    Conan said in a Lecture in Cambridge that this was the strangest performance ever on his show. He said the audience was very polite, but was clearly just waiting for the band. He called them "At The Drive-Thru."

    I love how Cedric realized he skipped a line in the first verse, so he dialed up the effects pedal to 11 and hoped the audience wouldn’t notice him repeating it.

    • @anthonynoble6442

      isoleamebuthappysoul Do you think he looks like he's having a blast? He seems like he's cringing in all the post RoC release TV appearances they did. I just watched the (absolutely appaling) version of this they (I say they but was really just Cedric and Omar. You can't fault the rest of them) did for Jools Holland and I thought to myself that if I had been Jim Ward in that situation I would have hidden behind the backline so no one could see me. It's a shame that Cedric and Omar clearly didn't want to be in this band at this point and as a result behaved like this when it was the only real snapshot that a lot of people we're going to get of this truly magnificent band. They did themselves a grave disservice in my opinon. They toiled away unknown for too long for this to be the account of themselves they portrayed when they were started to get people's interest.

      Ps: early Fugazi shows were just as insane!!

    • @ckennedy0323
      @ckennedy0323 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +anthony noble Early AtDi revolved around this spirit. Every show that you can find of them was in some varying degree similar to this. I think in an early interview they discuss how their music should move through their body. I know in the Rolling Stone's interview, Jim actually talks about how the band is meant to sound chaotic and dissonant. He even broke his own head stock on the bassist's back going all out like Cedric and Omar. Jim wanted and loved this band as did all of them.
      They were meant to be like this. They were a band to get their stories, their lives, their emotions out. I don't think they ever strived to be anything more then that considering the result of TMV and Sparta. This was the angsty embodiment of what they felt. Musicianship was put aside for a more ethereal and emotional cause.

    • @michaelgraham9774
      @michaelgraham9774 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      I kinda blame it on the garage rock revival that happened around the same time. A lot of journalists started hyping up bands that sounded like they were just trying to copy the 70s rock style. Even though some great bands came out of that trend, the post hardcore scene should've picked up more mainstream traction.

      It become the rock of the future, but like until 2006. Then emo happened, indie become a little forgotten, then reggaeton and house, EDM pop electronic music happened.. some good bands pop up, went away quick. Rock become underground. Nowadays, Rock is popular; is mostly underground, good bands. What is popular with new generations is psychodelic, bedroom pop, indie surf stoner kind of stuff, and most recently Post Punk.

      @@michaelgraham9774 I think both scenes were great and showed great power and energy in their music. bands like the hives,vines,comets on fire,drunk horse,gorilla etc.. were all very good bands. I think it started to get watered down by 2011 and then in 2014 obscure 70s and stoner rock became kind of a hot thing again, at least in my area it was at the time and now it seems like that scene is just doing too much of the same thing over and over and it gets boring, but their is some good talent out there in the obscure side of things. bands like violent soho, fontaines D.C. , pinko and bummer. who do things in the classic way of bands like shellac, drive like jehu, sonic youth etc.. I love both post punk, hardcore, emo, alternative etc.. but at the end of the day isn't it all just rock n roll? I stoped restricting myself from listening to just one sub genre, only one I don't touch is that god awful top charting crap we have now or have had for a while now, I listen to everything from at the drive in, mudhoney, pearl jam, deftones, faith no more, mars volta, icarus line, toadies,incubus, janes addiction, fugazi, brainiac etc... and it's all good fucking music. fuck category, listen to whatever you want.

    If you guys dig this, look up the version they did of this song on "Later with Jools Holland" look for the one with the long duration because it shows something really funny.
    Imagine this: ATDI started this song when Omar broke a string, so he's handed his back up (both black Squier Super sonic models), it takes him a while to plug his guitar back in, so it's feedbacking an screeching during the second verse. Cedric meanwhile has gotten hold of a random chair, uses it to climb a PA tower and leaps off. Omar's guitar has ended up god knows where and he got a tambourine in his hand and the song ends in shambles and the audience going wild.
    ...then the camera turns to the artist who was next on the bill, it's none other than Robbie Williams, who is looking with a "deer-in-the-headlights" look going 'HOW THE FUCK AM i GONNA TO FOLLOW THAT?"

      to be fair he is not hurting anyone but himself potentially, unlike in moshing

    Ill never understand people praising the messiness of the original punk vands of the 70s and even the 80s but then shitting over this? Its the exact same thing in terms of energy and the chaos only difference is these guys can actually play really well they just choose to play sloppier for a better physical performance

      NOVA According to the singer, Letterman came up to them and said "don't quit your dayjobs" after they played. It's not in the video though.

    Conan hated having anything remotely close to this genre of music on his show. Just watch his body language and his verbal delivery that sounds like he's giving an eulogy.

    • @sharpvonl201
      @sharpvonl201 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      its not the genre, its because of how they they threw shit around. although it looks cool, any owner of a venue hates getting things thrown around and they just looked up themselves bailing right after the song. Conans a cool guy

      Conan had some pretty "out there" bands on his show. I'm sure it doesnt really have to do with the genre.
