  • Preparing a new tow ball/towbar for first use is critical, and the good news is it's a job most people should be able to do at home and with little expense.
    The sandpaper/wet & dry is from Amazon (link below) it's a pack of 42 which you don't need that much but if you're like me this stuff always comes in handy around the house, shed or garage.

    Here is the kit we use to film including affiliate links
    GoPro Hero 11
    The hero 11 is a great bit of kit, especially since the stabilisation is insane.
    amzn.to/3lp504C
    GoPro Volta
    Not only is the volta an excellent grip it has a built-in battery so it is great for extending filming time.

    GoPro Accessory Pack
    This kit includes loads of different connectors and mounts for all occasions.
    amzn.to/3DXIciU
    Iphone 12 Mini
    All the greatness of an iphone but in a smaller form factor.
    amzn.to/3DXRxHD
    DJI MIC
    Improves sound quality significantly, especially if you are moving around away from the camera, we use this with both the iPhone and GoPro

    We pick up our first ‘van in a couple of weeks and have so much to learn - my goal is not to look like the total newb when we go away for the first time, so info like this is really useful. No doubt I’ll still goof something up within ten minutes of arriving on site but I’m sure we’ll soon get into the swing of it all 😂

      Don't worry. we all had to start somewhere. thing you'll find with caravanners (we've only experienced UK caravanners) is they are always ready to help out with any issues and quite often have spare kit. So, don't be embarrassed to ask as you will get help and usually some extra advice. plus, it's a good way to start chatting to likeminded people. Enjoy!
      Just some advice with towing - take it easy and slowly when manoeuvring with the caravan on and give yourself more room when turning left or right as your vehicle will tend to make the caravan cut the corner, if not. Main thing is don't panic. You'll soon get the hang of it.
      Just noticed your post was 9 months ago - hope you found what i said to be true!

    Wow! As much as I have watched a video on this subject previously it hadn't started from painted, simply ongoing maintenance, presumably because of that the fact that a painted towball (as mine currently is) never came up, going off to clean it before Saturdays towing training!!!

    Hi i had a 2018 caravan no noise when towing I've recently changed to a 2022 i now have noise I'm thinking better friction pads on my tow ball which has paint on it did you have to do anything with the friction pads or was it just the tow ball

      I did the same at work, saves money by not buying all that wet and dry.

    Thank you for the very informative video , I’ve just bought the stabiliser coupler and a new tow ball I need to prepare. I was thinking of using my drill with a metalic brush disc attached to it. Do you think it is going to work?

      @BigWhiteBox  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, yes I have seen some videos using a brush with a drill and seems to do the same thing

      @@BigWhiteBox It did work with the brush. I had my first trip with my Alko stabiliser and I must say it made o huge difference!

    Hello
    When you were using the emery paper, what were you spraying on? Was this water or brake fluid?
    Thanks ever so much.
    Best regards Paul

      He says it's water but even so, it should be brake CLEANER, NOT brake FLUID!

    I've just had one of these very tow balls fitted and never did the cleaning before towing. In my defence the towball fitters never mentioned it when I left their shop. Does it matter if it isn't done?

    • @BigWhiteBox
      @BigWhiteBox  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The issue you will have is the paint comes off the ball and contaminates the friction pads, thanks for watching

      @@BigWhiteBox Thank you. I did get on to it the next morning. It took about 30 minutes with the wet and dry paper to clean it up. I'm new to caravanning, had a motorhome for years, but this in some ways is a new ball game. You should do a comparison video about the differences for each. Not that either is more right or wrong as a way of camping, but outlay, setting up and living the life is different. Just an idea.

      Personally, I think that it's too much trouble for the towbar manufacturer to mask the ball before the black paint is applied. Brake discs are bare metal coated with a protective film which is easily removed with a solvent. Imagine if you had to spend ages rubbing the paint off a brake disc before it was fitted, times four!
