🔥 Thanks for this, Roberto! I need to definitely work on setting my other camera up and editing with multiple angles in mind. Just keepin' things fresh and interesting for my viewers. 👍
Ok, let me put this conversation in context: I am 53 years old. When I graduated from college in 1987 we took photographs with film and paid a lot of money to get them developed. I don’t think we even had video? We didn’t have the internet, we didn’t have email, we didn’t have social media. The platform we had? Was a photocopier. Paper, staples, zines. And I’m not saying this to be a grouchy old person. I am saying this because I am a brand new TH-camr with a couple videos and a handful of subscribers and I’m THRILLED that I have any platform at all to make my videos with my iPad and a window and iMovie. This is the best time to be alive and be a creative, a maker, to have a message and find an audience! Listen to Robert! He knows of what he speaks. Have patience. Do the work. Have fun. Connect. Find your tribe. Create create create!
You could afford a dime per copy for a photocopier? One of those rich girls, huh? We poor country guys were still using stone tablets and a hammer and chisel back in the early 1970s. A little older than you and also starting out. Picking the theme or niche is the hardest part.

Hi Roberto, as a newer channel, the thing that helps me the most is to just keep producing. When I'm consistent I pick up more on little things here and there everyday that make my content better and better, thank you!
You literally explained the exact reason I’ve been experiencing so much growth. I literally was just in the right place at the right time. I did it to get over shaking on camera and it just took off. Now it’s more about expansion. I think I may need to get over to that thumbnail video 😂

I have a niche audience & am ok with that. I just got monetized & it feels great to reach this goal. You are my #1 when it comes to TH-cam Creator advice. I have a lot to learn (& practice) when it comes to making my videos & will keep watching You for advice. Thank You Roberto 😇
You're right. It's taken me years of practice as an artist. I'll be 60 next month, and I'm still learning new things. Takes practice, practice, practice, and there's a lot of frustration along the way. But at my age I can't give up. NEVER give up!
I know I need to improve learning about the Analytics. I have no excuses as to why so I’m going to sit down and watch the videos by Creator Academy and implement them. I needed to hear this Brutally Honest talk. You never buffer anything and I appreciate that about you. Thank you.
I think you hit the nail on the head! It seems to me that your potential audience are the people who want to know who you are. So, if anyone is going to know you, you have to show up. That means making videos even if you think they suck. Maybe, I have been very lucky, but I have had very few haters. Most of the time, people are supportive. And also be honest with yourself. Give yourself a chance to grow and learn. And work on developing the relationships with the people who are trying to connect with you. Great advice as always. Thanks Roberto!
That's what I said to the people who in my 1k thank you video. They need to stop focusing on growth because that right is the fastest way to burn yourself out & not only that but demotivate you from making videos. I told this guy that because he was talking about quitting just because he was not getting as many views on his live stream or not getting to 1000 subs. I talk to him & even made a video dedicated to all small content creators to tell them the truth about how I went through the exact same thing & I showed what my channel looked like at the end. You have to put in the work & have fun with it because if you focus only on the growth than you start developing doubt, discourage, & wanting to quit which is a common thing I hear all the time. He finally heard me out & is still going & I'm so happy to had got through to him.
I’m unpacking this right here and now because this spoke to me in a big way! First, we’re working on engagement and the kids being dynamic. I’m working on SEO, editing, and social media engagement. I burn out from time to time. But I get back. TH-cam takes guts, time, and attention. It is work. When a video does not work in way I work on it anyway. And in those instances I ALWAYS learn a new on the editor. That way I have the time in. I have my kids analyze their performances and we try to make it better the next time we can. In terms of staying in our lane I have thought so many times about doing something different for a boost. But I feel that pulls away from the work we’re trying to do. And may confuse viewers regarding what we are about. Thank so much for this. The kick in the pants I needed.
The skill I need to master is adding more of myself into my tutorial content. I make gaming tutorials that are quick and to the point but I need to add commentary of where I struggled or what I liked or disliked about a boss etc so there is more to connect with than just a boring tutorial.
I relate so much with the "you don't have to spend so much on this and that" thing. People keep saying that I MUST use Sony Vegas Pro or a certain type of editing software just because a certain big TH-camr did it that way. However, I was just starting out. I had no idea how to do cuts and voice-over, or blend my audio and video files together and etc. Sony Vegas was overwhelming for a newcomer for me. And in the end, as it turned out, the "first step" I needed was just to learn to use the very basic Windows Movie Maker first, just to get a feel of how editing feels like, and then take more steps from there. One step at a time. That's something people keep forgetting because they think everything is an instant gratification now - that they could get something done in just a click or a press of a button, without learning any skill. That's not how things work most of the time and people need to remember that. Edit: As for to answer the question of the day... Perhaps you could share some time management tips that you use? I have a dayjob and sometime I had to skip a week or two to make contents.
4:37 is right on! A lot of changes the last few years have become frustrating for anyone looking to get TH-cam famous or even to just get monetized as a side stream of revenue. There's an attitude of entitlement from a lot of people, but then there are those of us who just get frustrated and unfortunately will make the comparison to other creators. There are a lot of people that disrespect TH-cam creators as well for this very same expectation...that it is NOT a REAL JOB or that you're just being LAZY. I love your quote that "comparison is the theft of joy" and it's something that I remind myself a lot whenever a new change at TH-cam occurs or one of my channels experiences an adverse analytical change, etc. I am a creative creator and so my niche does have a lot of arts and crafts competition, however, rather than negatively comparing my channel(s) to theirs, I try to learn from them when I have the time to dedicate to analytics and research. The bulk of my time, however, is spent editing content and enjoying the process. I value engagement here, but as you say....your whole focus should not just be about TH-cam only, even if you plan to have that become your main job. There are many facets to earning that audience and hopefully a paycheck. I think if we stop thinking that a channel is the end-all be-all and adopt to diversifying our brand, we can become better creators overall which helps fill out those 3 categories you spoke about. Thanks again for being real and congratulations on bypassing the 400k mark!
Becoming TH-cam famous is largely taken out of context by ppl who say “it’s my dream” because they don’t understand the reality... There is more work to “living” with TH-cam is not what people imagine...
Wow! You are so on point about how us NewTubers really need to practice our craft. I appreciate the "Rant". Thanks for being honest with us on creating content! By the way, I would have never known that once upon a time you hated public speaking. You are AWESOME at it now!
I think this is one of the more original and honest commentaries on this subject. At the end of the day, just because the work has moved into the digital space does not mean that things suddenly come for free. You've got to work consistently for a while both to improve your craft but also to build a solid foundation. That foundation will more than likely include transferable skills that will secure you for the future in this ever changing industry. My pain point at the moment is remembering that done is better than perfect-I just need to start publishing everyday and move on with the next thing.
Thank you Roberto, I agree 100%, keep on making videos is the only way to learn. I am really new, started January 4th, and unfortunately I watched to many videos on how to grow your channel instead of how to grow your knowledge and skill when i started. This made me have the totally wrong focus. As I did my 3 month evaluation I realized this, and now I am so much more inspired and have so much fun with my videos. This video would have been so great to watch when I started
Quality advice here that is helping me now as I revamp how I approach my content strategy going forward. You nailed it on the head with overproduced content we have far too much of that going on especially in the tech space that I'm in.
Absolutely. There is beauty and vulnerability in the imperfection. It connects in a gorgeous way and to be honest it sets you apart because most are concerned with quality and yes, still put out something that's valuable to someone else, but dont overthink.
I've just started my TH-cam channel two months ago, just with my phone. I don't know anything but I am learning a lot from you. Thanks All along from Kenya
Thank you so much for this! I've been up thinking of concepts and beating myself up all day. I've been stiff and monotone and it's irritating me. I needed this. 🙌🏾❤️
This is really helpful not just for new content creators, but for as a helpful reminder for those of us who have gotten into a groove yet veered off track from what goes in to making the best quality material we can produce. I know I need to learn exactly how to use my camera. I know I need to dedicate time to learning and studying several of the elements that you mentioned.
I love your pep talk. I was like you, I could never speak in front of my class in school, I would pretend to be sick and stay home or say my speech was not done. Even today, I don't like speaking to a crowd but if it's about my birds, I probably could do it. In my first videos of me in front of the camera I look like a robot, lol. I am getting more comfortable but I have to learn how to use my camera. Thank you for your videos 🥰
I don't talk alot too in my videos. But I put my recorded songs from a singing app so it is still my voice that they can hear. It is working for me not to speak with my audience and just put background music instead. Do what is comfortable for you to share. No pressure or don't need to always do what everybody does. 😍♥️
My favorite piece of advice from this entire talk was to keep going to meet that standard. Gold! I’m always hard on myself for this very reason and needed to hear that.
Nice Video!!! Its does make a small TH-camr like me think. But in a good way. Its so easy to feel pressured to keep up with the bigger channels and lose focus on what really matters.
Absolutely, I tell myself I'm in no rush to build my subscriber count. But it's hard not to when every time you are logged into TH-cam you are slammed with it.
I always find it strange when you're call things you say "harsh" or "blunt" maybe because I get called blunt too so it doesn't really register to me. It's gotten me in trouble with friends before.
It’s a safe bet to say that your words are “harsh” or “blunt” or “stepping on toes” if they’re truthful. Even if they don’t seem harsh, blunt, or harmful to toes. If it’s truth, it’s harsh, blunt, and painful to have your feet around.
I am SO monotone... I keep trying. Too many other skills to develop to count :) Saw Anson Dorrance speak today and thought about your coaching analogy. I’m going to pull some of that info together into a video one day. Really great stuff for my niche too. Need to re-read his book...
I need to work on editing and gaining a better understanding of programs and settings for things like sounds and cameras absolutely. But I think your biggest challenge is my own. A fear of speaking publicly because of fear of judgement and ridicule and feeling like a failure. I related to that very deeply. It's why I never started a youtube channel like I hoped to back in 2011 and now it's been 8 years...I think sometimes just starting is the hardest part. Once you do that, if you are willing to work hard, listen to criticism and advice, and allow yourself to learn and grow you can figure it all out. That's what I feel about it. I'm also impulsive and find being consistent hard too. It depends on the subject, but I find throwing myself to the sharks known as the internet is terrifying. Anyways, this is just me rambling now. Love your channel, I have watched a few videos now and subbed. I hope to learn a lot from you and I hope to get to put it to practical use.
Watching this 23 minute video from Roberto feels more like 5 minutes gone by. So much info packed in that just flows. Have been watching you for years now. Your videos are just as relevant for me today as they were when I first started out. Always good tips that can help any size channel, big or small. 🙏
I don't think there is really one skill I need to improve. I have a ton of work to do if I want any sort of viewership. I think I need to improve on everything. I just want to reach my goal of 40 videos in 2019. I usually give up on anything difficult in my life so reaching that goal would mean a lot to me.
I believe it’s a mix of both beliefs. When starting out, getting in the reps of making stuff over and over again is very important (not all that stuff even needs to be shared or uploaded). At a certain point though, quality does need to come before quantity. “Quality” can also refer to purpose, voice, value proposition, and a lot of other things that go beyond production value.
What new people who want to do TH-cam don't realize that making content is not an easy road and its very open wide range. I started as video game TH-camr for fun years ago. Then later on I took it little seriously up to now because I want to make content that are happy for me. We think numbers so much these days that we forgot about what it's like being a content creator. When I make videos now, I make them for my happiness and improve. One comment on my video makes me feel happy because I did make something impact on my video. Each video we make is a practice to be better until we refine ourselves.
I just need more the the "do". The actual executing and packaging of the content I want to put out. I'm already documenting/filming what I do by default of my work. I just need to actually execute the final packaging/editing/uploading.
Analytics and learning the platform. For my podcast Im still getting used to just going out in public, finding people, interviewing, editing and more. I simply dont feel like adding more to that right now. Maybe at about episode 20 Ill tackle that. I just dont care too much about being "popular" I love the encounters i have with the people I meet and love sharing them with just the 50+ followers I have. But yes I am lazy as far as learning the platform goes. My growth is stale and all my listens I get is only from the people who I met in person who organically followed me. But in due time. Thanks Roberto
This is the most raw video i've seen on youtube about channel growth and the stuff that goes on behind the scenes such as the business aspect which I always disregard. I love these rant videos you do, they are absolutely amazing!!!!
I get a dislike on my videos as soon as I upload, I know it's my hater and would like to know who it is. I do get others but I am used to it now but that one dislike that appears after a few seconds of my video being uploaded is annoying and obviously they did not watch the video, lol. You will get used to it, look at the thumbs up and try to avoid the thumbs down. Have a nice night.
@@Loveofpets yes. It is so awful that after editing 2-4 hours for that 10 minute video, within a few minutes of uploading there's already a dislike. I took a week off because of it. And would now post daily uploads for the whole month. I love watching my own videos and seeing those dislikes is the last thing I want. Thank you for sharing your experience too and would definitely learn how to ignore it and always see the positive side. 💓
You really gave me something to think about around the job. Ultimately I’d like to own my business which was one of the reasons I liked YT. But you’re right it’s too much pressure because there’s so much you can’t control.
Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you're going to live your life. Are you agree with this sir ? I learn it fom you and thank you for the tips and stay safe aa always i was inspired to create more content in order i will be better.❤
I love when you said ‘work with what you have’ 👍 totally agree. I use my phone to film and iMovie on my phone to edit. I use the free apps for making my thumbnails. Some people who know me keep on telling me to invest in a camera and a MacBook. I’ve set some goals, I’ll buy one item when I pass 1000 subs. The next one when I get to 5000 and so on 😊 it’s a hard road but I’ll get there 👍
Great advise. Just keep creating content and learning with each video created. It grows skulls and content, over time I’m sure it will continue to grow!
I truly believe in the reps! About 700 videos ago, I was horrible. Now, I’m better while being far from perfect. As a writer, I believe the same thing - write more books. If you want to get better, you gotta produce more content. Then publish it. Loved this video. The people who tune out on this message, just aren’t ready to hear it. I appreciate this video. Thanks 👏
Passion- All the way Skill level- mediocre, but improving Trending/popular- No. Working to try and get to that stuff Ahhh my mind is at war with itself. I am determined to do this but I am weak. I'm looking for a helping hand like you but that's not how it works and I'm learning that the hard way. I will make it, i will not fail, I just have to do it!
Nice advice, Roberto. I agree with you when it comes to expectations: it's best to have patience and know what you want, and not go for the fad thing if it's not gonna bring you any sense of satisfaction.
In our dress rehearsal, we probably won't have an audience. And since it is a dress rehearsal, external judgement may not matter as much, because we are still figuring out what we are doing

Coming to your channel because YOU are the one person and channel I turn too when I need the truth, advice, and encouragement!! Thank you Roberto!!!
Bruh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It cant get more real then what is said within this video!!!! Keep it up.
Love your bluntness! No BS, just what we need!
Yes, I'd like a free software video for TH-camr's. Great video, awesome advice.
2nd this!
I'll give this a 3rd this.
This needed to be said! So true!
Quality comes more in the message of the content right now, than in being filmed in 4k. :)
Wow! You are so on point about how us NewTubers really need to practice our craft. I appreciate the "Rant". Thanks for being honest with us on creating content! By the way, I would have never known that once upon a time you hated public speaking. You are AWESOME at it now!
your lighting looks better than last year.
I keep improving
@@RobertoBlake You do
Thanks Roberto. Your videos are amazing.
Another great video. You don't even know it but you've helped my channel Soooo much. Thanks Roberto!!
RicksterGhost
He helped me too!
That's the reason we all watch him, right? :)
Thank you for this video ,enjoying all the content
As a smaller creator I woke up to this and needed it, thank you so much for the push brother!
Raising your skill level and setting yourself apart from the 99% is always the game...
Quality advice here that is helping me now as I revamp how I approach my content strategy going forward. You nailed it on the head with overproduced content we have far too much of that going on especially in the tech space that I'm in.
BWOne its the thing too many people are insecure about.
@@RobertoBlake yeah I've had to learn this and let those insecurities go. It's opened up my mind to more creative and assessment.
I got a sony camera but still learning how to use it.. This TH-cam stuff take working on it constantly to improve
Absolutely. There is beauty and vulnerability in the imperfection. It connects in a gorgeous way and to be honest it sets you apart because most are concerned with quality and yes, still put out something that's valuable to someone else, but dont overthink.
Coach Roberto to the rescue!!
I've just started my TH-cam channel two months ago, just with my phone. I don't know anything but I am learning a lot from you. Thanks
All along from Kenya
Roberto u are seriously one of my hero’s u keep it so
Real
Hello Roberto, thank you for sharing your insight and advice. It is always appreciated. Have a great day Roberto.
Thank you so much for this! I've been up thinking of concepts and beating myself up all day. I've been stiff and monotone and it's irritating me. I needed this. 🙌🏾❤️
Skill I need, to get over the negative demons that whisper in my ear that I shouldn’t do YT because of not finding an audience. You are awesome RB!
Thank you so much Roberto! I’m in a similar situation now. You have no idea much this video means to me. Your content is amazing.
Thanks for the advice 🙏 I’m somewhat new been youtube for a year now
I loved this video! I definitely need to work on lighting. I never seem to get it right 😅
Nice Video!!!
So true!!!
well said ...thank you for telling your experienced
Wow my take away is that one must not compare one's self with our favourite content creators
Yes, and the only way to really get to understand your craft is to do it, over and over and over again. Grind!
@@GroundbreakGames great insights
This is a really thoughtful video, great of you to do this 👍 thank you, much appreciated x
Very good points. Great vid, as always!
Thanks Roberto. I LOVE your channel. I have 2000 subs and have been on TH-cam for 9 months and really appreciate your advice x
Narc Free Formula that’s actually pretty significant growth. Hope this was helpful!
If it’s truth, it’s harsh, blunt, and painful to have your feet around.
ps sorry for such a harsh comment :P
Thanks for the great advice Roberto!
I am SO monotone... I keep trying. Too many other skills to develop to count :)
Saw Anson Dorrance speak today and thought about your coaching analogy. I’m going to pull some of that info together into a video one day. Really great stuff for my niche too. Need to re-read his book...
Gene Hobbs I love this comment 👊🏻😊
Ian Corzine it’s your world! I’m just livin in it :) Thanks man!
I think what I need to work on is putting myself in the mind frame of talking to a person, not to a camera, or recording app.
I appreciate the honesty. I find making videos that I enjoy watching helps as it motivates me more to make videos.
Freakin’ preach ROBERTO!
More videos like this man! Appreciate the honesty, definitely an eye-opener
Awesome video Roberto. your videos help.
Watching this 23 minute video from Roberto feels more like 5 minutes gone by. So much info packed in that just flows.
Have been watching you for years now. Your videos are just as relevant for me today as they were when I first started out. Always good tips that can help any size channel, big or small. 🙏
LOL! To the Thumbnail, but today's e'mail was on queue. Thank you, Roberto!🍎💛🍎💛🍎
Thanks Roberto. Finally, terrific advice I have not heard of before. Thank you for being an original on this topic!
Sarah Le I felt these are the things nobody talks about. So I felt I wanted to.
I don't think there is really one skill I need to improve. I have a ton of work to do if I want any sort of viewership. I think I need to improve on everything. I just want to reach my goal of 40 videos in 2019. I usually give up on anything difficult in my life so reaching that goal would mean a lot to me.
Of spirit and time You can do it!
You can do it 😊
I believe it’s a mix of both beliefs. When starting out, getting in the reps of making stuff over and over again is very important (not all that stuff even needs to be shared or uploaded).
At a certain point though, quality does need to come before quantity. “Quality” can also refer to purpose, voice, value proposition, and a lot of other things that go beyond production value.
Preach brother! 👏🏻👏🏻
Great editing app : PowerDirector app. It's free and helpful!
Thanks!
Faye Raps Yup thank you 😊
This is the most raw video i've seen on youtube about channel growth and the stuff that goes on behind the scenes such as the business aspect which I always disregard. I love these rant videos you do, they are absolutely amazing!!!!
Yah I hate being judge too. Dislikes on every TH-cam video is still affecting me. I would do better videos to avoid that or just ignore the hate. 🙏♥️😇
Create lot of contents so that you can improve your quality. Don't fall for quality over quantity.
In other words “fail faster”
Excellent. It's only one word, but carries a weight when offered sincerely. Thank you Roberto.
Cat Milton appreciate it! Sorry for the late reply!!!
Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you're going to live your life. Are you agree with this sir ? I learn it fom you and thank you for the tips and stay safe aa always i was inspired to create more content in order i will be better.❤
Thanks for the advice Roberto. This is a tough pill to swallow, but it was much needed!
The next one when I get to 5000 and so on 😊 it’s a hard road but I’ll get there 👍
My son keeps telling me to get a MacBooks because he says the editing is simple and easy.
Great advise. Just keep creating content and learning with each video created. It grows skulls and content, over time I’m sure it will continue to grow!
Final Web Design being consistent and working at just improving matters
Pretty useful video. Do you have any resources towards learning how to be honest with myself?
I truly believe in the reps! About 700 videos ago, I was horrible. Now, I’m better while being far from perfect.
As a writer, I believe the same thing - write more books. If you want to get better, you gotta produce more content. Then publish it.
Loved this video. The people who tune out on this message, just aren’t ready to hear it. I appreciate this video. Thanks 👏
Passion- All the way
Skill level- mediocre, but improving
Trending/popular- No. Working to try and get to that stuff
Ahhh my mind is at war with itself.
Yes. Taking a break can also help with being patient. Also don't compare the channel with a successful channel.
@@FayeRapsYupITSME Yeah, comparing really doesn't help. ):
I completely agree with this video.
In our dress rehearsal, we probably won't have an audience. And since it is a dress rehearsal, external judgement may not matter as much, because we are still figuring out what we are doing
