    New nut required - the originality of the guitar is not compromised and its function is far more important - you may as well never change the 'original' strings.

      Agree, and get a brass nut while you're at it so you never have to fuck with it again!

    Why would you mask off the nut to put wax on the fret board, when you could just mask off the fret board ?

  • @flapjack413

    Lol, I remember back when I first started building my own guitars, and I'd do this with fretboard dust and glue to fill around inlays, suddenly my fingertips feeling like they were in a blast furnace.. He's not fooling... it gets VERY hot!

    why in the world would someone opt for a something not designed as a permanent repair. It will in all likelihood chip or break in the near future? That guitar deserves a new nut. JMO, YMMVGorgeous guitar, btw!!

      Actually what he just did is usually stronger than the nut itsself. Plus, he wants to keep everything original.

      You would be surprised at how strong the superglue and dust trick can be. I would call it permanent if done properly.. And I agree, gorgeous guitar :)

    If you put the dust in first, wouldn't the superglue wick into all the cavities anyway? As far as I understand it, that's one of the accepted methods of filling fret slots for fretless conversions.
    The only way you'd get a gap of unglued powder underneath your glued/cured powder is if it didn't penetrate all the way (i.e. there wasn't enough glue in the first place) and then cured part of the way through the dust pile

    Wax the nuts can´t be good. ;)
    Baking soda does the trick to, and cheaper ( if you don´t have any bone at home).

  • @AeonAxisProductions
    @AeonAxisProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    so now ive seen putting the dust in first and putting the glue in first
    i just want to know which is the best way XD
    i hear a lot of people say that stewmac isnt that great so im leaning more towards this as the best way, plus it seems you get a denser compaction (if thats a word) of dust when you do it this way

  • @Satchmoeddie
    @Satchmoeddie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Baking soda & super glue is as Q&D as it gets, and it works quite well too. The stuff gets rock hard & sticks too. Why save the original?

    3.37 rusty screw for trussrod cover - where has this guitar been - in a damp shed?
    Why not use tape on fretboard against the nut and on the other side as well?

  • @philbarrows424
    @philbarrows424 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Will, why not tape off the fretboard and headstock around nut to prevent glue runoff?

    I really wished i lived in england now that i see your videos... I have a Gibson Custom shop that could need a good nut job. But more critically a good fret job... It intonates kinda horribly.. especially on the lower and middle frets.. Is there any way i can send a picture of the frets to you, and you give me advice as to what i should do? :(

    What about graphite nuts? I saw someone suggesting using pencil graphite as lubrication, could you also mix the dust with glue to fill in a nut slot? I have an Epiphone Iommi signature SG that had terrible string height alignment at the nut but I appear to have overdone it on the G so while the alignment is fine at the fretboard end I went a little too low angling the headstock side and it's getting caught occasionally and making the dreaded "ping" noise.

    Ise UV Glue or Dental Composite, much cleaner and stronger than super glue and powder.

    I have 2 custom guitar bodies with 2 telecaster type necks. I am wondering if I can modify the shape of the headstock to a pointier, custom style. Is that doable or would it affect the tone? Would I be better off getting a different stock made pointy headstocked neck?

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      mantovannni it won't change the tone very much but may, if you are extreme, affect your tuning stability.. if you don't go furthur than any other headstock design you've seen then you should be ok.

    If the nut is that bad, why did you opt to repair it rather than replace it?

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      pilgrimMj the client wanted it as stock as possible, he bought it with inheritance money after his dad died and it is very sentimental to him.. that and we could, I like a challenge :)

    • @richyp7126
      @richyp7126 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pilgrimMj absolutely right. This is a straightforward nut replacement. The laquer round the nut is easily saved by careful cutting and a thinner/top coat touchup. Complete overkill and the bone dust solution is an amateur shortcut. The nut is too important tonewise to have superglue in it.

    • @rockard94
      @rockard94 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      PilgriMj he says it in the video, the customer wanted to keep the original nut on

    Your phasing out ebony fret boards but using ivory ?
    Neil

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      not elephant ivory, it's a stock of hippo ivory I've had for years.. i.e. Hippo tried to kill my brother but, well, my brother came out on top and I ended up with the teeth. Not really very pc I suppose but it makes great nuts and means at least part of the poor animal was used intelligently in the end.

    That nut is one of those ridiculous Gibson nuts that are epoxied in place and are just a cap. They can only be removed properly with a chisel. Don't believe me try and remove it.
    Not Gibson's finest achievement.
