    UPDATE: The original Agilent display uses a SSD1303 driver IC.
    The replacements are SSD1305 or SSD1309 and will mirror the display.
    So, either I find an SSD1303 OLED (long obsolete), or make an adaptor Pcb.

      I would just stick with the working replacement display board and declare victory..

      You could always build a little board to strap on the front of the meter. Put a camera on it, then flip the image in an FPGA and add a new display in front of that. Job done.

      @@sdgelectronics Great idea! and I'll strap the 6v battery from your moped on the back to power it all.

      Could it flipped over some how by extending and twisting the flat flex? So the mirror image is mirrored back the correct way.

    Interesting repair - have also seen EEVBlog's similar repair too. Years ago there were some very nice mp3 players made by Creative Zen and they used OLED colour screens, and after a few years the screens faded and became invisible. I still have a couple of them.

    I was just fixing my Samsung S8+ OLED and there was a TFT version of the display, ie, it looks like OLED isn't a great idea for longevity. I had to get a 2nd hand orig OLED with spots, just to get close to the price of an already working 2nd hand phone - ouch -.

    I don't know how many years old these U1253B's are by now but there must a manufacturing defect that causes these screens to die so quickly.
    My phone is a 12 year old Motorola XT910. It uses a super AMOLED display and still works perfectly. No dead pixels or brightness fading. I have the brightness turned down to increase battery live and reduce eye strain. I wonder if the OLED screens in these multimeters are being over driven. LEDs don't like being over driven. I wonder if there is a way to under run them by changing a resistor or adding a diode in series with the supply voltage?

    @capriracer351 ปีที่แล้ว

    I purchased one of these and replaced the OLED with what appears to be the same kit that you purchased. The display works very well now, BUT the input attenuator for the voltage ranges is not correct. The maximum voltage you can apply is about 1 volt in all ranges. Except for the millivolt function, which works correctly. Spent some time trying to troubleshoot the problem last summer, need to get back on it when I have time. Would have been nice to have a schematic available, but that does not appear to be available to the general public.

      That's an odd fault, hope you get it fixed.

      There shouldn't be any interference with the functionality of the multimeter. Data is received but nothing is transmitted back. In a sense the meter is only impacted by the load being present. I've had issues with the firmware on the meters. Back when mine was new it would glitch up and require a hard reset by removing the batteries, turning the dial on and off, and then putting the batteries back in. You can try that and see if it helps.

  • @simontay4851
    @simontay4851 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why use an OLED screen for a multimeter anyway. What advantage(s) is/are there over a LCD with a backlight. It's just displaying digits after all, not graphics. These multimeters have a _very_ fast update rate. Was an OLED screen needed for that or could an LCD have been used. Apart from that, i don't see any advantage. Seems to be just a gimmic.

    Sadly I have one of these. I don't use it very much because every time I reach for it the battery is invariably flat so I have to go through a charge cycle before use. That must be the reason my screen hasn't died yet. I bought mine because it has a very nice display which turns out to be its Achilles heel. I guess as the saying goes beauty is only skin deep,

    hi. I got the Agilent U1273AX, got a really deal on it from the distributor in my country some years ago. Less then a third of current retail price. Thought, hey, its expensive, but I'll have a MM that will last me for years. Little did I know.
    Hadnt used it for a coupel of months, pulled it for something I needed to measure away from my home lab, and the bloody screen had died. Really annoying as it is in mint condition and barely used. I know the screen that is used in the one you repaired is the same as mine, so I would really appreciate if you could provide a link? found a few on eBay, but honestly, gotten burned so many times on eBay that I really dont want to use ebay unless I have too.
    So if I can get it repaired, I'll sell it, cant an expensive MM with dying OLED displays needing to be changed every couple of years. And also I asked the distributor is Agilent woudl be able to sell me a new screen. Agilent wouldn't sell me one, but offered me to repair it for 500 euro's lol.
