- This is just a quick video as we have seen that in many Facebook groups that people are unaware of what to do when you purchase a brand new tow bar for your vehicle. This is just a quick insight of what I did to remove the paint and contaminants from the tow ball.

I had no idea this was a thing until it came up on my feed from another channel. We’re total newbs and collect our first ‘van - with Alko hitch - in a couple of weeks, the car dealer fitted the tow bar this week, and yet no one has mentioned this needs doing. Here We Tow was my first port-of-call for advice and verification that the tow ball powder coating needed to come off and, yep, seems it does! Thank you! Although I think I’ll dig out the workmate to help hold everything steady 👍 Deffo worth a subscription 👌

Funny when I were a lad they came ready to use even with Alko etc stabilisers so never got to clean my own :-)

It's much easier when the ball is fitted onto the car, you can get better purchase to clean it.

Trust you to spot my dish washing brush !! 😂😂. I acquired it from the sink area it’s fantastic at getting all the grime off my bike under the seat. It gets caked in mud and saves my sponges getting clogged up with all the chain lube.
See you had the same hassle as me, trying to hold it still with one hand, and sand it with the other, I put it on the car to finish it off.....when's the big day Jules ?????

It is really baffling why they don't leave the ball uncoated and just protect it from oxidisation with some oil which can be cleaned off with some brake cleaner, the same way new brake discs are supplied. I guarantee that a large number of these tow balls get used with the coating on.
Absolutely and it’s only through research that people know to take the coating off as they would probably be scared of damaging the ball head.
why does'nt it come ready to use ?........seems ridiculous you have to go to all that effort never the less good video guys
Thank you. In relation to the coating I think it’s possibly for two reasons. Firstly it may be that it would take more time and effort to mask the area off and secondly just in case people are not wanting it for the Alko hitch lock and use it for some other use. It’s only beneficial for bare metal for the stability pads to do there job. 👍👍
To make life easier why not use Nitromors on the ball ? 5 minute job !
Surely 60 grit is far too abrasive

Unfortunately not. Just the bench you can see. It was just to try and show how easy and important it is to get the coating off so that the pads can attach properly on the Alko hitch. 👍
Here we Tow you should have done it on the car then.
