    I remember watching the trailer and thinking this was a huge Oscar contender when a lot of people for some reason didn't think so. I mean, if you watch the trailer it seemed like it was an easy contender: amazing cinematography, writing, performances... I'm really glad it ended up exceeding my expectations.

    I looove the McDonagh brothers, the Irish version of the Coen brothers, masters of dark comedy. Interesting that this uses the two leads of In Bruges and the same setting as Calvary which his brother John Michael directed, which also had Brendan Gleason in the starring role. John Michael also just had a film come out called The Forgiven with Ray Fiennes, which was an amazing watch.

    In a film full of good performances Barry Keoghan's was easily the best. His accent, his facial expressions and his mannerisms gave you the impression that he had fully inhabited the character he played. I challenge you to watch the scene with Kerry Condon where he suffers rejection and not be impressed. People who aren't Irish might not appreciate just how good his accent was either.

    Good review although you missed that this is clearly an allegory for the Irish Civil War of 1922-3 which pitted neighbor against neighbor. The war got started over seemingly inconsequential reasons then spun out of control until vengeance became became an end in itself. The war was referenced several times in the movie, especially in the final scene when on the beach when Padraig says, "some things there's no moving on from, and I think that's a good thing." On the hillside Mrs. McCormick sits on the hillside amid the ashes of Colm's house as Padraig and Colm depart in either direction with the banshee between them, foreboding more death and destruction. The story of Ireland.
    By the way, Inisherin in the Irish tongue is a combination is Inish and Erin meaning the Island of Ireland. This was the story of Ireland in allegorical form.

    Barry Keoghan was my favourite performance, hands down. I thought the gimmick between the two main characters was funnier in "In Bruges". Generally I thought the comedy was not strong enough to lift the bleakness and to make the movie satisfying. Some of Gleeson's character's peculiar choices didn't make the character interesting to me, it just made him more unrelatable.

    • @jamesdan6895
      @jamesdan6895 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hard disagree. In Bruges and Three Billboards are great imo because they're so dark and unbalanced. The way they're written are very in line with McDonagh's plays, funny, dark, sad, touching, very bipolar, but in a good way. Seven Psychopaths feels like it could be on a double bill with the Hangover. Crass and flashy, without much substance.

    • @cinemacola6398
      @cinemacola6398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jamesdan6895 Hard disagree back. Three billboards tries a little too hard to be grounded in reality and there's a ton of plot holes in it. How she was able to get away with burning down the police station with a Molotov cocktail and yet no one seems to find her culpable? How Dixon literally almost killed a guy, punched a girl and he walks away with just losing his job? How she literally drills a hole on the dentist and is let go without any repercussions? I will agree In burges is up there, but not on the level of psychopaths.
      Psychopaths has everything you mentioned lol. It has heart in the priest story about revenge turning into a story about peace with the monk burning himself in Saigon. Dark and sad from the subject matter in Christopher Walkens story about his daughter getting killed. It's funny, well written and full of witty snappy dialogue. It is his best movie. Hands down.

      @@gallowglass2630 I believe a lot of the symbolism relates to the civil war.. Also the humour is so very, very Irish and therefore VERY relatable to us. They've done a great thing by making it so understood and (mostly) liked by the world. The guys kept saying "town" too.. I believe its set on an island, therefore trapped together. It was filmed on Inis Mor (the largest of the Aran Islands and Achill) the island itself plays a character i think.

    I wonder why you didn't mention Colin Farrell's and Brendan Gleeson's dazzling performances in IN BRUGES as at least one of their best performances. I guess you need to see that masterpiece at least once again.
    I don't know why, and excuse me if I'm wrong, but I somehow guess that you two probably haven't watched that gorgeous film yet, or you don't take it seriously as much as me and many others. In Bruges is a beautiful, thought-provoking, and masterfully executed masterpiece with a brilliant screenplay, three powerhouse performances from Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes, and a wonderful score by Carter Burwell. I strongly believe that McDonagh was worthy of winning the Oscar for original screenplay that year (he lost to Dustin Lance Black for Milk) and Colin Farrell could at least be nominated for it for the first time. McDonagh was once again worthy of that prize for Three Billboards, but lost to Jordan Peele for Get Out.
    I can't wait to see The Banshees of Inisherin. I guess I'll love it as much as I love In Bruges and Three Billboards. I hope the Academy voters do justice to Martin McDonagh and Colin Farrell... may they get what they really deserve! Amen!
    By the way, I'm working on the translation of two books from English to Persian, a book on [the sense of] "justice" in McDonagh's plays and films, and the other one is called: Terrence Malick: Filmmaker and Philosopher by Robert Sinnerbrink. Malick, McDonagh, PTA, Iñárritu and Coen Brothers are my most favorite filmmakers working today.
    I have a lot of love and admiration for both of you. Your perspectives are genuine, and you both own some authentic approaches towards cinema. Your vast knowledge and profound understanding of films always amazes me. You both are more intelligent than most film critics I know all over the world. Keep up the magnificent work.
    Cheers, and All the Best! (from Iran, in a rainy morning of another day of the crucial days in the newest season of people's protests and rage against the tyranny of the government).
    I hope you forgive my talkativeness and my not-so-good (perhaps annoying) English.

    I’m Irish and a big fan of both leads.
    I thought this movie was absolutely shite.
    It was the proverbial “much ado about nothing”.
    The acting was as you’d expect from the calibre of actors, so no fault there, but you’re watching them doing their craft in such an unbelievable premise.
    It’ll be hyped, it’ll get Oscar attention and people will enjoy sniffing their own farts as they tell you how funny and moving it was….and then no one will mention this movie again.
    I didn’t enjoy 3 Billboards, 7 psychopaths, In Burgues, or the Guard and now there’s this latest offering….I clearly have no love for Martin McDonagh, and I’ll be steering well away of any of his future movies.
    (I’m not here to hate btw, I’m just being honest and very much against the flow of opinion)
