The story of Psychonauts is both depressing and inspiring. So much hard work against such great odds just to make the game happen, and it was branded a "failure" anyway. And yet it's inspired so many people and is beloved to this day. Personally I absolutely loved it (in fact I bought it twice - once for the PS2 and once for the PC), and one of the big disappointments of my life was that the sequel never happened. When I found out it was going ahead after all I couldn't believe it! I'm so happy and excited!
Yes of course I chipped in. I've been checking the campaign's progress every day. Methinks it's going to make a lot more than expected. Which is awesome.
(Oh man I say "X. Which is awesome" all the time, and I just now realised I got that from Psychonauts...)

Normally I can't stand youtube comment sections, but these are so positive it just gets me more stoked about the sequel. I've googled "psychonauts 2" probably once every 3 months for the past couple years. I donated the first chance I got and have been pulling up the fig page to check the progress every day. Idk if any DoubleFine members will read this, but thanks for creating such entertaining games, I hope you guys stick around for a long time even if the sequel somehow doesn't get funded.

Psychonauts is one of the most influential games I've ever played. Probably the only game i've bought three times. Its story, world design, humor, character designs and style; Its the first game that showed me just how quirky and expressive storytelling in a game could be. And in an action platformer no less!

Watching this now and I had no idea this game almost didn't come out. I remember back in 2004/2005 playing a demo of it at an old PC store called CompUSA and immediately being fascinated with it. Because I never ended up getting it and it ended up becoming so hard to find secondhand copies of the game it was my white whale up til 2012 when I finally found a used copy for the PS2 at Gamestop. It exceeded my expectations and it's still one of my favorite games to this day.

I was giving away copies of Psychonauts on Reddit for Thanksgiving since it was on steam sale for 99c, also convinced a lot of people to try it who hadn't played it before. Then to my surprise the announcement for Psychonauts 2 crowdfunding campaign came out like a week later, talk about a synchronicity! :D I hope that my evangelism for this awesome game in some small way helps drive some new eyes to the franchise. Everyone I've convinced to play it seems to really enjoy it. I have faith that Psychonauts 2 will be every bit as good as the first one. Thanks for making this documentary, I enjoy peeking behind the scenes. Love you guys

I remember when i read about this game (and Voodoo Vince) on a manual from an og Xbox game i got for Christmas. I've ALWAYS wanted to play it, seeing the trailers on the "bonus/extras" in the game i owned made me ask my parents sooo many times to get it for me. And now, being 18, the game always stuck in the back of my head and now i was finalle able to play it with Discord Nitro, and ive already completed it 100% 3 times. I love it, and i love even more that i never forgot about it.

I had a friend who introduced me to Psychonauts around the time it came out, maybe a bit later. It was a free CD for a gamer magazine here in Hungary and he started to play it. "Mentalis über alles" was the first line I'd remember. After almost a decade I was bored and remembered the title "Psychonauts"..oh, that could be interesting. It was fun and like you said the feeling of teenage :) It is a very creative game with a lot of good ideas in it story and play-wise. Thanks

This was a really cool documentary and great sneak peek at a very human games studio. I love Double Fine's games and Psychonauts is easily my favorite. Can't wait for Psychonauts 2! Lots to live up to, but there's so much room for improvement and fresh ideas that I doubt it can possibly disappoint me (unless it turns into a weird psuedo-RTS game halfway through - I'm looking at YOU Brutal Legend)

Just finished 100 percenting psychonauts 2. A few years ago I had never even heard of psychonauts. Then a couple years ago I started it, and finally finished it this year, while going through a lot of my own problems. I just love the message so much. I hope if you make more psychonauts stuff in the future that you try to tackle mental health even more head on, and explore even more struggles that real people face, to continue to cheer them on in their journeys and inspire them to invest in themselves and to be more understanding of others, the way these games have done for me. Thank you.

I don't know how many hours I have on my original file (considering it was erased due to a power outage while the game was auto saving on my PS2, but restarting the game wasn't a huge deal even when I was almost done with it...replaying it from the beginning is always a treat.) So I don't know how many hours all together I have poured into that game. On Steam I have...76 hours and counting (considering I've restarted and 100% completed the game countless times.) It's by far one of my favorite games, and it's been my favorite game since I first played it in 2006. I never knew I needed a sequel so bad until you guys announced it. This video made me appreciate the game and the company a lot more, and I look forward to seeing what comes next for Raz the Psychonaut.

I have been in love with this game since I was 16, back in 05 when it was released. The music in the campgrounds is my favorite music in the game. It's very Poison the Well.
The velvet painting level is my favorite level.
I found the Easter egg in Madness Returns btw, back in 2011. That is another all time favorite game of mine. Psychonauts and Madness Returns somehow fit beautifully together.
American is working on Alice Asylum as you guys are working on Psychonauts 2 and seeing both teams simultaneously create these new masterpieces brings me to tears. These games have been such an integral part of my life. Thank you for keeping this magic strong after so many years. We have complete faith in you and we know Psychonauts 2 is going to be amazing. I have literally been hoping for this for years. Thank you so much for making it happen. 💜

I had always assumed it was a relatively quick hand off from Microsoft to Majesco, I never knew it had gotten that dire. I'm glad you guys made it through, Psychonauts was definitely worth the wait and has stood the test of time pretty well.
I don't think you have too much to worry about when trying to bring a platformer "back" in this generation. The only studios out there who have been exploring that 3D platformer space since 2005 have been Nintendo and Insomniac. The general design of it holds up so well that all you really need is a new collection of brains to explore, though I guess thats where the real challenge is.
Maybe fit a temporally displaced roadie in there somewhere.

My dream has always been being part of the programming and creative team behind video games, I'm currently studying systems engineering to achive that. In the past I wanted to work for Capcom, but they got greedy with DLC, and I don't like that, takes away the beauty of the game, then I wanted to work for EA, and yeah... Then I wanted to work for Konami, since with Hideo Kojima's games I saw that a video game could be art, but Konami is not what it used to be, and now... I think I want to work for you guys, maybe in some years I will appear right on your door, maybo not, but this little documentary really reminds why I love game developing, keep on going and I hope the best for the company

Psychonauts 2 being in development is such great news I almost can't believe it. I really hope DF bring a lot of new to the table, avoid capitalizing on fan's nostalgia and let Psychonauts evolve instead of just rehashing old material. And also hopefully avoids using "damsel in distress" trope, which for me was the only flaw in the original game. Super excited and can't wait for the release!

I was 5 - 7 years old when I got psychonauts, I don't remember exactly how I got it or why but I remember asking my parents thats the game I wanted for my birthday, I don't know why I wanted, there is a chance I might have seen it on g4 at some point probably when they did find like cheat codes and shit and I thought ( wow that game is pretty cool looking ) and I loved the game so much that as I grew older and lost both my original xbox, I still had my original copy of the psychonauts game and I found out I could play it using xbox 360's backward's compatibility and when I saw the double fine lego with the psychonauts intro playing, it was sadly but in a ' I don't regret or care' kind of way, the best feeling in the world, because alot of happy memories seem to link my brain to the game and ever since than I loved double fine and everything they do and have done, I'm 19 now and I have learn so much about myself, about the gaming community, and tools I taught mostly myself on using to hopefully one day be a true game developer, and all because the feelings I got when I played Psychonauts as a kid

Proud to have been someone who bought the game at midnight on launch day at my local superwalmart(only option in small town america at the time). I was quite literally the only person I knew who bought it.

Psychonauts is one of my favorite games of all time, so much so that I've bought a version of it for every console release so far (I think). I'm really looking forward to Psychonauts 2.

I love these behind the scene videos even though I never did finish Psychonauts. I seem to get motion sickness from playing the game ; it was the combination of the vivid colours, the odd-looking characters, and the camera movement. It made me sick! I hope I get to finish it before the second Psychonauts comes out.

Watching this video and hearing about how Psychonauts didn't sell as well as it should have back then I'm reminded of this one interview I read a few years ago. It was with American McGee who was talking about how Alice didn't sell very well at first either but people stayed interested in it a looooong time after it released. The sequel to that game happened (11 years later) because the first one had this long tail where it kept making money long after way better selling games had stopped. I guess Psychonauts was kind of the same deal?

And here something that's cool as tits about this game.
I just started it for the first time ever, in 2020. It's the Xbox version, so no achievements, no widescreen. Just the original normal Xbox version of the game.....
It's still a ton of fun and controls really well. It's super interesting with its world and level design, the humor is still great, voice acting is good. Even the graphics, while technically dated, look perfectly fine due to how stylized everything is meant to be. Like if this was a new game that released today, I think it'd still do really well.
Gotta commend them on the work they put into it. I mean, not many platformers can say they still hold up both mechanically AND graphically. I do wish the original Xbox version had widescreen, but I'm not faulting them for that.
And now here's we are, finally getting Psychonauts 2. Can we all just give DoubleFine a nice big group clap?

I have alot of fond childhood/tween memories of this game :) it actually helped me look at people and their quirks from their/another point of view and honestly helped me on the road to being a more understanding person. I really cared for the characters and felt for them...despite their "weird" appearances ;) plus I had a crush on Raz...oops lmao!
