How to wrap a Tibetan Chupa or Chuba womens' dress

- The chupa is the traditional dress of Tibet. The female chupa is a long, ankle-length dress made out of a variety of fabrics, and underneath it, one wears something called a woon-juk, which is an open shirt that is folded up into the chupa.
To wear a chupa, first you have to put the shirt on, which is completely open. You put the dress on next. Then you must fold the right half of the shirt over a right panel that hits the bosom, and tie the panel to the inside of the outfit. Then, fold the left half of the woon-juk over the left panel, and pull the left panel over the rest of the bosom.
The straps will go around the front once, and then you tie the straps in the back .It creates an inverted “V” in the back of the dress. Usually then, girls will tighten that V.
It’s a bit difficult at first, to say the least. The best part is the pocket of the chupa that is created by the front panels near the bosom. I’ve seen some old ama-las (“mothers”) put so much stuff in that front pocket that it stretches it out, but the most I’ve ever put in it were rupees and a cell phone.
There are many ways to wear a chupa. There are half-chupas, just the skirt; you can wear a shirt over a full chupa; there are even one-piece chupas.
