The Rufous-collared Sparrow is a passerine bird in the Passerellidae family. It is one of the most known and esteemed birds in Brazil. Its name comes from the Tupi and derives from its call. This bird and the sparrow are two common species in urban areas and many people confuse them despite having easily perceived differences. Among the well-known popular names, the following stand out: salta-Caminho (Pernambuco and interior of Paraíba), titiquinha and ticão, gitica, mariquita-tio-unio (São Paulo), tiquinho (Paraná), catete, cata-pilão, jesus- meu-deus (Bahia), chuvinha (Sul do Piauí), toinho (Paraíba - region of the Western Seridó) and piqui-meu-deus (south of Ceará), and also tico-tico-jesus-meu-deus.
