      They've been reported on the decline here in the PNW, it might be possible that they've started to relocate? If the Moose are like our Elk, they'll suck your feeders dry...

    Can I just say how grateful I am for your subtitles? English is not my native language and I also already have some issues with processing what I hear sometimes, so they’re a huge help when I don’t understand something. Not to mention folks hard of hearing. So thank you! 😊

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Happy to hear! I go through every video and try to edit TH-cam's auto-generated subtitles as best as I can. They don't do too well with auto-generating bird names. For example, Pine Grosbeak was auto-translated to "Pine Grow Speaks" and "Pine Growth Beaks" which I can imagine would be annoying to anyone reading subtitles haha

    Oh Stefano, as a P.S. I just got in from tending to my feeding station on a dark and snowy afternoon. As I was filling one of the feeders several Black Capped Chickadees landed in a branch near my head. Recalling your video, I put out my hand with seed : one flyby, one closer flyby and next a real quick touch and go. A curious Oak Titmouse exclaimed "hold my beer" and directly landed. The flood gate was opened after that...

    In the 5th grade I did a report on the Black-capped chickadee. I'll always remember that.... I know their call and can emulate their call like it's 2+2. It's a clear call, but not a crisp call. There's a mild vibration (hum) in their call.

    We live in Eastern Ontario and have fed the winter birds for many years. Our challenge is that we have hickory trees on our property which attract and feed black and red squirrels. Any seed on the ground or on a platform feeder is quickly vacuumed up by the squirrels. We have a tube feeder with spring portals that works super well for the chickadees, nuthatches, pine siskins and goldfinches but it is frustrating that we can't encourage the cardinals, redpolls, juncos more. Although the woodpeckers take some seed from the tube feeder, they prefer suet but we gave up on that as the squirrels ate all that up as well. They simply stick their paws in the openings and scoop it out, or manage to wrangle the door off. Glad you finally got some pine grosbeaks. Years ago we used to get flocks of 30 or so evening grosbeaks but not any more.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! We have about 4 red squirrels here. I don't mind feeding them, but I do like to have areas where the feeders are squirrel proofed so the birds can feed comfortably. I can see why your situation is much different, having both red and black squirrels would demolish a feeding station super quickly. Hopefully the evening grosbeaks return to your area soon!

    Great video as always!
    In case you did not see my response on the ponds in the last video: I wouldn't put fish in the pond that doesn't have fish in it to begin with (especially since one of the ponds already has fish in it). While it could benefit some fish-eaters, it will harm many more species. A pond with fish greatly alters the dynamic between species living within the pond, generally creating a much lower diversity and abundance of invertebrates and amphibians. Predation is, of course, a natural part of the ecosystem, but as you are trying to create high biodiversity, it might not be in your best interest to introduce fish. Again, especially since one of the ponds already has fish in it. Best to you and your future projects! // an ecologist :)

      Definitely! I didn't mention it in the video, but the reason I suggested adding fish to that forest pond was because it seems we will have a good amount of vernal/ephemeral pools elsewhere on the property. So I'm guessing the amphibians will have many options for breeding. But I agree, if I do a "fish pond" I'll most likely keep it at the front where we already have fish. Thank you for sharing!

    Nicely done, Stefano! Look forward to seeing more. I'd love to glass an evening grosbeak, but I've never seen one in my part of Missouri.

    I commented in your last video as well. I just want to warn you before you go stocking that pond, if it is man made you should never add any crayfish to it, if they had to bring in clay to make a liner they crayfish will burrow through it and drain the pond
