    {Spoiler Alert}
    I don't agree with your "there is evidence that they truly do find each other as best friends". I think the movie was portrayed in a way that makes it impossible to see the outcome of their relationship. That's the beauty and saddest part of the film. It's about something beautiful, that could even start to evolve into something more between the two of them (or maybe not, they were still discovering each other and their own feelings), but that was abruptly broken by the consequence of the pressure and prejudice institutionalized in our society.
    I particularly believe based on how Leo behaved, that he was completely in love with Remi ( the scene where Leo was mesmerized by Remi's beauty while he was playing music in his room and later the one scene in the concert where he almost cried out of joy, shows that very well). But he never realized his feelings due to how close they were always been. After he got introduced to peer pressure and society perceptions and stereotypes, he started to realize it and be more self-aware of the feelings he was having and the social consequences of those same feelings. He was terrified and in a response, he pushed Remi away and started to be more compliant with society's standards of what a boy of his age should do or be.
    I also do believe he would eventually realize his mistakes and would try to fix things up. However, unfortunately, time, sometimes, is a luxury we don't get the chance to have...
    A note, I also don't blame everything on the peer pressure and Leo's actions. It was clear that Remi was a boy who really struggled to express himself, and had an unhealthy habit to shut everything inside. So his mental health was in a very delicated state even before everything happened. His mom has always noticed that (You can see how she was already concerned about him closing the bathroom door). Unfortunately, she and his father failed to intervene sooner, probably waiting for him to feel comfortable enough to talk about his own feelings. Something that would never had happen without help, since he struggled so much to express himself. So in other words, his death was a sequence of events over a long period of time in conjunction with his already fragile mental state and the lack of emotional competencies to deal with it all. Sadly, it happens a lot...

      this is a beautiful take on the film and the closest to the intent of the film in my opinion.

      Great breakdown. Couldn't agree more. Nobody can say they weren't gay and nobody can say they were. Their relationship was beautiful regardless.

      Wow, I think you summed it up perfectly and I have yet to see the film. Other than interviews and trailers. I cannot wait to actually see it.

      I see this relationship a bit differently. I just finished the movie and my interpretation is that it is not clear or obvious that Leo is "in love" with Remi in a romantic sense. Leo is the more outgoing of the two boys and seems to have no problem doing his own thing. Remi is more introverted and insecure. Leo quickly distances himself from Remi when he's questioned about their relationship by those girls, while Remi looks on, stunned silent and dejected. It is Remi, who has a bad reaction to their changing relationship. As cruel and as thoughtless as Leo is to Remi, instead of giving Leo space, he reacts emotionally and lashes out. I say all of this to say that I think it's Remi who has romantic feelings towards Leo and is in love with him. I think that Leo loves Remi, but as a best friend or a brother.
      The movie is so beautifully made that their sexuality doesn't really matter. But that was my interpretation of their relationship.

    Watched this movie yesterday and was blown away. It's so, so, so well acted, and like you said the interactions and relationships felt so real.
    I cried multiple times. Such a beautiful and painful movie.

    I watched this last night, and was blown away. Took me back to my childhood with a close friend and how we pulled apart from each other during our middle school years.

    Little 'correction', it is not a French movie, it's Belgian, the director is Flemish (Dutch speaking part of Belgium).
    Thanks for the review, from behalf of the rest of Belgium. 😉

    I liked it a lot, but it was definitely sad. The performances were great, especially between the two younger actors. I hope they got free therapy sessions and receive a couple of acting awards.

    Overall it's a Belguim film. It's a coproduces Belguim Dutch and French film. The scenes in the flowerfields are filmed in the Netherlands near where I live. I absolutely loved this film and was totally heartbroken after seeying it. 10/10 for me as well. I agree with you on everything, that scène with his brother, wow, soooo natural so real. If this film doesn't win best foreign language film at the Golden Globes the Baftas and the Oscars, I'll never take those institutions serious again. It's the best film I've seen in years imho. And I'm not biased because some scene's were filmed near where I live😉

      I'm not anywhere near where you are in the world, and I absolutely agree! This film needs to win EVERYTHING! 🏆

    • @showmoke
      @showmoke ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I wanted it to win as well, but I had my doubts as it was up against mammoth films like 'All Quiet on the Western Front' which of course won the Oscar. Any other year and it certainly would have won the Oscar I'm sure.

    Spot on! I watched the scene of him at the end of that bus field trip with such awe. The acting is so so subtle, but his expressions are absolutely amazing and believable. I re-watched that scene alone multiple times. Great tension throughout. I'd also mention the sound quality was also superb. Capturing every breath, crinkle of a pillow, etc. Def one of the best films of the year.

    Your reviews are always sensitive, thoughtful, exploratory, about the stories and the moviemakers, including of course the actors. Your reach to understand people is what stands out for me in your reviews. You're a careful reviewer, but over and above that you're a humanist. (Please don't get mad at me for being a word cop (English major). There's no such word as "irregardless". Are you mad at me? I hope not.) You're wonderful. I'm so pleased that I subscribe. I look forward to your reviews, regardless of which movie you're reviewing. :
