Thank you for this informative video. I just adopted a 9 year old cat, who has this pouch, and I was worried about her health history. I thought she was abused and used as a "kitten factory". So thank you! I feel relieved.
its not caused by getting a cat fixed. my cat has never had a procedure done, hes under a year old and he has a pouch too. ive seen a lot of cats that are not fixed with sagging pouches like yours.
Primordial pouch is for protection during fights. It protects their organs. www.catbehaviorassociates.com/why-some-cats-look-as-if-they-have-a-flabby-belly/
I'm not sure, Mal's the one who did the research on this one. It seems like there are a fair bit of people in the comments claiming the pouch is missing, so I'm not sure if their cats are lucky, or the pouch isn't noticeable, or maybe it's unique to certain breeds. Someone also suggested it may be linked to the age when the cat was neutered, which sounds feasible.
You're right-Rocko is fat. But! His pouch is quite small. You can tell it's there, but it's not as pronounced as Sagan or Kepler's. Then again, maybe Rocko is so big that it's stretching the pouch around his stomach :P
My cat is 14 years old and she had never had the pouch up until just a two weeks ago and i was scared that it was something bad but thx to this video i am no longer nervous!
My cat has had the pouch too, but he has a very thick/fluffy coat, so it's mostly hidden. He did gain about 3lbs after getting neutered last fall, but most of his weight is fluff and muscle...mostly fluff.
Wonder if the age of the cat when "fixed" would play into this? My cat was close to full grown before it was done and never developed a pouch, while Sagan and Kep where probably less than six months?
Thanks I was worried as I just got my cat groomed and noticed that he had two pouches hanging I thought he might have had something wrong with him. Very informative Thanks
My cat she's almost over a year old now , never been neutered , indoor cat since she was a month old ,now she only eats dry food and drinks enough water I guess, un-scheduled food , her food and water bowl is always there in front of her, her sagan or pouch is seems heavy , my only concerns is hopefully it won't be lethal for female cat
Definitely an interesting theory, and one I could get behind. There's probably more information on the subject somewhere out in cyber space, but this makes a lot of sense.
Our 2 kitties have the same thing. We both got our cats spayed and neutered together and they have both have developed that pouch. Our female cat does have some fat but she has lost all that by just changing her diet. And that was a very cool fact about Kep being the oldest. I always thought Segan was. Our 2 cats are actually close in age too, about a month apart.
It's not because it was fixed. They can be born with them. It acts as a second stomach and protection when other cats use their feet to kick their tummy. It's called a primordial pouch btw.
Wild cats have it and they are not fixed. The primordial pouch is there for several reasons in felines, one being protection. . You’re cats are beautiful BTW.
My family's cat Kiwi is a good size for a cat, if a touch small due to being the runt of the litter (her crooked tail is testament to that). She also has that pouch underneath having been neutered, and it is very, very funny seeing that pouch swinging when she runs. Given Kiwi is quite jumpy, she tends to run around a lot - one can watch our cat suddenly rush across the backyard and up a tree for no apparent reason.
Today, a gray cat came to my door, I don’t know much about cats, I purchased food and gave him water and he/she has this sagging pouch. Thank you this helps, he also cries a lot meows a lot and I don’t know why? 🤷🏻♀️
hey, you should also note that(atleast with my cats) they might jsut get tired of eating the same thing over and over.. and thats udnerstandable, but they might jsut like what they eat now because its new..? what if they get tired of it.
This was so helpful. I have a stray since April 5 2020 and I thought she was pregnant or had a tumor. but now I think it's this. Unfortunately vets are still closed due to Corona but im also worried if she has been fixed, a family is looking for her. and when i am able to take her to the vet she may be chipped and i have to give her back. Also, I like the fact she cant jump up on our kitchen counter or dining room table.
My cat did not develop one at all after getting neutered do you know this is something in all cats, or just certain kinds of cats, or maybe there is a difference between short and long haired cats
We don't. It's never been anything we've had for any of our pets and they've done fine in the past. Although to be fair, it would've been worth its weight in gold if we had it shortly after we got Kep, since we paid lots of money in vet bills :\
Thanks for this video mate. I was worried about my cat. Although he is not fixed, he still developed this primordial pouch. Also, does it disappear any time? I mean, obviously, not permanently but just not visible.
Honestly all of my cats be them male or female have had some sort of pouch like thing. We've always had our cats spayed and neutered. But my male cats have always had big pouches.
Unspayed mountain lions have that "pouch." I really do not think it has to do with spay/neuter. Cats have a lot of spare skin because they can escape being caught (virtually roll in their own skins). They are very muscular and have a lot of spare skin.
I've always known about this but my cats have been spayed/neutered and they don't have a pouch at all. Maybe there's different procedures and this is the outcome of just one?
My wife and I adopted a boy cat with one eye and he also has this saggy belly thank you for making this video, also a question what breed is ur cat Sagan looks exactly like our cat????
I never knew about this pouch issue. I just always thought that as the vlogs progress, the cats are SERIOUSLY GROWING LARGER. It's just really noticeable about their size. That's all, but I learned more things about cats. *thumbs up*
Great video mate. Im not sure I agree with the neutering of the cat for its primordial pouch as i have a 5yr old unneuterd active tabby female whose pouch is half the length of her body. Well fed cats develop these pouches.
I would just like to say that your inaccurate about cats having a primordial pouch also known as an apron. It’s not just to spayed cats and it’s all ages and spayed or not I have a 3 -4 month old kitten and she has a flabby pouch. She’s very small but has the pouch.
my cat's pouch is even bigger than that... but the rest of her body is just skinny, so I agree with this. Also, I've read that fixing the cats isn't what develops the primordial pouch but that many cats or all cats have it naturally...some are just noticeable others aren't...
If you've got more than one cat, you may have noticed how they kick at each other's stomachs when they're fighting. That's just play, but the tactic is the means by which they kill prey. Cats have belly fat, like most animals, to protect their viscera. All domestic cats have a loose flap of skin, often called the primordial pouch, which protects their stomachs. It almost looks as if they've swollen to Garfield-sized proportions, slimmed down, and retained the extra skin.

Some pet owners mistakenly believe that only cats that have been neutered or spayed develop a primordial pouch. This simply isn’t true-you’ll find a telltale cat belly on any feline, intact or not.
My cats are legit obese, and they have this same pouch. They're spade & neutered also (don't know if I spelled it correctly) my cats are pretty fat anyways, but they also have a lot of fur. So even though you can still see the pouch it kind of just looks like they're really fluffy. My cats are beautiful and I think all cats are beautiful, fat or not fat.
