  • Pathologists are in a continuous struggle to identify some of the bodies recovered from the ruins of the George collapsed building. Emergency crews are still busy on site trying to find at least 20 people who remain trapped after a five-storey building collapsed. The building caved in last week Monday with 81 people working on site. 61 people have been freed from the rubble, with 32 confirmed fatalities. Frustration is growing among the families who are still looking for answers. The South African Local Government Association will be visiting the site later today. Sipha Kema has more.

May God intervene. This is a disaster beyond our comprehension.
The world needs to know what caused the collapse of the building.

Perhaps a irrelevant question... wouldn't cell phones on the deceased assist in identifying victims? Even if the phones are damaged surely the simcards will still be intact? It is very unusual for anyone not to have a cellphone

I think those owners & developers have obviously long since left South Africa

The problem with these owners and developers left the country at a high speed and if they did not fled yet, they definitely took tons of invisible juice.
We will never see nor hear them again

Builders are employers not developers??? building inspectors are to blame

Building Inspectors are not there to supervise the quality performance of the main and secondary contractors on behalf of the client. There should be a competent Clerk of the works resident on site acting as the eyes and ears for the architect who is employed (or should be) by the client. That is the way in which it has worked for over a hundred years. If the architect is employed only to do drawings and have a building warrant issued and then he is removed to save costs by instruction of the client, then that is when you realise that the lunatics have now taken over the asylum and are employing non documented workers with little skills and no independent supervision then you are now at the gates of hell itself.

All victims or their families have to get insurance from the owner

No one seem to care about fellow African brothers and sisters who are vulnerable due to bureaucracy. I tried several times to register my employees who are South Africans with DOL but Null and Void

Now is a perfect time to investigate building regulations for all the buildings that mashroomed in this town over the last 10 to 20 yeaes ,, in order to confirm the safety of the citizens . ..imagine we shop around in the mall and kaboom it implodes ....just an example . ...this accident in Victoria street is enough proof of what could happen....and also investigate from labor petspective the employment of migrants instread of towns folk ....and migrant wages and make sure its not cheap labor . ...we are all God's children and deserve only the best ,, our country signed Gesara and protocol should be observed in terms of Gesara .....follow me if u dont know whats coming...(* sorry sabc im not promoting im just astounded....most people dont know we are and have been in a war since forever and that the entire world is under Martial law , hence i said ,, why not call in the Military specialists
