  • The Keychron V1 is by no means a slouch in its stock form but I had to build it better. Originally build with unlubed Gateron Milky Yellow switches, improper keycaps, and no mods it sounded flat and clacky, but not in a good way. Today we revisit the Keychron V1 with a stack mount, lubed switches, and quality keycaps from NovelKeys. How about we take this bad boy up a notch?

    Quite content with the way this build turned out. I'll be driving this board more than expected in the future. What do you folks think? Let me know in the comments and be sure to get subscribed to be notified when the Gateron Cream Soda showcase video goes live. Link to the IC can be found in the video description!

    I quite like the implementation here of less is more. Plastic cases are more reliant on what switches you use, and it's nice to see that it's not filled to the brim with mute foam. Also probably why the KBD67 Lite is the best switch tester. You can actually hear the sound signature of each switch, without being altered much.

    • @user-qn1zj5bs5p
      @user-qn1zj5bs5p ปีที่แล้ว

      yea which is why i already gave up buying alu board because you need a lot of foam to mute out those ping and hollowness , in fact you only mute out your switches' characteristic , once i bought this and i totally in love with plastic board , removed all foam and put in legit and solid switches , it sounds completely different with any alu board

    Thanks for sharing your experience and mod. It sounds definitely better now. Also, I actually like the fact it is plastic. I own a Q2 which I really like, however the keys are slightly too high up and I am not willing to use a wrist rest. Ordere my V1 yesterday and will also tape mod it.

    I fucking love Keychron keyboards so much. I have one K8 Pro, and the fact that I can change the switches when I want from time to time change from Clicky to browns or linears.. is just amazing to me, and the build quality is insane, and compatible with all keycaps on the market.... I just love this, I think i will use this keyboard literally for decades lol

    I wouldn't go as far as removing the stand offs physically due to it being my only current go-to, however, I found that even simply not tightening the plastic body screws (Just enough so they hold the body together, slightly loser than hand tightened) made a really huge difference in sound making it much less clacky. The difference is rather dramatic, I wonder if you've noticed the same?

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Didn't bother as the first build I did was isolation mounted using orings. Stack mounting requires the removal of the standoffs to allow for the PCB assembly to "bounce" and provides a much softer typing feel vs the default tray mounting.

    Yo, i subbed because i like this mod. Well i think the v1 doesnt really need mods if we like poppy/marbly sound with pe foam and good linears. But ive done this mods into a newmen gm610 (without th is foam because i aint have it but instead coin mods + some dampening foam from boats) and it transform the crappy keyboard to decent one TBH.

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub! Each of the boards has their own selling points. The V1 is for someone who wants a board to mod with full software customization. The 5075 for looks and simplicity of having a board that just works out of the box. The V1 brings QMK/VIA to the table at the cost of a try mounted steel plate board where the 5075S has mediocre software but has 2 plate options that ship in the box, is gasket mounted, and includes all the usual foamy bits to produce the popular sound that people are after in the current landscape.

  • @nicoooJ
    @nicoooJ ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think this will also work with other Keychron V series boards, in specific, the Keychron V3 TKL?
    I'm now debating whether to do this stack mount mod or do an o ring mount mod instead. For keyboard sounds, I prefer high-pitched and clacky boards over deeper sounding boards but this is still a very interesting thing to do.

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything with an F-row to allow for the plate assembly to be sandwiched should work. I haven't tested it on the V3 personally but logically is should work since a TKL is very similar to a 75%.
      If you're going for clacky then the V-series is probably not the way to go period. Better off getting the Monsgeek M3 for around the same price and then drop $10 on the aluminum plate. Slap in some Akko Snow Blue Gray switches if you're into linears and you got yourself a nice flexy, clacky, and inexpensive build. I have a video on the M1 and M2 (have not received me M3 yet) if you want to see what the quality is like.
      Here is a link directly to the M3 if you want to check it out!

Alternatively, check out these far-superior Akko boards that will give you everything you're trying to get and more at the V1 price. I have 2 Akko 5075S videos on the channel if you'd like to see what its capable of. The full custom build I did I think turned out pretty awesome with the Lavender switches and MT3 keycaps but I would definitely customize it to your liking.

    in term of typing feel, do you prefer this after mod or the original Q1 (gasket) mount
    I have never tried gasket mount keyboard, but I tried to put foam literally below my V1 and type just to get the feel of gasket , it is so weird and it makes it more tiring to type because of the bounciness. It makes less impact no stiff, but I have to type harder because of the bounciness, I wonder if the gasket mounts feel like that?

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I made this video I would have probably preferred the Q1 because of the flexible feel. However, as I've grown in the hobby I have come to enjoy a stiffer typing experience. Gasket won't feel 1:1 with a stack mount but it will have that some sort of bouncy nature. Biggest difference is regional flex on the board. Rather than JUST being bouncy you will have parts of the board which flex as well if you softer plates. It just allows you to further customize the feel. Using a metallic plate like which is stock will always be a stiffer experience.

    • @sprazer
      @sprazer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@punkshoo I am thinking of buying POM plate for my V1 , do you think I will get the soft feeling or I should just sell my V1 and buy the Q1 instead, I know this question is not simple but you know what Im asking, thanks

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      The V1 is a tray mounted board. Anything you do outside of that will technically be a modified experience and you will have to work out what is best for you. If you want a gasket-like typing experience with readily available POM plates you're going to want the Q1. The V1 does not have POM plates available and you will need to have one made custom for it.

    On my v1, 1 screw was stuck behind the pcb which holds it to the plate. I CAN'T do mods to the stabs due to this issue. It was very tight from the factory. I like to love keychron but due to this, it keeps me second guessing what keyboard to replace it.
    And customer service sucks. Still no reply within 24 hours.

    • @punkshoo
      @punkshoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you're referring to the plate standoff screws. Stuck in what capacity? They do use a bit of blue Loctite to keep the screws from working out with use but, providing you're using the proper sized bit and not stripping the head, should unscrew with a bit of elbow grease.
