The carbide lamp - structure, function, products

Fire becomes out of stone and water!
What sounds incredible is quite normal in the carbide lamp (= acetylene lamp, mine lamp, carbide lamp). It is filled with calcium carbide (= calcium acetylide) and water. Through a small opening, which is closed with a pin, water can be directed onto the calcium salt and the reaction can be started.
Since the reaction cannot be seen in the carbide lamp, the model experiment is shown after the ignition of the carbide lamp. The close-up in slow motion clearly shows the gas development when the carbide meets water.
The use of universal indicator solution with the residue also brings a clear color.
It's amazing how much chemistry people used to have to deal with every day.
Not that easy to use at all.
