the NASB '95 until the LSB came out. Now I switch between the NASB '95 and LSB on a daily basis and also use those two translations on my TH-cam Channel.

When my grandma died I asked for her Bible. To my surprise it is a 77 NASB. Her writing and underlining are throughout, and there are 2 ribbons whose ends are frayed by her fingers. Absolutely wonderful inheritance!
Recently picked up a copy of 2020 nasb in a bookstore. Personal opinion,not bad, however main bible study and / or general reading bible I’ve really preferred for several years are my Thompson Chain Reference or open bibles both 1977 editions . The flow of the text and readability of the 1977 just a good fit.

Yes, but I don't recommend the version you're holding as the book introductions in it are sadly historical-critical (unless I'm mistaken) and I like the commentaries in my Bibles to be more faithful.
That said, I held off buying a NASB at first as I thought the ESV satisfied my needs for a literal translation, but I finally caved and got the NASB 1977 thompson chain reference when it was on sale. And oh boy, was I blown-away at how beautiful the translation is! I did not expect that to be honest. I especially love the use of Thou/Thee/Thy when addressing the Lord, it just feels right. So I highly recommend the NASB 1977.
I just got my own NASB ‘77 last week. I’d been wanting a Thompson chain bible, and saw that they have the 1977 still in print, so I grabbed a bonded leather one for something like $21.
I have the NASB 1977 in the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible and in the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, both bought recently (this year). The most obvious difference is the Old English "Thee" and "Thou" when addressing or referring to Deity. I do have several 1995 NASBs, but I tend to like the 1977 a bit more. Charles Stanley used it, which is how I got on to it. No regrets. I would say read it, compare it to the 1995 version if you like.

I was able to get a couple of NASB '77 from my late great father-in-law. He was Southern Baptist pastor in the small towns of Central Wyoming. He was a great Greek scholar and this edition was his absolute favorite. I read some of this translation, and I highly recommend you give it a go.
I have read the book of Romans, the epistles of John, and various other sections of the Bible in the NASB77 and it is a beautiful, regal read. Romans is a literary masterpiece anyway and the 77 really showcases it well. To me, the NASB77 is like taking the NASB95 and the KJV and meshing the best attributes of both translations together. I really wish we had a premium option for the NASB77 as it is an often-neglected version that I think more people would like and appreciate if they knew how beautifully it reads. But again, this reflects my personal opinion and experience.

This was the Bible we all used in college. It later proved its worth while studying Greek and Hebrew in seminary. It was almost invariably the closest to the original languages.

Yes. Yes. Yes... I know that others will disagree with me, that's just the nature of Bible lovers, but the 77 is to me the best NASB version of all time. I love the Elizabethan Thees and Thous in the prayers of the Old Testament and in Jesus's prayers, especially in John 17. Those of you who do not like the Elizabethan language will not like this translation. Otherwise, it reads similarly to the 95 and the LSB.
I bought a used 1970s NASB77 thinline edition by Lockman on eBay. The bonded leather cover is distressed, but in good condition. The text block and binding are excellent. The medium-weight font is easy to read. It rivals the ESV thinline in terms of portability and readability.
YES!!! I own the AMG '77 and the TCR.'77 When I got mine it was like Christmas time 😁. I had read the NASB'77 back in 92-93. I hope you like it as much as I do.
I bought a NASB Reference Edition in 1977 when I was 23 years old. I like it very much. I do have other translations I have read & others in line to be read. My goto Bible is NKJV. Read your NASB 77 Tim and & do a review. It will be worth it.

Please read it, Tim. My wife gave me one for Christmas back in '82. It was published by World, if my memory serves me correctly. For some it may sound like Yoda speak, but I fell in love with it. It is somewhat KJV sounding. And I love the Thees and Thous.

I too have a ‘77 -(Inductive Study Bible) from back in the ‘90s. It has a hard back cover and still in great condition.
I actually refer back to it more than I do my fancy ‘95 edition and refuse to purchase an LSB (even though I love the look of its binding and page layout) because I find it sort of disrespectful in the casual way that it addresses God in the OT. I have always been more formal in the way that I address my elders.

Hi, Tim, I’m very interested in your and other viewers’ thoughts. I ordered this edition, after Tim Frisch reviewed it a while back, to use as my formal equivalence translation for study. It was affordable, I love the large typeface at my age ☺️ and the NASB is new to me. I’m glad to have it but haven’t attempted a full read-through.
After Tim dashed my hopes of a modern premium edition of the 1977 NASB, I managed to snag a (hopefully) clean copy of the Topical Chain Study Bible in the ‘77 on eBay. Looking forward to its arrival next week!

It’s mainly in the Psalms where it differs from the NASB 95 IMO as the Psalms are still in the “Thee”, “Thou” format - similar to the KJV. So perhaps it does not differ enough from the 95 to make reading it worthwhile especially as you’re also reading the KJV. 😊

there are many many other differences...... but I think the fact that the 1977 rendition... fails to tell where Jesus went in Luke 24:51 is enough to make one a bit leery of it...
the importance of Luke 24:51.. carries over into Acts 1:2... where Luke tells Theophilus that Luke has told him about Jesus ascension...NOT according to the NASB 1977 ....he didn't..
this Might have been a 1977 translator error.. but if they erred in something as important as that verse... where else might there be errors..?

When I got saved in 1989 to me the 1977 NASB was/is the best translation out there for sure. I read it for about 7 years until the 95 version came out but I still read the 77 version in the Goatskin AMG Hebrew Greek Keyword Study Bible as well. Yes! Yes! Please do. Would love to get your feedback on it. I enjoy the 77 personally. I like the unique feature of using thee's and thou's when one is addressing God in prayer. It doesn't use it throughout the entire Bible so it's not overwhelming in that aspect, but gives a nice, reverential feel.
I would give it a read through once. I prefer the 1995 for myself.

You could always have it rebound too make a more lasting Bible.

At age 16 I bought myself the NASB ‘71 (First Edition). While in seminary I was gifted an NASB ‘77 which I used in my early ministry years. Later I was given the NASB ‘95. I have recently bought myself the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) which I expect will be my primary Bible until the end of my days.

let me ask you since you have both the 1971 AND the 1977 translations... does the 1971 rendition... omit the same missing verses as does the ESV ..NIV...and RSV...?..
does the 1971 just SKIP over these verses as do those other translations I mentioned...

everyone is aware of the 2020 updates from the 1995... but Not much is said regarding the updates between the earlier renditions..
Now that's a find! Far superior to my humble hardback editions of the NASB63 and '77. While my mother is a life-long AV/KJV Bible believer, my father was very much an Original Autograph Onlyist, preferring the RSV for general reading and the NASB for study, preaching and teaching. While I only use them for access to his notes and outlines, his '63 (his first study Bible given to him when he was 12) and '77 (his primary study Bible through the rest of his life after picking it up in the early '80s to replace his well-worn '63) are two of my most prized possessions (one of my brothers absconded with his RSV...). Seeing this video led me to pull them out just to see his handwritten notes and paper bookmarks once again. Even if I wasn't an RT Bible believer, I never could bring myself to read his copies for general reading purposes-they're very fragile and should be rebound if I were to put them to that use, but I'd never do that because it'd cause the loss of his notes written on the inside covers-if I were to read either the '63 or the '77, it'd have to be either of the relatively pristine copies that I have. You should already know enough about me from my previous comments here on your channel that I'd never recommend reading a critical text translation generally save for puposes of comparison, but if you do read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts in comparing it with the NASB95 (which I did read thru once before becoming a KJB believer) and the KJB in both source of texts and any textual notes, the general value of the introductions and commentary in your edition and the use of language where the RT and CT are the same.
I have that exact bible! I’ve read most of it, and really enjoyed it. To be fair I haven’t read the other NASB additions yet so I can’t say how it compares.

I’ve got an old 77 NASB sent off to get rebound. I plan to use the 77 NASB a whole lot more (might become my primary translation).
I bought my Thompson Chain Reference NASB ‘77 back in 2009, and like it very much. The thees and thous seem jarring to me, however.
After a night of sleep, I got to thinking that I should mention that while I love my NASB 1977, there are times when the wording gets a little confusing and the sentence structure just doesn’t flow. I then reach for my Oxford Annotated NRSV.
I've got one of those that was my primary Bible back in 1993
I bought this same edition about three or four years ago. There are small differences here and there when compared with the 95 NASB and the LSB, but not very many, except as others have said the older English when prayer is quoted. (Which is one of the things I love not only about the 77 NAS, but also the RSV and NEB) Right now in the NASB line of Bible versions my favorites are the 77 and the 2020. I think the 77 is worth reading through.
I love this edition by AMG! My only small gripe, and it's just a preference issue, is that I would have liked to see more footnotes. I think they have all the significant footnotes from the 77, but only in certain places. (As it is, I already feel that the footnotes in the NASB line are lacking) But that's a small issue lol, really great and quality edition of the NASB 77 still in print! God bless 🙏

there are MANY differences between the 1995 and the 1977... but you just have not caught them yet... I think there are a few sites that might be able to share all of .. the changed verses... 2 verses I know of for sure... are

well In that respect you are correct...I feel the NASB DOES stand out when compared to the other modern translations...I love the NASB95...and the NASB77 each for different reasons.. perhaps many of the same reasons that you have found between each... I have most recently been buying older renderings of the NASB... I Had a 1985 Open Bible rendition that I THOUGHT was the 1977 text.. but now I am not so sure...and I found a site that claimed the NASB omitted verses much like the NIV and ESV and RSV do.. but I had Not noticed that..
but then I realized that the NASB was updated several different times... it first was released in it's entirety in 1971.. and then updated in 1973...1977... 1985... 1995 and 2020..
I will probably Not purchase the 2020 rendition.. cuz I think making a bible gender neutral is overstepping. .but I DID notice that in the 1973.. those "missing verses".. are relegated to a footnote.. then beginning in 1977.. they included these verses in the text but bracketed.. I have a 1971 first edition coming to see.. if the footnote marking is NOT there.. in these verses...
I am VERY curious to see what updates in the verses there are between the 1971 and the 1977 renderings...
most people know about the changes between the NASB95 and 2020.. but these old versions it is hard to find much info about...
also many times their prefaces are completely re written.. another thing I like to see.. is over the years,,, what new insights are shared in these prefaces and introductions...

The 77 NASB retains the old English pronouns when addressing Deity. In many ways it reads better than the 95 edition. I think you would benefit from reading it.
I bought a 1977 Thompson Chain-Reference Bible about 6 months ago for $35, I see it is now $22 on Amazon. I would recommend this.
The '77 is one of my favorites because it retained the Elizabethan English in all the utterances and poetic passages. I prefer the '95 for actual studying of the scriptures because it is super literal straightforward language and I need that for formal study. But I absolutely love the hybrid approached used in the NASB1977! I have a hard copy and I read it on the kindle.
If you don't mind it being a non-TR translation, I think NASB77 is slightly preferable to the NKJV because of the thees and thous.
The 77 is a great translation
Since you've already read the NASB95 and the RSV (which also has the divine-only thees and thines), I'd say it's not really necessary to read the 77. On the other hand, I also appreciate the nuggets you find in every version.
I have **some** experience with the NASB '77 has I have a Key Word Study Bible and another Bible (text only) and I really love it! It's my #2 favorite NASB (the '95 being the #1). I think there is also a '73, if I'm not wrong

If you wish to get technical... there is a 1971...1973....1977...1985...1995.....2020... rendition...of the NASB... and ALL are slightly different in their texts.. some have greater differences made in them than others...
It'd be interesting to see how it compares to later NASB versions, the LSB, and KJV. If you are short on time, maybe just read the Wisdom books. That seems to be where it differs from later updates the most anyway.
I have the 77 NASB TCR that used for years. as a NASB fanboy its enjoyable. kind of a mix of the KJV and NKJV. I wish there was other formats of it.
I have one of those. Bonded leather burgundy. Print is large but the formatting and font is old fashioned and not easily readable IMO. Lots of ghosting too. I had high hopes it would be a great rebind project but I am going to have to pass on doing that. It will be interesting to see what you think of it....

The NASB 77 Hebrew-Greek Keyword Study Bible is my PRIMARY translation of choice.
As you enjoy the pure poetry of God's word, I'm sure you'll love how the NASB 77 renders such throughout. The NASB was my first Bible that displayed caps pronouns of God, along with all caps for OT quotes in NT, made it easy to follow. Though, I still default to NKJV and BSB.

Ok...Tim... you asked... so I will tell you what I have been experiencing...
the first NASB I bought was about 3 years ago it was an NASB Open Bible rendition...copy right 1985.. but the text was from 1977... then I decided to purchase a used NASB 1995... edition... and I found hat in many verses these 2 are VASTLY different.... not just in regards to the thee's and thou's
changes but also in regards to the text in many of the verses... between the 1077 and the 1995 renditions... there are so many variations between the two texts it would be too lengthy to try to list them all here...
Two things I can share .. is for One... in the NASB 1977 Luke 24:51... does not state Jesus ascended... this was updated in the 1995 rendition... the NASB HAD to make this change... because in Acts 1:2
Luke mentions he had told Theophilus All... but omitting this from Luke 24:51..does Not correlate these two verses together...
also 1 John 5:6-8.... are totally different.. in the 1977 rendition... it seems to follow the KJV rendering closer... and the 1995 rendering has this all changed...
I would suggest you type in the differences on google to find a site that can list these differences off for you and this way you can print them off. .since there are SO many...

I recently purchased a NASB 1973 to check because I read that the NASB originally omitted those 11 or 12 notorious verses thaqt the NIV has been scrutinized so much over for all these years... and the 1973... Has just a reference to the footnote in those places... but it does Not skip the verses like the ESV...RSV... and NIV's do... so Now I am in the process of purchasing a used 1971 copy... the First year the NASB complete was released to see.. if there is a difference between the 1973 and the 1971 renditions..
there is Not a lot of internet info about changes between these early renditions.... but there are pages listed regarding the changes between the 1977 and 1995 listed on the internet...
as well as the changes from 1995 to 2020...but I am sure you are aware of a lot of the issues between the 2020... and 1995 already...

I can't comment on whether you should read it or not as I have one but have not read it. I use the NASB95 and CSB but refer to other translations for study, this being one of them. Mine is an old hardback Open Bible that I have no idea how to use properly, I just lookup verses sometimes.

AMG also publishes a KJV Bible that's identical to the NASB 77 except for the translation of course. They are a little harder to find but they are out there.
When you read the NASB 77 have a KJV handy and read and compare the two. They aren't identical but they do have similarities.
I believe that the NASB up to the 95 version are solid in doctrine.

Yes, I've read it. I was given one in 1993, and used it for street preaching and had read it cover to cover Ephesians 6:16 always amused me, so read that verse in the 77 and you'll see why. I actually bought a 95 but haven't read it cover to cover because they changed that verse! As well as took out the personal pronouns when referring to God. But yea, Ephesians 6:16 my man!
And I recently acquired that very same AMG edition and have read through to Ephesians. Nearly to the end. The cover does begin to lay flat with use.
I'm a KJV kind of guy, but this is one that I do have a soft spot for. Bless you
P.s. In some parts of this edition, spacing is cramped between words, and sometimes words are cut off and continued on the next line in an odd and not-too-grammatically-correct fashion, so it's not perfect, but it's still readable.

I do not feel that the NASB 77 is close to the feel of the NKJV at all... maybe to the KJV... but NOT the NKJV....
i bought a used NASB 1977 about 6 years ago and I am very happy with it. It's my main bible.I have no desire to read the more modern versions with the gender adjustment crap. As far as I'm concerned, all of the updated versions of all the bibles have been made worse, not better.
That is definitely true of the NRSVue.
I guess I am ignorant as to what the differences are from whatever people have now? I've never read the NASB. I do remember my pastor at the church where I got saved used to preach from it. But, hey, my view is, the more Bible, the better!

I have been studying different translations and renditions of these translations.. for a few years now.. and I can tell you first hand... that between the most popular translations.. the NIV...RSV...ESV...NASB...KJV...and NKJV.. there is a wide variety of difference... from what one can glean from the verses.. simply by the way they are worded.. surely.. a person can get saved by reading from any of them.. but.. if one is serious about their Christian walk.... and wishing to know the true God of the bible.. or in other words... what God wants each of us to know about Him... sometimes we need to discern what bible we are reading from..
I...myself am partial to the KJV... but I have often found where the message of the word is easier to understand in some of the other translations... sometimes.. it takes some cross referencing and comparison.. to truly get to the Word as God had intended... and this is due.. to the biases brought into the word by the translators..... I am sure that many of them leaned toward a certain point of vie even unconsciously ... but also some bibles have contradictions among their own text..
take the NASB for instance.. we all know that David slew Goliath correct?.. well.. we read about this in the NASB as well but later in 2 Samuel 21:19... we are told that Elhanan slew Goliath.. all within the same bible... then in Chronicles we are told the truth regarding who Elhanan... slew... it seems the translators erred in
2 Samuel 21:19 but this error is Not only found in the NASB.. I believe it is in the RSV and ESV as well..

I would say no if you have read the NASB 95. However, I will tell you that I first began serious study of the bible using the NASB 77. I bought it when I was in high school. My first copy is a Moody Press thinline Calfskin and it has held up relatively well although the print is uncomfortable for me to read now, so I have several 95 editions in larger print. I have actually purchased the copy you are presenting so I can have one with a larger font. I don't know that there's a lot of difference except when the LORD is addressed. In the 77 Elizabethan pronouns are used, which may seem strange depending on your age, as for me, my parents and their generation always addressed the LORD with these pronouns so it seems respectful not archaic to me. I'm sure there are other differences, but not likely significant that I can remember. If you do choose to read it, I know you'll be blessed. Another side note, I consider the NKJV and ESV as my main bibles now.

I used to trust the NKJV and the ESV.. but I don't anymore.... I have seen too many errors in them..

I am not qualified to advise on whether you should read it as I haven't read it, but you do have a nice nearly text-only version there. Perhaps there is no reason to read it, but I see no reason why you can't either. At the end of the end of the day, you'll do what is right for you.
My advice is that you make one translation your Bible, but have your Greek text or computer study program open when you study. By the way I like the Blueletterbible program.
The problem that the think I see the most is that teachers make Bible interpretations based on English words not the Greek words. The word see in John 1:18 differs from the word see John 5:19.
We need to check the Greek text not another English translation.
NKJV is my bible. But I read many translations.

I kind of agree with you.... I have often used an interlinear to cross reference the texts in the bibles I compare... but I DO keep coming back to this one thought...
Is that how God.. planned for His word to be read?.. by having to use something to decipher what we are reading...?
that is why even though I TOO, am guilty if resorting to reference to the original language of the word.. in my mind I am thinking.... God did not plan for His chosen ones to have to struggle so and to be so book heavy while getting to know Him more...
Most times I just pray and meditate over a passage especially one in which the text differs across translations... and I just have to trust in the Holy Spirit to guide me into the truth of what God wants me to glean from the text...
I am sure most average readers do not resort to reading the Original Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic, either..

Comparing the various translations on my desk is an exercise much like the party game - 4 to 5 people, a whispered message in the 1st person's ear, who whispers the message to the 2nd, 2nd to the 3rd, 3rd to the 4th who tells us what the original message was. Everyone knows that the message of the 4th person will be differrent from what was spoken to the 1st.
That's why I chose a NASB because of it is literally and grammarically translated. BUT, but, even so I have to get past the tanslators' biased opinion of a text. They might not always be intellectually honest. That is why I usually check into definitions and grammar of the original texts. (The word "See" John 1:18 is different than "See" in John 5:19. Really different word and meaning.)
For the average reader that you mentioned, who might not want to go through the effort of checking their translation, those who are the ministers of the gospel are under the burden of speaking accurately what God revealed.

I agree with you 100%.... so many times I have ran into people on these sites.. that were raised in a church.. that had a preacher.. that was biased in their own opinions.. and DID NOT cross check translations.. and bring the people all the possible narratives of any particular verse so that the people themselves could ponder it as the Bereans did... and allow the Holy Spirit to lead them into all truths..
these so called preachers ..( and I have sat under a few).. pushed their own beliefs onto people as if they were totally accurate 100% of the time but they were Not... either because they read from wrong translations.. did Not.. cross reference.. or once believed somethin in error and never strived to gain a fuller knowledge of it..
the most recent experience I had was in the church I am now.. when our Sunday School class was going thru the book of 1 Thessalonians..
the teachers who met with the Pastor on Tuesday nights to go over the material.. had strict instructions NOT to get into any debates with anyone over the Rapture... a key part of 1 Thessalonians IMO.. why?..
because this Pastor did NOT believe there was going to be a Rapture...
He believed falsely somehow.. that Christ was only coming ONCE more... and that would be at the end of the age... He could Not understand that technically during the Rapture.. Jesus is Not coming to the earth.. we will meet Him in the air.. so the Rapture cannot be classified.. as the Advent.. yet he thought the 2 were the same..
He is no longer our Pastor thank God... the elders of the church had finally had enough... about 80 people left the church..
I attend a Baptist church BTW... and for a Baptist to preach No Rapture.. is almost a sin..
AND this Pastor made it plain we would NOT convince him otherwise...
I believe that Preaching the Scripture is a very important position.. those who preach or teach should NOT take it lightly AND they should be well versed... studying to show themselves approved..
