I use a inverted triangle shaped ticket. Because your odds are improving on all of your horses as you win each leg. Your risk is huge in the first race, because you can get your whole ticket lost for being wrong. So I try to spread in the first race, and buy win tickets on all other runners. As I get to race 3, I am buying Pick-3's. You frown on hedging and applaud great accurate picks, but stuff happens, and bankroll protection can keep you in the game. "Be confident or don't play" doesn't apply with the Pick 5, because it is such a fragile bet. You might say we have the Pick 5 "because" we don't know who is going to win every race. There is a reason why we have so many bet types.. Exacta, Trifecta, Show, etc.. To use math in your favor, to allow you to win without having to predict the winner.
My advice - hedge in tiny amounts. I have hit the $100 horse in race 1 so many times, and was so glad to be able to live to fight another day.

Ive been practicing on .20 pick 6 to go for a big mandatory pay pick 6. What comes in my picks is my 4th,3rd,2nd,2nd,1st, I do 2x2x2x2x3x3. Gues Im going to switch to 4x3x3x2x2x2. I look for .20 p6 to practice on then look for mandatory p6. Tim Omaha Nebraska
